Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has confirmed a new crime story starring Jason and Lucia in Leonida, including Vice City, and describes the launch game as a single-player experience. It has not published a complete, measured GTA VI-versus-GTA V feature comparison, so claims about map size, frame rate, artificial intelligence, mission design, vehicle handling, or a future online mode remain expectations rather than established facts.
This guide separates what Rockstar has announced from what the trailers may suggest, explains the current editions and physical packaging, and gives GTA V players a practical way to judge the new game when preorders and launch details change.

Rockstar’s official GTA VI page is the reference for the current game description and platform listing. Because the title is unreleased, any definitive “better than GTA V” statement about technology or systems should wait for retail software and independent testing.

Release date, delay history and what happens before launch
Current date: November 19, 2026
Rockstar currently lists Thursday, November 19, 2026. Its November 6, 2025 announcement states: “Grand Theft Auto VI will now release on Thursday, November 19, 2026.” That announcement replaced the earlier May 26, 2026 target announced in May 2025. The current game page and subsequent announcements continue to use the November date. Treat it as the latest announced schedule, not proof that a physical copy is already available.
Rockstar said the additional time would allow further polish. That is a statement about scheduling, not a performance guarantee. A date can still change, so check the November 2025 release announcement and the live game page when making a time-sensitive purchase or booking leave.
Preloading and physical fulfillment
Rockstar’s June 2026 preorder announcement says digital preloading begins November 12, 2026. Its support information also says the physical code-in-box version is expected to become available for retailer shipping and pickup from November 12. A preload date is not an early-play date: the console should keep the game locked until the official launch time set for your region.

Story and setting: Jason, Lucia and Leonida
A new pair at the center
The official premise follows Jason and Lucia after a failed score. They become entangled in a criminal conspiracy that stretches across Leonida. Rockstar’s Trailer 2 announcement repeats that synopsis, so these characters and the broad setup are confirmed rather than leak-based speculation.
The announced material does not explain whether players switch between Jason and Lucia during missions, how their abilities differ, or how their relationship affects the campaign. Those are sensible questions for anyone coming from GTA V, but they remain unanswered until Rockstar documents the systems or the game launches.
Vice City is part of Leonida
Rockstar’s game page features Vice City within Leonida. That establishes the named setting; it does not establish total land area, travel time, the number of settlements, or whether the world is larger than GTA V’s. A city name and a trailer panorama cannot substitute for a measured map comparison.

For a useful GTA V comparison, separate three claims:
- Confirmed: GTA VI takes place in Leonida and includes Vice City.
- Shown: trailers and the extended look depict selected locations, characters and activities.
- Unconfirmed: the final map boundary, density, traversal systems and the amount of optional content.
Single-player at launch—and what that does not tell us
Rockstar’s June 2026 preorder announcement calls GTA VI a “single-player experience.” That is the clearest official statement about play mode at the time of writing. It tells you to expect a campaign designed for solo play; it does not answer whether an online mode will arrive later, whether it would be included, or whether it would use a successor to GTA Online. Do not treat an online logo, a rumor or a trailer interpretation as an announcement.
The same caution applies to co-op, user-generated content, cross-play, persistent progression and subscription requirements. None is established by the official material cited here. GTA V owners should therefore buy GTA VI for its announced single-player campaign, not for an assumed multiplayer roadmap.
Platforms and technical expectations
Confirmed launch consoles
The announced launch platforms are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not confirmed a PC version in the cited materials, nor has it announced a PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch or cloud version. Do not infer a later platform from the fact that GTA V eventually appeared on multiple generations.
The platform list also means that a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S is a stated requirement for the announced launch version. Storage capacity, download size, display modes, resolution targets and frame-rate targets have not been supplied in the official information covered here.
What the PS5 footage proves—and what it does not
Rockstar says its August 27, 2026 extended look was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5. The source statement is useful: the images came from the game running on the announced console rather than from a separately identified pre-rendered film. However, it does not provide a measured frame rate, resolution, dynamic-resolution behavior, loading performance or final retail settings.
Rockstar’s promotional description calls the footage “the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet.” That is the publisher’s characterization, not an independent GTA V benchmark. Use the August 27, 2026 extended-look announcement for the wording and source context.

