GTA 6 vs GTA 5 at a glance

If your priority is a new story and a new Vice City-focused world, GTA VI is the game to watch. If you want a playable Grand Theft Auto immediately, or you need PC, PS4, or Xbox One support, GTA V is the confirmed choice.

What platforms will GTA 6 be on?
Rockstar’s current GTA VI platform materials list only PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Take-Two’s investor announcement also names those two console families for the November 19, 2026 launch. No PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo system, cloud platform, or PC launch has been confirmed in those materials.
PlayStation 5
PlayStation 5 is a confirmed GTA VI platform. The announcement covers the PlayStation 5 computer entertainment systems, so a PS5 owner is within the stated launch audience. A separate PS4 edition is not listed.
Xbox Series X|S
Both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S are included in the confirmed Xbox Series X|S platform designation. The materials do not establish separate feature or resolution targets for the two Xbox models.
What the platform announcement does not establish
A platform list is not a promise of every edition that may appear later. It confirms the systems named at the time of the announcement. Because no PC edition or timing appears in the current official materials, statements that GTA VI is definitely coming to PC, or that give a PC date, go beyond what is confirmed.
Will GTA 6 be on PC?
There is no confirmed GTA VI PC release in the current official platform information. That is different from saying a PC version will never exist. It means there is no announced PC platform or date that can be used as a firm buying or scheduling decision.
GTA V has a different status: Rockstar’s current product page lists a PC version, including the upgraded PC edition. A PC player therefore has an officially supported way to play GTA V now, while a PC player waiting for GTA VI has no confirmed launch timetable to plan around.

GTA VI: Leonida and Vice City
Rockstar identifies GTA VI’s fictional state as Leonida, with Vice City as its neon-soaked urban center. The official wording, “Only in Leonida Vice City, USA,” establishes both the state and the city that anchor the setting.
Vice City is a return to a familiar series name, but GTA VI is not simply a re-release of an older game. The confirmed material describes a new game in Leonida and does not publish a complete map, travel system, mission catalog, or activity list. Claims about exact map dimensions, the number of settlements, or particular mechanics should therefore be treated as unconfirmed until Rockstar documents them.
GTA V: Los Santos and Blaine County
GTA V takes place in Los Santos and Blaine County. Los Santos supplies the dense urban environment, while Blaine County provides the surrounding region used by the story and open-world activities. This setting is already playable across current and previous console generations and PC.
The locations create a clear atmospheric distinction without requiring speculation about unannounced systems. GTA VI is presented through Leonida and Vice City; GTA V is built around Los Santos and Blaine County. The confirmed information establishes them as the two principal characters, but it does not provide a complete biography, character-switching specification, mission structure, or relationship system. Those details should not be presented as settled features.
GTA V’s Franklin, Michael, and Trevor
GTA V’s story follows Franklin, Michael, and Trevor. Rockstar’s product description frames them as a young street hustler, a retired bank robber, and a terrifying psychopath whose lives become entangled with the criminal underworld, the U.S. government, and the entertainment industry. Their interwoven stories are the defining single-player structure of GTA V.
That makes the protagonist comparison concrete: GTA VI has a confirmed two-person central focus, while GTA V’s campaign is organized around three playable leads. It does not, by itself, prove how often players will control either GTA VI character or whether its structure will copy GTA V.

GTA V has the clear advantage in confirmed online maturity. Rockstar describes GTA Online as an evolving multiplayer universe supporting up to 30 players. In a 2022 current-generation announcement, Rockstar referred to more than 40 major GTA Online updates. That is a documented history of ongoing content, not a prediction about GTA VI.
GTA VI’s official information used for this comparison confirms a single-player experience but does not publish a complete equivalent list of online modes, player counts, updates, or launch systems. Consequently, it is not accurate to claim that GTA VI will launch with a particular online structure, or that it will immediately match GTA V’s accumulated service content.
Choose GTA V when your main requirement is an established multiplayer environment with a substantial documented update history. Choose GTA VI for its new campaign premise and setting, while accepting that the available official feature list is narrower before launch.

These are targets and features Rockstar described for GTA V’s current-generation release in 2022. “Up to 4K” and “up to 60 frames per second” are not guarantees that every mode simultaneously delivers both values, and they are not a specification for GTA VI. GTA VI’s final performance modes, resolution options, and audio or controller features remain to be detailed in the official information available here.
When does GTA 6 launch, and what does it cost?
GTA VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026. Take-Two’s investor release gives a launch reference of $79.99 for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. Treat that figure as the stated launch reference, not a universal final price for every country, retailer, edition, tax regime, or later promotion.
Rockstar also confirms a physical package containing a download code. That wording matters if you expect a disc: verify the exact package description and regional listing before purchasing, because a physical box with a download code is not the same as a game disc.
Retail prices and edition details can change between announcement and release. Check the store listing for your country immediately before ordering, including the platform, edition, included content, and whether the package is a code or disc.
Should you buy GTA 5 now or wait for GTA 6?
