In the United States, both Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto VI are rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB. Their listed content descriptors are also the same: blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, and use of drugs and alcohol. The interactive elements differ: GTA V lists Users Interact and In-Game Purchases, while GTA VI lists In-Game Purchases.
Those matching labels do not mean the games contain identical scenes or that either is right for a particular child. GTA V has a detailed ESRB content summary; the current GTA VI listing does not. This comparison uses US ESRB ratings and official information available October 9, 2026. Other countries may use different rating systems and descriptors.

How GTA 6 and GTA 5 compare by ESRB rating
The ESRB assigns both games its M for Mature 17+ category. The content descriptors overlap, but the interactive-element notices and detail available in the public rating summaries differ.

ESRB says content descriptors identify content that may have triggered a rating or may matter to a player or parent. They are not a scene-by-scene comparison, and interactive elements are listed separately from content descriptors. What GTA V’s rating summary says
The ESRB describes GTA V as a game in which players take the roles of three criminals in Los Santos. Missions commonly involve car theft, heists, and assassinations. Players use firearms and explosives and can attack civilians. The board says blood-splatter occurs frequently and dismemberment rarely.
The summary also calls out an intense, prolonged torture sequence in which the player responds to prompts. It describes implied and depicted sexual activity, nudity in some settings, sex jokes and other mature humor, marijuana and cocaine use, alcohol consumption and driving under the influence, and strong profanity. These are the ESRB’s descriptions of GTA V; they should not be treated as confirmed descriptions of GTA VI.

What is officially established about GTA VI’s content
The current US ESRB listing gives GTA VI the same seven content descriptors as GTA V and notes In-Game Purchases, but it does not provide a detailed rating summary with scene-level examples. That means parents can see the broad categories the board identifies, but cannot use this listing to determine whether particular scenes or mechanics match GTA V.

Rockstar’s official premise follows Jason and Lucia after an easy score goes wrong and draws them into a criminal conspiracy across the state of Leonida, with Vice City as a central setting. The premise offers story context, not a detailed account of content. Avoid treating alleged scenes or mechanics from leaks or unofficial listings as established facts; the official US rating page is the strongest current source for the rating.

What the different interactive notices mean for families
GTA V’s ESRB listing includes Users Interact as well as In-Game Purchases; GTA VI’s listing includes In-Game Purchases. These notices are distinct from the mature-content descriptors. They are a reason to check the final game, console, and account settings rather than assume that the previous game’s online features, communications, or purchase arrangements carry over unchanged.
PlayStation’s product page says some features may require internet access, an account, or additional fees, and points families to age restrictions in the PlayStation Family App. Rockstar and Take-Two described GTA VI as a single-player experience in the cited pre-release materials, but that does not establish every post-launch feature or platform-service requirement. Check the game and console settings at purchase and launch.

Platforms, release timing, and physical purchase format
As of October 9, 2026, official listings name PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for GTA VI and list November 19, 2026 as its scheduled release date. The release date is still in the future as of that date. PlayStation says there is no PS4 version. Rockstar Support lists Standard and Ultimate editions. Recheck platform, edition, and release details near purchase because they can change.

Rockstar Support says the physical retail box contains a code for a digital download, not a game disc. Code redemption may depend on the region associated with the platform account, so confirm compatibility before buying a boxed copy. How to decide whether either game is appropriate for your child
- Check the rating for your country. ESRB’s M for Mature 17+ is the US category; other regional boards can use different labels and descriptors. Read the local rating and any available detailed summary.
- Consider the child, not just the label. Think about age, maturity, and sensitivities to violence, sexual material, language, drug and alcohol use, or disturbing scenes. A rating is guidance, not an individualized suitability decision.
- Use the detail that is actually available. GTA V’s ESRB summary gives examples of specific content. GTA VI’s current listing supplies descriptors without an equivalent scene-level summary, so do not infer its exact scenes from GTA V.
- Review console and account controls. ESRB says parental controls can manage rating limits, play time, in-game purchases, and internet access. PlayStation points families to Family App age restrictions. Check the settings on the account and console the child will use.
- Confirm purchase and connectivity details. Review the current platform requirements, account and internet needs, spending controls, and boxed-version format before buying. A console setting or physical box does not change a game’s content rating.
