Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas does not provide a general menu for replaying story missions after you complete them. To play a completed mission again, load a save made before it or begin a new game. The Definitive Edition can let you retry from a checkpoint after failing certain missions, but checkpoint retry is not the same as post-completion replay.
Cheats are available during gameplay on supported platforms, yet they carry serious risks. Rockstar Games Customer Support warns that cheat keys can cause malfunctions or crashes and says not to save after activating them. Keep a clean, separate save before experimenting.
Can you replay completed missions in San Andreas?
In the original Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and the San Andreas – The Definitive Edition, there is no established general mission-select screen for choosing any previously completed story mission. Player-facing guidance for the PS5 Definitive Edition says a completed mission cannot be played again unless you load a save from before that mission or start a new game.

That answer should be read with an evidence qualification: Rockstar has published notes about retrying missions from checkpoints, but no current official page located for this subject sets out a universal completed-mission replay policy. In practical terms, treat a mission as one-time content unless you deliberately preserve an earlier save.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The reliable workaround: a pre-mission save
- Finish any preparation you want, then create a new manual save in a separate slot before starting the mission.
- Play the mission normally and keep your regular post-mission save in a different slot.
- When you want to revisit the mission, load the pre-mission slot.
- After replaying, return to your latest progress save if you want to continue the story.
Do not overwrite the pre-mission slot. Rotating several manual slots is safer than relying on one autosave, especially if you use cheats or encounter a corrupted file.
Retrying a failed mission versus replaying a completed one
These are separate game systems. A retry happens while a mission is still in an unsuccessful state; a replay means starting a mission again after the game has recorded it as completed.
| Situation | What happens | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Mission failure with a checkpoint | The game may offer a retry from the last checkpoint. | Remain in the failed-mission flow and choose the retry option. |
| Mission failure without a usable checkpoint | You may have to restart the mission from its beginning or reload a save. | The mission’s available retry behavior on your platform and edition. |
| Mission already completed | No general completed-mission selection menu is established. | A save made before the mission, or a new game. |
Rockstar’s Definitive Edition Title Update 1.02 notes, updated April 29, 2024, document a bug in which choosing retry from the last checkpoint in High Stakes, Low Rider restarted the game from the beginning. A separate 1.04 update result also refers to problems retrying missions from the last checkpoint, including being unable to retry High Stakes, Low Rider. These notes confirm checkpoint-retry behavior in at least some Definitive Edition situations; they do not prove that every mission has checkpoints or an identical retry flow.

Use a dedicated save slot
Save immediately before entering the mission marker, cutscene trigger, or other point of no return. Give yourself a simple system, such as one slot for current progress and two rotating backup slots. A pre-mission save is the only practical way to replay a completed mission without restarting the whole story.

Keep the backup untouched
Never use the preserved slot for free-roaming, cheat testing, or post-mission progress. If you want to experiment, save in a different slot first, then reload the clean slot when finished.
Loading the slot
- Open the game’s load menu from the pause or main menu.
- Select the manual save created before the mission.
- Confirm that the displayed location and progress are before the target mission.
- Play the mission again. Saving afterward will create progress from that earlier point, so load your newest progress slot when you are done experimenting.
Cheat safety: what Rockstar warns about
Rockstar Games Customer Support’s page titled Game Tips for GTA: San Andreas Special Ed, last updated May 2, 2024, gives an unusually strong warning: “Cheat keys are not officially supported by Take 2 Games. Using cheat keys can cause the game to malfunction or crash. Use at your own risk!” The same page states: “There is no safe cheat in San Andreas. Once activated, do not save the game. Doing so may corrupt the file and cause unrecoverable glitches and/or crashes.”
The page uses a “Special Ed” label and includes a final recovery instruction specific to the PlayStation 2 context. Do not assume that recovery procedure applies unchanged to the original PC release, modern consoles, Switch, or the Definitive Edition.
- Make a clean manual save before entering any code.
- Use a separate slot for cheat testing.
- Do not save while cheats are active.
- If the game behaves strangely, quit without saving and reload the clean slot.
- Keep cheats away from your only story-progress file.
How to enter cheats on PC and consoles
Rockstar says cheat codes can be entered during gameplay. The exact input is platform-specific, and a code that works in the original release may not work in the Definitive Edition.

