Short answer: buy Grand Theft Auto VI at launch if you already have a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S and want a new Vice City–Leonida story with Jason and Lucia. Keep playing GTA V if your priority is its established online ecosystem, existing progress, or PC access. As of October 15, 2026, Rockstar and Take-Two have not announced a PC version, GTA V progression transfer, GTA VI Online launch details, or performance targets, so those unknowns should not be part of a purchase promise.
GTA 6 and GTA 5 at a glance
The two games serve different reasons to buy. GTA VI is the new, current-generation single-player release; GTA V is the mature game with a huge installed base and an established multiplayer ecosystem. The table separates confirmed facts from details that remain unannounced.

Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. described the new game in its June 24, 2026 release as follows: “Launching November 19, 2026, for the PlayStation® 5 computer entertainment systems and Xbox Series X|S games and entertainment systems for $79.99, Grand Theft Auto VI features a single-player experience set in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet.” That statement establishes the launch date, consoles, price and single-player positioning; it does not establish a PC edition or an online service.

What you are actually upgrading to
A new Vice City and Leonida story
GTA VI moves the confirmed single-player setting to Vice City and the state of Leonida. Its announced protagonists are Jason and Lucia. That is the clearest reason to upgrade from GTA V: you are not buying a remaster of Los Santos, but a new campaign, cast and fictional state designed for the newer console generation.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
GTA V remains the better fit if you specifically want its three-protagonist structure, Los Santos map, or a campaign you already own and understand. Nothing in the official launch information says that the older map, characters or story will be rebuilt inside GTA VI.
A current-generation console requirement
The confirmed launch platforms are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, phone, or ordinary Windows installation is not listed for launch. If your current console is from the previous generation, the purchase decision includes a hardware upgrade before the game itself.
PC players should treat the platform question as unresolved. Rockstar and Take-Two’s cited launch materials do not list a PC version or a PC date. Do not buy a console, preorder an edition, or plan a release-day schedule on the assumption that a PC port will arrive at a particular time. Wait for an official platform announcement.
Hardware: decide this before comparing editions
If you already own a PS5
A PS5 owner can make a direct software decision: choose whether the new setting and campaign justify a launch purchase. Check free storage, system software updates and the account region that will redeem the game. The official materials supplied for this comparison do not state a required storage size or a frame-rate target, so avoid treating unofficial performance claims as specifications.

If you own an Xbox Series X or Series S
Both Xbox Series X and Series S are named in the launch listing. The Series S has less internal storage and different hardware characteristics from the Series X, but no official GTA VI performance targets are published in the cited material. Make room for the download and verify which Xbox storefront region will redeem your code before buying a physical package from another country.
If you play on PC
Keep GTA V as your active option until Rockstar publishes a GTA VI PC announcement. A powerful PC does not create an officially supported version, and console launch information cannot be converted into a reliable PC date. This is a timing decision, not evidence that a PC edition will never exist.
If you need to buy a console as well
Separate the costs into two decisions: the console and the game. A console purchase made only for one unreleased feature set carries more risk than buying the game for hardware you already own. Check the console’s remaining storage, your display’s available HDMI connection and your network capacity before ordering; the supplied official information does not provide a download-size figure.
Prices and editions
Take-Two lists two launch editions in the United States. The prices below are the announced amounts and can change by territory, tax treatment, retailer, currency conversion or later promotion.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

| Edition | Announced U.S. price | What the official information establishes | Who should consider it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | $79.99 | Base GTA VI game. Available for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. | Most buyers who want the campaign without paying for listed premium extras. |
| Ultimate Edition | $99.99 | Includes the game plus listed extra vehicles, weapons, apparel and story-linked content. The supplied materials do not provide a complete item-by-item list. | Players who value the announced bonus content and want it at launch. |
| Ultimate Edition Upgrade | Price not stated | Rockstar says Standard owners can buy the upgrade separately through the PlayStation or Microsoft storefront after redeeming the game code. | Standard buyers who decide later that the premium content is worth adding. |
The upgrade path reduces the risk of choosing Standard. You do not have to decide the premium content question before playing, although the separate upgrade’s price, availability and exact contents should be checked in your regional storefront when it appears.
Physical versus digital: the important difference
The physical GTA VI package contains a download code and no game disc. In practical terms, buying a box does not give you an offline disc fallback: you still redeem the code, download the game and use the account and storefront associated with that code.
What to check before importing a physical package
- Confirm the code’s account region. A code sold for one country may not redeem on an account registered in another.
- Check the platform printed on the package: PS5 and Xbox codes are not interchangeable.
- Verify the retailer’s release date, return policy and whether the package is the Standard or Ultimate Edition.
- Keep the receipt and code packaging until redemption succeeds.
Rockstar says digital pre-orders can preload from November 12, 2026, and physical code packages are also intended to support preload from that date. “Intended” is not a guarantee that every retailer, territory or platform will expose the same preload moment, so use the platform’s library page to confirm the download has started.