Graphics, physics and artificial intelligence
It is reasonable to expect a newer console-only release to present a different visual target from an older cross-generation game, but the available announcements do not quantify the difference. They do not publish comparative lighting tests, crowd counts, destruction models, driving physics, police behavior, animation systems or mission-AI results. Describing any of those as confirmed GTA VI improvements would overstate the evidence.
When reviews and technical analyses become available, look for repeatable measurements: performance modes, frame-time graphs, image-quality tests, loading times and side-by-side scenes captured under the same conditions. Until then, use trailer footage as an indication of artistic direction, not a specification sheet.
Editions, upgrades and the physical box
Standard, Ultimate and the Ultimate upgrade
Rockstar’s support article lists Standard and Ultimate Editions, plus an Ultimate Edition Upgrade that can be purchased separately after redeeming the Standard code. Rockstar describes the Ultimate Edition contents as vehicles, weapons, apparel and other in-game items. The exact package and commercial terms can change, so confirm the current listing before checkout through the Rockstar Store page and your console storefront.
An upgrade path can matter if you buy Standard first, but do not assume the upgrade is available in every region, at every retailer or at the same price as the launch bundle. Keep the original account and redemption details if you may upgrade later.
Code in a box, not a disc
Rockstar says the physical version contains a download code in the box and no disc. You will need an internet connection to redeem and download the game, and the code may be tied to the region of your platform account. Rockstar recommends buying from the country associated with that account to avoid activation problems.
This format changes the practical meaning of “physical.” A sealed box may be giftable, but it does not provide an offline disc that can be installed independently of the account and network. Retail return policies for an opened code product can also differ from disc policies.
Purchase checklist
- Confirm that the listing is for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, not an older-generation or unspecified version.
- Check whether it is Standard, Ultimate or an Ultimate Edition Upgrade.
- For a boxed product, verify that it says download code and no disc.
- Match the code region to the country attached to your console account.
- Check the retailer’s delivery or pickup date; the support article expects physical fulfillment from November 12, while play remains locked until launch.
- Read the current contents and terms on Rockstar’s store or support page because edition details are volatile.
What the trailers establish about the GTA V comparison
Trailer 2, published May 6, 2025, reinforces the Jason-and-Lucia premise and the Leonida conspiracy. The August 2026 extended look adds the statement that it was captured entirely from in-game PS5 footage. Together, those materials support discussion of setting, characters, tone and selected activities shown on screen.

They do not establish a complete feature inventory. A scene showing a vehicle, weapon, crowd, building interior or police encounter proves that the scene exists in the footage; it does not prove that every version has the same behavior, that the feature is systemic, or that it is superior to GTA V’s implementation. Promotional edits also cannot establish how often an activity appears during a full campaign.
Use Rockstar’s Trailer 2 page and the extended-look page as primary sources, while labeling any interpretation as an impression. Avoid presenting leaks, alleged map measurements or fan-made comparisons as Rockstar-confirmed information.

Rockstar’s official VI news listings describe Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album as featuring 34 original tracks. That is a stated count for the album, not a claim about the number of in-game radio songs, stations or licensed tracks. The count and any availability details should be checked against the current GTA VI Newswire index.
Rockstar has also identified a limited-edition Vice City collectible set and lists GTA VI merchandise in its Newswire index. Those references do not establish that a particular item is in stock, that a retailer ships to your country or that any purchase includes game content. Treat collectibles as separate products unless the current listing explicitly says otherwise.
Questions GTA V players should keep open
Will the map be bigger?
There is no official map-size measurement in the cited announcements. Leonida may contain more than the Vice City locations shown in promotional footage, but neither total area nor usable-world density is confirmed. Wait for an official map or independent measurement after release.
Will the graphics run at 60 frames per second?
Rockstar has not announced resolution or frame-rate modes. PS5 capture footage does not answer whether the retail game offers 30-fps, 60-fps or multiple modes. Do not buy a display or console accessory on the assumption of a particular target.

Will GTA VI replace GTA Online?
No. The official statement calls GTA VI single-player and does not announce a separate online mode or successor. Future online plans, if any, require a separate Rockstar announcement.

Is a PC version coming?
Not in the platform information covered here. Rockstar currently lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. A later PC announcement would be new information, not something established by the console launch listing.
Is the Ultimate Edition worth it?
That depends on the value you place on the listed in-game vehicles, weapons, apparel and other items. The official material does not provide a performance advantage for Ultimate, and an Ultimate Edition Upgrade is listed separately. Compare the current contents and price with Standard at the time you order.
A practical decision framework
Buy at launch if you want the confirmed experience
Choose launch purchase when your priority is the announced Jason-and-Lucia campaign in Leonida, including Vice City, on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. Select digital if preload convenience matters, or the code-in-box format if you prefer a boxed purchase and have checked regional compatibility.
Wait if your decision depends on unannounced specifications
Wait for reviews and technical testing if you require a specific frame rate, resolution, PC release, backward compatibility, online mode or verified map scale. None is established by the current official material.
Choose an edition by content, not assumed performance
Standard is the straightforward route to the game. Ultimate is for buyers who specifically want its listed in-game items, while the separate upgrade may suit someone who starts with Standard. Neither edition should be treated as a confirmed graphics or gameplay upgrade.
Bottom line on GTA 6 vs. GTA 5
Rockstar’s next game is a confirmed new single-player Grand Theft Auto set in Leonida, with Jason and Lucia at its center and a November 19, 2026 launch currently listed for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The meaningful differences that can be stated today are the new setting and protagonists, the announced platform generation, the single-player designation, and the new edition and code-in-box purchase structure. Everything beyond those points—map scale, technical performance, detailed mechanics and online plans—needs to be presented as an expectation or an open question until Rockstar or independent testing supplies evidence.
