Pre-release footage and comments from Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson indicate that GTA 6’s wanted system can reach six stars and tracks what police know about Jason and Lucia—not just whether they are nearby. A crime must be witnessed or trigger an alarm to be reported, Nelson says. The game is not yet released, so these details come from reporting and footage analysis, not hands-on testing.
How the GTA 6 wanted system is reported to work
Nelson told GamesRadar+: “The wanted system in GTA 6 requires that someone witness the crime, or an alarm needs to be set off for it to be reported to the law.” That suggests an offense does not automatically become a police report in every circumstance: someone must see it or an alarm must be triggered. The full range of crimes and alarm behaviors has not been documented.

In the extended-look sequence analyzed by GamesRadar+, the wanted meter rises as high as six stars. That is one star beyond GTA V’s five-star cap, according to the report. It is the highest level shown in the pre-release material covered here, not a guarantee that every play situation or final build will behave identically.

The reported sequence displays indicators for details police may know or recognize about Jason and Lucia. GamesRadar+ identifies their clothing, faces, vehicle, and the fact that they are together. The footage offers a glimpse of the system rather than a complete list of recognition rules.
#1 Best Overall
- Vehicle: When the pair changes vehicles in the sequence, the vehicle indicator disappears.
- Group association: Nelson says splitting up can lower police perception, suggesting that being together is a recognition cue.
- Clothes and faces: These appear among the displayed indicators, but the material does not establish exactly how changing appearance affects recognition or resets it.
These are reported cues and examples, not proven universal ways to erase a wanted state. Rockstar has not published a full mechanics manual in the official media material reviewed.
What the white and red stars mean
After direct contact with police breaks in the reported sequence, the stars change from white to red. GamesRadar+ describes this as a continued search without active pursuit. The visual transition is shown in the footage, but Rockstar has not fully documented what the colors mean or the rules governing the transition. Treat “red means searching” as the report’s interpretation, not a confirmed complete description of the system.

How to think about losing the police
Nelson’s advice for a three-star city pursuit is to leave the streets and continue on foot through alleys rather than assume a car is always the best escape. He said: “If you get three stars in the city, it can sometimes be challenging to get away in a vehicle, unless it’s a very fast vehicle or a sports bike. Your best option is usually to do this – get off the streets and get on foot into the alleys.”

That is attributed guidance, not a guaranteed tactic for every pursuit. Nelson also described movement options such as running, leaving a car, jumping, and climbing fences. In practical terms, the reported system points to three questions when contact breaks: which recognition cue might still identify the protagonists, are police actively pursuing or searching, and is movement on foot more useful than staying in a vehicle? The available material does not support ranking escape tactics or promising that any one action will clear heat.

What is still unknown about heat
The pre-release coverage does not establish the duration of heat, whether recognition indicators have separate timers, exactly how appearance changes affect recognition, how each star level changes police behavior, or the complete transition from pursuit to search. Exact timings and star-by-star tactics would therefore be speculation.
Nelson has also said Rockstar tried to make mission systems feel consistent with open-world play: “Anything where a mission can become systemic and it’s a wanted level or robbery system – we try to make it so that it doesn’t feel inconsistent with how the game works in the open world.” This describes design intent; it does not confirm every implementation detail.

Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI page lists November 19, 2026, and PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. As of October 9, 2026, GTA VI is unreleased; the wanted-system details above are based on pre-release reporting and footage, not a playable retail version. Rockstar’s official media listing includes the extended look and trailers, but not a written guide to wanted-level mechanics.
