Choose Nintendo Switch 2 if Zelda is the game you are buying for. Choose PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S if Grand Theft Auto VI is the priority. Rockstar has confirmed GTA VI for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at its November 19, 2026 launch, while Nintendo’s enhanced The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom edition is exclusive to Switch 2. No single console currently covers both priorities through confirmed platform support.
The short answer
Your deciding game should determine the console:
- GTA VI first: Buy a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. Those are the only platforms Rockstar has confirmed for launch.
- Zelda first: Buy Nintendo Switch 2. The enhanced Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is only playable on Switch 2, and the system works in handheld, tabletop and TV modes.
- Both franchises are essential: Plan on two systems, or wait for an official announcement of another GTA VI version. Do not purchase Switch 2 on the assumption that GTA VI will eventually come to it.
The choice between PS5 and Xbox is mainly about your existing game library, friends, services and preferred console features. The cited official material does not establish an overall performance winner between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Which consoles officially support each game?

|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto VI | PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S | November 19, 2026. Xbox’s official listing and PlayStation’s official blog use this date. | No confirmed Switch 2 or PC edition. |

Rockstar’s Customer Support platform page, updated August 18, 2026, says players can pre-order GTA VI for “PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.” That is the current platform statement to rely on. A future port is possible in the abstract, but it remains unannounced until Rockstar publishes it.

What GTA VI buyers need to know
Launch platform and date
GTA VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Xbox’s official product listing states “Available November 19, 2026.” PlayStation Blog gives the same date and describes the game as launching on PS5 with platform-specific immersive features.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
This means a Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, gaming PC or older PlayStation 4/Xbox One cannot currently be treated as a GTA VI launch system. Rockstar’s published platform information does not list any of them.
PS5-specific feature claim
PlayStation Blog says: “Thanks to the close partnership between Sony Interactive Entertainment and Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto VI will play best on PS5 by taking advantage of PS5’s immersive features to deliver a deeply engaging single-player experience when it launches on November 19.”
“Plays best” is PlayStation’s platform claim, not an independent test. It indicates that PS5 owners should expect use of the console’s immersive capabilities, but it does not prove a higher frame rate, resolution or image quality than Xbox Series X|S.

What Zelda buyers get on Switch 2
The Switch 2 Edition is exclusive to the new console
Nintendo’s product page lists The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition with a June 5, 2025 release date and states that it is “only playable on Nintendo Switch 2.” A standard Switch cannot run that enhanced edition.
If you already own the original Switch version, Nintendo supports it on Switch 2 and documents an upgrade-pack route. The original game therefore remains usable, while the Switch 2 Edition is the product intended for the enhanced features below.
Enhancements listed by Nintendo
- Higher resolution: The game can present a sharper image on compatible displays.
- Improved frame rates: Nintendo lists smoother performance than the original Switch release.
- HDR support: Compatible televisions and monitors can display expanded contrast and color.
- Faster loading: Reduced loading time is part of the Switch 2 Edition feature list.
- ZELDA NOTES integration: The edition works with the ZELDA NOTES service in the Nintendo Switch App.
These are Nintendo’s stated product features, not independent benchmark results. Actual display quality depends on the television or monitor, HDR support and the mode in which you play.

Handheld, tabletop and TV play
Nintendo’s Switch 2 product information supports three ways to play: handheld with the console’s screen, tabletop with the system propped up, and docked TV play. That flexibility is a decisive difference from PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, which are home-console platforms in the cited comparison.
PS5 or Xbox Series X|S for GTA VI?
| Decision factor | PS5 | Xbox Series X|S |
|---|---|---|
| GTA VI launch support | Confirmed for November 19, 2026. | Confirmed for November 19, 2026. |
| Published feature statement | PlayStation says GTA VI will use PS5 immersive features and “play best” on PS5. | Xbox’s official listing confirms availability and date; the cited material does not make a comparative performance claim. |
| Best reason to choose it | You already use PlayStation, value its ecosystem, or specifically want the cited PS5 immersive features. | You already own Xbox purchases, play with Xbox friends, or prefer Xbox services and account continuity. |
| Independent performance verdict | Not established by the cited official sources. Do not treat the PS5 wording as a benchmark against Series X|S. | |
Choose PS5 when your ecosystem is PlayStation-based
PS5 is the straightforward choice if your existing digital purchases, accessories, friends list or subscriptions are centered on PlayStation. The official PlayStation statement also gives PS5 a clear feature rationale for GTA VI, although “plays best” remains a manufacturer claim rather than measured evidence.
Choose Xbox Series X|S when your Xbox library matters
Xbox Series X|S makes more sense when you already own Xbox games, use an Xbox account with friends, or rely on Xbox services. Both Series X and Series S are listed together as supported platforms. The cited material does not provide a complete technical comparison between the two models or between Series X|S and PS5, so choose the model and ecosystem that fit your current setup rather than assuming one has a confirmed GTA VI advantage.
Portability and living-room use
Switch 2 is the only option in this comparison with an officially described handheld and tabletop mode. You can continue a Zelda session away from the television, then use the dock for a larger-screen experience.
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are designed as fixed home consoles. They are the confirmed GTA VI choices, but they do not provide the same integrated handheld format described for Switch 2. If portable Zelda is a daily requirement, that difference outweighs small hardware or service preferences.
Backward compatibility and your existing games
Switch 2 and Zelda
Nintendo says the original Tears of the Kingdom Switch release remains supported on Switch 2. Owners can use the documented upgrade-pack path if they want the Switch 2 Edition features. Verify the terms attached to your account and region because the cited product information does not establish a universal upgrade price.
PS5 and Xbox libraries
The supplied official statements establish GTA VI support, but they do not provide a complete backward-compatibility catalog for either console. Before buying, check the manufacturer’s current compatibility list for the specific games you own. Do not assume that every older disc or digital purchase transfers in the same way.

