GTA: San Andreas was offered free on PC when Rockstar launched its new game launcher in September 2019—but that promotion was limited-time and should not be confused with the current availability of the game. Rockstar’s announcement applied to the classic PC version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and players who claimed it permanently added it to their Social Club/Rockstar library.
Rockstar’s current store listing instead promotes Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, a paid package containing San Andreas, Vice City, and GTA III. The Rockstar Games Launcher still supports the classic standalone San Andreas, but that does not mean the old free promotion is currently claimable.
Is GTA: San Andreas currently free on PC?
No—not as a generally available promotion through the Rockstar Games Launcher. Rockstar announced the free classic PC version on September 17, 2019, describing the offer as available “for a limited time.” The announcement said that claiming the game would permanently add it to the user’s Social Club library.

However, Rockstar’s current store does not list the classic game as a new free giveaway. Its active PC listing is Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, released on November 11, 2021, and currently shown as Buy Now — $59.99 for the Rockstar Games Launcher version.
#1 Best Overall
- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.
The Definitive Edition includes:
- Grand Theft Auto III
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
It is also a different product from the classic PC release that was offered in 2019. Rockstar’s supported-title list identifies both the standalone classic Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition as separate supported products.
What happens if you claimed the 2019 offer?
If you claimed the game while the promotion was active, it should remain attached to the Social Club/Rockstar account used at the time. You can install it through the Rockstar Games Launcher after signing in to that account.
- Download the launcher from Rockstar’s official page: socialclub.rockstargames.com/rockstar-games-launcher.
- Install and open the Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Sign in with the Rockstar account that claimed the game.
- Open your library and look for the classic Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas entry.
- Select the game and follow the launcher’s installation prompts.
There is no official command-line or console command for claiming or installing the game. Rockstar’s documented process uses the launcher’s graphical interface. If the title is not in the account’s library, installing the launcher again will not recreate the expired promotion.
Do not confuse the classic version with the Definitive Edition
The classic PC version and the Definitive Edition have different store entries, requirements, and product identities. The current Rockstar Store page is for the Definitive Edition, not the 2019 giveaway.
| Product | Status described by Rockstar | What it contains |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas | Classic standalone title supported by the Rockstar Games Launcher | San Andreas only |
| Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition | Current paid store product; listed at $59.99 | GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas |
Rockstar Support still has an article about problems claiming the “free offer” of San Andreas. That support page documents an error condition, but it should not be treated as confirmation that the original promotion remains active. Rockstar’s own announcement is explicit that the offer was limited-time, while the current store presents the Trilogy as a paid purchase.

What if the Store Menu is missing?
Rockstar’s support article refers to the relevant launcher navigation item as Store Menu. Some users may instead see the message “This feature is not currently available” and have no Store Menu.
Rockstar’s stated guidance for that condition points users to its Terms of Service. The article does not document a current sequence of buttons such as “Claim,” “Get,” or “Add to Library.” Therefore, guides promising a guaranteed claim button or a special command are not supported by Rockstar’s documented instructions.

Launcher and PC requirements
The Rockstar Games Launcher requires at least the following:
| Requirement | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Memory | 2 GB RAM |
| Graphics | DirectX 11-supported graphics card |
| Storage | 1 GB for the launcher, plus space for games |
| Connectivity | Internet access for sign-in or account creation and game activation |
These are launcher requirements, not necessarily the requirements for every game. The current Trilogy Definitive Edition listing requires considerably more hardware:

Grand Theft Auto returns with Tommy Vercetti’s tale of betrayal and revenge in a neon-soaked tropical town full of excess and brimming with possibilities.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption. Now, it's the early 90s. CJ’s got to go home - his mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart, and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.

The Definitive Edition also requires the Rockstar Games Launcher and a Rockstar Games Social Club login for installation, activation, and online play. Rockstar says that internet access is required for activation, online play, and periodic entitlement verification.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to verify the game files
If a legitimately owned installation fails to launch or appears damaged, Rockstar documents this verification path:
- Sign in to the Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Open Settings.
- Under My installed games on the left, select the affected game.
- On the right, find Verify game file integrity.
- Select Verify Integrity.
When the process finishes, a pop-up above the system tray says that the game has been verified and is ready to play. Verification checks an existing installation; it does not claim an expired free offer or convert the Definitive Edition into the classic release.
Connection troubleshooting
If the launcher cannot sign in, load the store, or verify ownership, check Rockstar’s service status before changing local settings. Rockstar lists a recommended download speed of 7.5 Mbps, a recommended upload speed of 1 Mbps, and a minimum upload speed of 0.5 Mbps.
For network configuration and firewall troubleshooting, Rockstar lists these UDP ports:

Bottom line: the free offer was real, but it was not permanent
GTA: San Andreas really was available free on PC through the newly launched Rockstar Games Launcher in 2019. Players who claimed it during the limited-time window kept it in their Rockstar library. The misleading part is presenting that old promotion as a current giveaway.
Today, check your Rockstar library if you may have claimed the classic version. If it is not there, the official Rockstar Store’s current San Andreas option is the $59.99 Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, not a free standalone download.
FAQ
Can I still claim the free classic GTA: San Andreas offer?
Rockstar announced the offer on September 17, 2019, and described it as limited-time. It should not be treated as a current claimable promotion. Only users who claimed it while the offer was active should retain it in their Rockstar library.

Was the free offer for GTA: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition?
No. The promotion applied to the classic PC version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The Definitive Edition is a separate product released on November 11, 2021, containing San Andreas, Vice City, and GTA III.
Why can’t I see the Store Menu in the Rockstar Games Launcher?
Rockstar documents a condition in which the launcher shows “This feature is not currently available” and the Store Menu is missing. Its support article points to the Terms of Service but does not provide a guaranteed claim-button sequence.
What are the minimum Rockstar Games Launcher requirements?
The launcher requires Windows 10 64-bit, 2 GB RAM, a DirectX 11-supported graphics card, 1 GB of launcher storage, and internet access for sign-in or account creation and activation.
How do I verify Rockstar game files?
Sign in to the launcher, open Settings, select the game under My installed games, and choose Verify Integrity under Verify game file integrity.
The Bottom Line
The headline is based on a genuine 2019 promotion, but it is outdated as a current deal. The classic PC version was free for a limited time and remains available only to accounts that claimed it. New buyers currently see the paid $59.99 Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition on Rockstar’s store.
