Short answer: the best current evidence points to GTA VI running at about 1440p internally, upscaled to a 4K output and targeting a mostly stable 30 frames per second on base PlayStation 5. Rockstar has not confirmed a 60fps mode, a 40fps mode, a PS5 Pro mode or final Xbox resolution targets. The footage also suggests that ray-traced lighting and reflections, rather than a high-refresh performance preset, are receiving a large share of the rendering budget.
What is officially known about GTA VI performance
Rockstar lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the launch platforms for Grand Theft Auto VI, with a release date of November 19, 2026. That is the complete confirmed console list at present; there is no announced PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch or PC launch version.
Rockstar’s extended-look material is explicitly described as “Captured entirely from in-game footage on the PlayStation 5.” It is therefore useful evidence of the visual target, but it is not the same thing as a published retail specification. A trailer can be captured from a development build, use a controlled scene and receive additional tuning before release.
Rockstar has not published a frame-rate target, internal-resolution target or final list of graphics modes. In particular, no official source confirms 60fps, 40fps, a named “Performance” or “Fidelity” menu, a PS5 Pro-specific preset, or an Xbox Series X resolution advantage. Treat claims that present any of those as settled launch facts as unverified.

What the analyzed PS5 footage actually shows
Digital Foundry’s August 2026 analysis, summarized by GamesRadar, examined the PlayStation 5-captured footage rather than shipped game code. Its measurements put the internal render at approximately 1440p, followed by an upscale to a 4K output. The analysis found a relatively stable 30fps, with only occasional single-frame drops in the material reviewed. The associated podcast listing calls its performance segment “30 FPS only.”
Those observations answer the practical question “What does the current footage look like?” They do not answer “What exact mode will the retail game expose?” The distinction matters because Rockstar can change resolution scaling, reconstruction, effects quality and frame pacing between a promotional build and the release candidate.
A 30fps result means each completed frame is displayed for about 33.3 milliseconds. A 60fps result would halve that interval to about 16.7 milliseconds, making camera movement and driving input feel more immediate. The analyzed material does not demonstrate that higher-refresh behavior; it demonstrates a graphics-first presentation that generally holds 30fps.

Resolution: 1440p internal rendering is not the same as native 4K
Internal resolution versus output resolution
Internal, or render, resolution is the pixel grid used while the game calculates geometry, lighting and materials. Output resolution is the signal sent to the television or monitor. A game can render internally at 2560×1440 (commonly called 1440p) and then produce a 3840×2160 4K signal through upscaling. The display reports 4K even though the original scene was not calculated at native 4K.
The current analysis indicates that GTA VI’s observed PS5 footage follows that pattern: approximately 1440p internally and 4K output. “Approximately” is important because modern engines can use dynamic resolution, changing the internal pixel count from scene to scene to protect frame time.

Why the upscale can look soft
The analysis describes a straightforward spatial upscale. Such an upscale invents missing output pixels from nearby information; it does not reconstruct detail from multiple frames in the way a temporal or machine-learning reconstruction system might. Fine wires, foliage, distant signage and thin geometry can therefore look softer or show more aliasing than a native 4K image.
GamesRadar’s summary also notes visible aliasing and, in some scenes, noisy or smeared ray-traced reflections. These are observations of the captured material, not a guarantee that every retail scene will look identical. A patch could alter anti-aliasing, reconstruction or reflection denoising without changing the nominal output resolution.

A graphics-first renderer
The analyzed footage uses ray-traced lighting and reflections alongside a dense open-world scene. Ray tracing calculates how light and reflections interact rather than relying only on precomputed or screen-space approximations. It can improve shadowing, indirect light and reflective surfaces, but it consumes GPU time and often requires denoising that can introduce shimmer or blur.
GTA VI also has to simulate a large, continuously streamed world: traffic, pedestrians, animation, weather, physics, reflections and long sightlines. The available evidence does not provide a separate budget for each system, so it would be misleading to claim that any one feature alone determines the frame rate. The reasonable reading is that Rockstar is prioritizing scene complexity and lighting quality while accepting a 30fps cadence in the footage shown.
Frame pacing matters as much as the headline number
A locked 30fps with even frame pacing can feel steadier than a nominally higher rate that repeatedly misses its frame-time deadline. The Digital Foundry measurements found only occasional single-frame drops in the reviewed footage, which suggests consistency in that sample. They do not establish how busy retail missions, multiplayer activity or future patches will behave.