Price, subscriptions and what is not established
A current regional hardware-price comparison is not established in the cited material. PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 pricing can vary by country, storage configuration, bundle, tax, retailer and stock. Compare the exact package available in your region immediately before purchase rather than relying on a global headline price.

The same limitation applies to online-service subscription costs. The evidence here does not establish current regional prices or the particular membership tier needed for every online feature. Confirm the requirements for your account region and the edition you intend to buy.
GTA VI’s published release dates are firm figures from Xbox and PlayStation listings for November 19, 2026. Zelda’s Switch 2 Edition date is Nintendo’s June 5, 2025 release date. Neither source supplies market-share, sales or independent benchmark statistics, so those should not be used to justify a purchase.

You want GTA VI as soon as it launches
- Limit the shortlist to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S because those are Rockstar’s confirmed launch platforms.
- Choose PS5 if its immersive-feature support and PlayStation ecosystem are meaningful to you.
- Choose Xbox if your purchases, friends and services are already on Xbox.
- Check whether the retailer’s physical package uses a download code, as Rockstar says physical buyers receive one.
- Confirm the November 19, 2026 date and the edition you are ordering before payment.
You want the enhanced Zelda experience
- Buy Nintendo Switch 2; Nintendo says the enhanced Tears of the Kingdom edition is only playable there.
- Decide whether you want the game bundled with the console or purchased separately, based on the offers available in your region.
- If you own the original Switch release, check Nintendo’s upgrade-pack path rather than automatically buying a second full copy.
- Use a compatible HDR television or monitor if you want to take advantage of the listed HDR support.
- Install or check the Nintendo Switch App if ZELDA NOTES integration is part of your reason for upgrading.
You want both games
The confirmed route is two systems: Switch 2 for the enhanced Zelda edition and PS5 or Xbox Series X|S for GTA VI. Buying only Switch 2 and hoping for a GTA VI port creates a risk that Rockstar never announces that version. Waiting is sensible if you cannot justify two consoles and GTA VI is not needed at launch; revisit the decision only after Rockstar publishes a new platform listing.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming “next generation” means every console gets GTA VI: Rockstar’s current listing names PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only.
- Confusing the original Zelda release with the Switch 2 Edition: The enhanced edition is a separate product that Nintendo identifies as Switch 2-only.
- Treating a platform marketing claim as a benchmark: “Plays best on PS5” comes from PlayStation and is not an independent PS5-versus-Xbox test.
- Ignoring physical-edition details: Rockstar says physical buyers receive a download code, so inspect the package before assuming a disc contains the whole game.
- Comparing prices without region and bundle context: Hardware and subscription costs are not fixed globally and are not established by the cited evidence.
- Planning around an unannounced port: Future Switch 2 or PC versions should be treated as speculation until Rockstar confirms them.
Decision checklist
- Is GTA VI or Zelda the game you will play first and most often?
- Do you need handheld or tabletop play? If yes, Switch 2 is the relevant choice.
- Are your existing purchases and friends on PlayStation or Xbox?
- Do you specifically value the PS5 immersive features described by PlayStation?
- Have you checked your country’s current console price, stock, bundle and warranty?
- Have you confirmed the game edition, physical download-code terms and account region?
- Would buying two systems be acceptable, or is waiting preferable to assuming an unannounced port?
Final recommendation by priority
| Your priority | Recommended console | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| GTA VI at launch | PS5 or Xbox Series X|S | Rockstar confirms both for November 19, 2026. |
| Enhanced Tears of the Kingdom | Nintendo Switch 2 | Nintendo’s enhanced edition is Switch 2-only and adds higher resolution, smoother frame rates, HDR, faster loading and ZELDA NOTES. |
| Portable Zelda | Nintendo Switch 2 | Nintendo supports handheld, tabletop and TV play. |
| Both franchises | Two systems, or wait | No single console currently has confirmed support for both priorities. |
