Choose Invite Only if you want a controlled lobby for yourself or invited players, including business work and Sell Missions. Choose Public if you want an open freemode population, rival-player encounters, or the increased high-demand bonus that Rockstar applies to public Sell Missions with rival players. Rockstar’s cited update notes do not state the bonus’s exact percentage, so any precise figure should be treated cautiously.

The practical difference is no longer whether you can run a business: since Title Update 1.61, business activities are available in private sessions. The decision is mainly about privacy and predictable play versus exposure to a populated public lobby and its public-session incentives.

What public and Invite Only sessions actually change

A session is the freemode lobby in which your character, businesses and activities operate. Public sessions are open to other players. Invite Only sessions are private and invitation-controlled. That distinction affects who can appear around you, which social situations you encounter, and whether you can pursue the public-session high-demand bonus on a Sell Mission.

Who can join

In a Public session, you share freemode with the open player population. Other players can be present even when you are not playing with them as a formal team. An Invite Only session starts as a private lobby and is intended for the host and players they invite. Rockstar also identifies Crew and Friends sessions as private session types.

Private does not mean that every activity becomes a solo version. Some events still require a minimum number of participants, and some are unavailable when the session does not meet their requirements.

Business activities and Sell Missions

Business work is available in private sessions. Rockstar’s GTAV Title Update 1.61 notes state that “Business content, including Sell missions, can now be accessed in private sessions.” Rockstar’s announcement for The Criminal Enterprises likewise lists Invite Only, Crew and Friends sessions as private-session types where all Business activities, including Sell Missions, are available: The Criminal Enterprises announcement.

That change removes the old practical reason to enter a public lobby merely to sell stock. You can produce, manage and sell business inventory in a private session while keeping the lobby limited to the players you choose. The mission itself may still involve the normal delivery objectives and time pressure of that business; private access changes the session environment, not the underlying business rules.

The public high-demand bonus

Public Sell Missions can receive an increased high-demand bonus when rival players are in the session. Rockstar documents that the bonus was increased in Title Update 1.61, but the cited notes do not publish a percentage, formula or current cash amount. Treat the bonus as a documented public-session incentive, not as a figure you can calculate from the official notes linked above.

Because the amount is not specified, the choice is a risk-and-reward decision rather than a guaranteed return calculation. A Public session exposes the sale to an open lobby while making the increased bonus available. Invite Only removes that open-lobby exposure but also removes the public-session condition attached to the bonus.

Changing sessions

Title Update 1.61 also changed the session-switching flow: players can join a different session type without first returning to Story Mode. From GTA Online, use the Online menu’s Find New Session command and select the session type offered by the game.

This convenience is separate from Rockstar’s current instructions for creating a new Invite Only session from the main game flow. The support article updated May 26, 2026, still says you must be in Story Mode to start a new Invite Only session through that route: Accessing a new Invite Only Session. In other words, switching session types while already online does not require a Story Mode detour, while the documented start-from-Story-Mode procedure remains the reliable setup path.

How to start an Invite Only session

Use Rockstar’s documented menu sequence when you want a private lobby before doing business work or playing with selected people.

  1. Enter Story Mode.
  2. Open the Pause Menu.
  3. Select Online.
  4. Choose Find New Session.
  5. Select Invite Only Session.

The game loads a new private session. Once inside, invite the players you want to join using the game’s normal player-invitation controls. If you are already in GTA Online and simply want a different lobby, use Online > Find New Session; the 1.61 update notes say you no longer need to return to Story Mode first.

Public vs. Invite Only: side-by-side comparison

Question Public session Invite Only session
Who is present? An open session with other players. A private session controlled through invitations.
Business activities Available. Available, including Sell Missions, under Title Update 1.61’s private-session change.
Sell Mission high-demand bonus Rockstar says public Sell Missions with rival players receive an increased bonus; the cited notes do not state the amount. The public-session bonus condition does not apply because the session is private.
Best fit Players seeking an open freemode population, rivals and public-session incentives. Players prioritizing controlled access, private business work or a selected group.
Freemode Events Events can draw from the open player population, subject to each event’s rules. Events are available in private sessions, but many require enough participants; some are unavailable in private or solo play.
Starting a new session Use Online > Find New Session or the relevant session option. Rockstar’s support route starts in Story Mode, then Pause Menu > Online > Find New Session > Invite Only Session.

Which session should you choose for common goals?

Running a business without an open lobby

Select Invite Only. This is the clearest use case for private play: business content and Sell Missions are explicitly supported, so you do not need to expose a sale to unrelated players simply to access the mission. The private lobby is also easier to coordinate when everyone helping with production or delivery is someone you invited.

Playing with a selected group

Invite Only is the direct choice when you want to decide who enters. Rockstar also identifies Crew and Friends sessions as private options that support Business activities. Choose among those private types according to how you organize your regular group, but use Invite Only when invitation control is the priority.