PC
- Load into active gameplay and leave the game unpaused.
- Type the listed word or phrase on the keyboard exactly as shown by a current platform-specific guide.
- Watch for the success notification.
- If nothing happens, verify that you are not in a menu, that the game has focus, and that the code belongs to your edition.
PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch
- Enter the button sequence during active gameplay rather than in a pause or map screen.
- Use the sequence for the exact console family and edition.
- Some players use a connected keyboard or controller, but the sequence still must match the platform’s supported input.
- Confirm activation through the on-screen notification before continuing.
PC Gamer’s current guide separates PC text codes from console sequences and marks remaster compatibility for individual entries. It reports that most current codes work in the Definitive Edition, not that every original code does. Check the compatibility mark for each code before using it.
Common example codes
The following examples are from the current PC Gamer code table. They are illustrative, not a complete list, and the remaster compatibility marking should be checked for each platform before entry.
| PC code | Effect | Definitive Edition note |
|---|---|---|
HESOYAM |
Health, armor, and $250,000 | Marked compatible in the guide |
LXGIWYL |
Weapon set 1 | Marked compatible in the guide |
KJKSZPJ |
Weapon set 2 | Marked compatible in the guide |
WANRLTW |
Infinite ammunition | Marked compatible in the guide |
Console users should not type these PC strings unless their edition specifically supports keyboard entry for that code. Use the console sequence listed for your platform instead.

Cheats are best treated as temporary experimentation, not as a repair tool for a damaged save or a guaranteed way to bypass a difficult mission. PC Gamer warns that some cheats can soft-lock progress and that using cheats can prevent achievements from unlocking. Rockstar’s warning goes further by identifying possible malfunctions, crashes, file corruption, and unrecoverable glitches.

Safer testing routine
- Complete your normal objective and save cleanly.
- Create a second manual save for testing.
- Activate one cheat at a time and observe the result.
- Do not save the test state.
- Quit or reload the clean save before continuing your story.
Using several codes at once makes it harder to identify which effect caused a problem. If a mission trigger, character behavior, vehicle, or achievement stops working, reload the untouched save rather than trying to repair the cheated file.
Original San Andreas or Definitive Edition?
The Definitive Edition is part of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. Rockstar’s store lists San Andreas among the three included games, identifies Rockstar Games as publisher and Grove Street Games as adaptation developer, and shows a November 11, 2021 release date. PS5 is one of the selectable platforms on that store listing.
Edition and platform matter for both cheats and mission behavior. The original release may use different input instructions from the remaster, and compatibility is listed code by code. When asking for help, state all three details: original or Definitive Edition, PC or console, and the specific platform model.

Troubleshooting mission retry problems
The retry option is missing
Not every mission necessarily exposes a checkpoint retry. If the option does not appear, restart from the beginning if offered, or load your latest pre-mission or pre-failure save.

Retry sends you to the beginning
In the Definitive Edition, Rockstar documented a High Stakes, Low Rider bug in which last-checkpoint retry restarted the game from the beginning. Update the game through your platform’s normal update system, then retry. If the issue persists, load a manual save before the mission rather than repeatedly selecting the faulty checkpoint option.
The save now behaves unpredictably
If cheats were active when you saved, stop using that file. Reload the clean save created before cheat activation. Rockstar specifically warns that saving after a cheat can corrupt the file or produce unrecoverable glitches.
You completed the mission before making a backup
There is no dependable in-game completed-mission selector to fall back on. Continue from the completed save, or start a new game and create a dedicated pre-mission slot when you reach the mission again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA practical decision guide
- You failed and see a checkpoint retry: use retry if you want to continue the current attempt.
- You failed and no checkpoint retry appears: restart the mission or load a recent save.
- You completed the mission and want to see it again: load a pre-mission save or begin a new game.
- You want to use cheats: save first in a separate slot, do not save while cheats are active, and verify platform and edition compatibility.
- You care about achievements: avoid cheats on the progression file because they may disable achievement unlocks.
Bottom line for San Andreas players
Plan mission replays before you start: preserve a manual save, because completed story missions do not have a confirmed general replay menu. Use checkpoint retry only for an active failed mission, and remember that behavior can differ by mission and edition. Cheats work during gameplay on supported versions, but Rockstar advises against saving after activation because crashes, corruption, and unrecoverable glitches are possible.