Why Vice City may justify a new purchase
The confirmed Vice City and Leonida setting gives GTA VI a distinct identity rather than asking players to replay the older campaign with sharper graphics. Jason and Lucia provide a new central relationship and a new narrative context. If exploration, a fresh criminal story and seeing Rockstar’s newer interpretation of Vice City are your main motivations, those are legitimate upgrade reasons even before online details are available.

Why GTA V can still be the better single-player value
GTA V has a complete campaign that can be bought and played now. Its three-protagonist design and Los Santos environment remain specific experiences that the new game does not replace. A player who has not finished GTA V may get more immediate value from completing the existing story than from paying launch pricing for an unknown amount of GTA VI content.
GTA Online, GTA+ and the ecosystem question
Do not assume GTA VI Online is ready on day one
The official announcement calls GTA VI a single-player experience. It does not confirm a GTA VI Online launch date, modes, economy, character system, cross-play, subscription requirements or progression relationship with GTA Online. Those omissions matter if multiplayer is the main reason you are considering an upgrade.
Continue evaluating GTA V on the strength of the online features that are actually available, not on expectations that the next game will reproduce them immediately. Rockstar may publish more information later, but no launch feature should be promised until it is officially listed.

Take-Two’s pre-order announcement says digital pre-orders include one free month of GTA+. The same announcement says GTA+ provides access to GTA V and other classic Rockstar titles through its Games Library. Treat that month as a launch promotion attached to eligible digital pre-orders, not as proof that GTA VI Online is included or that the subscription permanently replaces a game purchase. Check the storefront’s eligibility and renewal terms before redeeming it.

Will GTA V progress carry over?
There is no confirmed GTA V-to-GTA VI progression transfer in the cited official materials. That means you should budget and choose an edition as if your GTA V story saves, online characters, money, properties, vehicles and achievements will not automatically appear in the new game.
This is not a statement that transfer will be impossible; it is a boundary on what can responsibly be promised before Rockstar or Take-Two publishes a specific migration policy. Keep your GTA V account and backups intact, and do not delete the older game because you expect its progress to move.
How much value does GTA V still have?
Take-Two reported more than 190 million GTA V units sold in its December 4, 2023 announcement. That figure explains why the older game has such a deep player ecosystem, but it is a historical sales milestone, not a forecast of GTA VI sales or an assurance that every GTA V service will continue indefinitely.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For an existing owner, GTA V’s practical advantages are familiarity, an established online community and a campaign that is immediately playable. Its disadvantages are that it is the older setting and technology, and that it cannot provide the new Jason-and-Lucia story. The right comparison is therefore not “old game versus new graphics” alone; it is a stable, known ecosystem versus a new campaign whose online and migration details remain open.
Which upgrade path fits you?
Buy GTA VI at launch
- You already own a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
- You want the Vice City and Leonida setting more than another year with Los Santos.
- You are comfortable buying a single-player game before GTA VI Online details are announced.
- You accept that GTA V progress may not transfer.
Buy Standard now and decide on Ultimate later
- You want the new campaign but are unsure about vehicles, weapons, apparel and story-linked bonuses.
- You prefer to avoid paying the premium before the complete item list and regional upgrade price are visible.
- You are buying a physical code package and want the flexibility Rockstar says the storefront upgrade provides.
Keep GTA V for now
- You play primarily on PC and need an officially supported version.
- You mainly care about an established online character, property collection or community.
- You do not own a current-generation console and do not want the additional hardware expense.
- You are willing to wait for confirmed details about GTA VI Online, performance and progression.
Wait for more information
Waiting is rational when your purchase depends on a missing fact. PC players should wait for a platform announcement; multiplayer-focused players should wait for GTA VI Online details; collectors should wait for the exact Ultimate content list; and players importing a physical code should wait until account-region compatibility is clear. Waiting does not mean rejecting the game—it prevents an assumption from becoming an expensive requirement.
Pre-order and launch checklist
- Confirm hardware. Select PS5 or Xbox Series X|S only if that is the platform you own or intend to buy.
- Check the storefront region. Match the account, retailer and physical code territory before payment.
- Choose the edition. Use Standard if the campaign is your priority; use Ultimate only when its listed extras justify the premium.
- Plan storage and bandwidth. Free sufficient console storage and allow time for a large download; an official install-size figure is not yet provided.
- Record the order details. Save the receipt, edition, platform and release-date information.
- Watch for preload. The announced preload date is November 12, 2026, but confirm the actual start in your platform library.
- Keep expectations bounded. Do not count on PC timing, GTA V progression transfer, GTA VI Online features or a published frame-rate target until officially confirmed.
Bottom line: what should a GTA V owner do?
If you have the required console and want a genuinely new story, GTA VI is the meaningful upgrade: Vice City, Leonida, Jason and Lucia are the confirmed differentiators. The Standard Edition is the lower-risk purchase because Rockstar says it can be upgraded digitally later. If you are a PC player, a multiplayer-first player, or someone who would need to buy a console solely for this release, keeping GTA V and waiting for official announcements is the more defensible choice. The decision should rest on hardware, timing, price and the appeal of the new setting—not on unconfirmed transfer, online or PC assumptions.