Chasing the public Sell Mission incentive

Select Public only when you accept the open-lobby exposure in exchange for access to the increased high-demand bonus documented for public Sell Missions with rival players. Since Rockstar does not provide the exact amount in the cited notes, compare the possible additional return with your own tolerance for interruptions rather than assuming a fixed percentage.

Looking for a populated freemode environment

Select Public when the presence of unrelated players is part of the appeal. Public sessions provide the open environment in which rival encounters and other spontaneous freemode interactions can occur. Private sessions can still host some Freemode Events, but participant thresholds may prevent an event from starting when only one or two people are present.

Switching because the current lobby is unsuitable

Use Online > Find New Session and pick the type you need. The 1.61 change means you can move between session types without first loading Story Mode. If you are following the support article’s initial Invite Only setup procedure, begin from Story Mode as described above.

Freemode Events and private-session limits

Private access is broad but not unlimited. Rockstar’s Freemode Events information page, updated February 25, 2024, says Freemode Events are available in private sessions, while warning that many require a minimum number of participants.

Events that need enough participants

An Invite Only lobby with too few eligible players may not start an event even though private sessions support Freemode Events generally. The requirement belongs to the individual event, so check the on-screen prompt and the current rules for the platform and mode you are using.

Time Trials

Time Trials are not available in private or solo sessions according to Rockstar’s support information. If a Time Trial is your immediate objective, an Invite Only lobby is not the appropriate environment; use a session type in which the activity is offered.

Hunt the Beast

Hunt the Beast requires a minimum of 10 players in the session. A small Invite Only group therefore cannot trigger it. The 10-player requirement is stated on Rockstar’s support page and applies to the event’s participant threshold, not to every Freemode Event.

How to decide: a practical risk-and-reward framework

Use the following sequence before launching a sale or activity:

  1. Identify the activity. If it is business production or a Sell Mission, both Public and Invite Only are valid after Title Update 1.61. If it is a Freemode Event, check its participant requirement first.
  2. Decide whether other players are part of the goal. Choose Public for an open population and rival-player interaction; choose Invite Only when unrelated players add no value.
  3. Check whether the public bonus matters. The increased high-demand bonus is tied to public Sell Missions with rival players. Rockstar does not state its exact amount in the cited notes, so do not plan around an invented percentage.
  4. Count the participants you actually have. A private group may be ideal for a sale but insufficient for an event such as Hunt the Beast, which requires 10 players.
  5. Choose the session before committing resources. Loading the desired lobby first avoids beginning a mission in an environment that does not match your objective.

Situations where Public is the better fit

You want the documented bonus condition

If maximizing the possible Sell Mission return is more important than maintaining a controlled lobby, Public is the only option among these two that meets Rockstar’s stated condition for the increased high-demand bonus. The notes establish the increase, not its exact value.

You want open-world social activity

Public sessions are designed for an open freemode population. They are the natural choice when seeing other players, encountering rivals or participating in activities that depend on a larger pool is part of the experience.

Your event needs more people than your private group

When an event’s minimum cannot be met by the players you invited, a public lobby may provide the required population. This is an event-specific decision: not every activity requires a crowd, and some remain unavailable in private or solo sessions regardless.

Situations where Invite Only is the better fit

You are selling stock and want predictable conditions

Invite Only lets you run the Sell Mission without an open lobby. This is especially useful when the additional public bonus is less important to you than keeping the session limited to your own group.

You are learning a business or route

A private session gives you a controlled setting for organizing vehicles, assigning roles and explaining a delivery plan to invited players. The business mission’s objectives remain, but the surrounding lobby is not open to unrelated participants.

You want to avoid choosing a public lobby solely out of habit

Before Title Update 1.61, players often associated business sales with Public sessions. That is no longer necessary: Rockstar explicitly made Business activities, including Sell Missions, available in private sessions. Select Public for a reason—such as the bonus or open freemode—not because private access blocks the sale.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Assuming private means every event is solo-enabled

It does not. Freemode Events can run in private sessions, but many require a minimum number of participants. Time Trials are excluded from private and solo sessions, and Hunt the Beast requires at least 10 players.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quoting a precise high-demand percentage

The official Title Update 1.61 notes reviewed here say the public-session bonus was increased but do not state a numerical amount. Avoid relying on an exact percentage unless you have a current, authoritative source that explicitly provides it.

Returning to Story Mode every time you change lobbies

The 1.61 notes say that is no longer required when joining a different session type. From GTA Online, use Online > Find New Session. Story Mode remains part of Rockstar’s documented initial Invite Only setup route, so distinguish starting a new Invite Only session from changing sessions while already online.

Expecting a private sale to receive the public bonus

The high-demand bonus described by Rockstar is for public Sell Missions with rival players. Invite Only provides private business access, not the public-session bonus condition.

Bottom-line recommendation

For most business-focused play, start in Invite Only: it supports Business activities and Sell Missions while keeping the lobby under your control. Move to Public when you specifically want the open freemode population or are willing to accept that exposure to pursue the increased high-demand bonus. Check event requirements separately, because private-session support does not override participant minimums or restrictions such as the unavailability of Time Trials and the 10-player requirement for Hunt the Beast.