Does GTA VI have a performance mode?
There is no confirmed answer yet. Rockstar has not documented a retail graphics menu or named modes. The observed 30fps presentation could become the only option, or the final game could expose multiple presets that were not visible in the promotional capture. Until Rockstar publishes those settings, “performance mode” should be treated as a question, not a product feature.
A conventional performance mode would normally reduce some combination of internal resolution, ray-tracing quality, crowd or traffic density, shadow quality and reflection detail to raise the frame rate. A fidelity-oriented mode would make the opposite trade-off. That terminology is common across console games, but it is not evidence that GTA VI will use the same labels or offer the same choices.
There is also no reliable confirmation of a 40fps option. A 40fps mode can be useful on a 120Hz display because 120 divides evenly by 40, but it still requires a substantial reduction in frame time compared with 30fps. No official GTA VI specification establishes that mode.
PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S: what can be compared now
The launch platforms are confirmed, but platform-specific retail performance is not. The table separates documented facts from measurements of one promotional capture.
| Platform or claim | What is established | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Rockstar says the extended look was captured entirely in-game on PS5. Analysis of that footage measured approximately 1440p internal rendering, 4K output and mostly stable 30fps. | Final retail resolution, frame-rate cap, menu options and behavior in every scene. |
| Xbox Series X | Rockstar lists the console as a launch platform. | An Xbox-specific resolution, frame-rate target, ray-tracing setting or advantage over PS5. |
| Xbox Series S | Rockstar lists the console as a launch platform. | Internal resolution, effects reductions, frame-rate target and whether its settings differ materially from Series X. |
| PS5 Pro | No separate launch specification is published in the available material. | A PS5 Pro mode, higher resolution, improved ray tracing, 60fps option or enhanced image reconstruction. |
| 60fps or 40fps mode | No official confirmation. | Availability on any console, resolution trade-offs and frame-pacing behavior. |
Because there is no shipped-code test, it is too early to name a console with the “best graphics.” A valid comparison needs the same scene captured on each platform and measurements of frame-time consistency, internal resolution, reconstruction quality, ray-traced lighting and reflections, and simulation density. Promotional footage from one PS5 build cannot supply those comparisons.

How to judge GTA VI image quality when reviews and patches arrive
Check the actual frame-time graph
Average frames per second can hide stutter. Look for sustained 16.7ms frame times in a 60fps mode or 33.3ms in a 30fps mode, rather than a brief peak in an empty street. Drops during driving, combat, weather changes and crowded downtown areas are more informative than a static benchmark.
Separate output resolution from reconstructed detail
Confirm whether a tester is reporting the display signal, the internal render resolution or an estimated dynamic range. A 4K output label alone does not prove native 4K rendering. Inspect distant foliage, thin cables, signage and moving objects for shimmer, ghosting and edge stability.
Inspect reflections and lighting in motion
Ray-traced reflections can look excellent in one angle and noisy in another, especially when denoising has limited information. Compare wet roads, glass, mirrors and night scenes while the camera moves. Note whether reflections remain stable or smear behind moving objects.
Record the mode, patch and display conditions
Independent results should identify the console model, game patch, selected mode, display resolution, HDR status and whether variable-refresh-rate output was enabled. Without those details, two apparently conflicting reports may simply be testing different configurations.

A 4K HDR display can show the announced 4K output and the lighting contrast demonstrated in the footage. HDMI 2.1 becomes relevant if the final game offers 4K, 120Hz output or variable refresh, but there is no GTA VI-specific 120fps requirement confirmed today. Do not buy a display solely on the assumption that a 60fps or 120fps mode will ship.
Best Value
If the retail game remains a 30fps title, a television with good motion handling, low input latency and a clean 4K HDR mode may matter more than its maximum refresh rate. Disable aggressive motion interpolation when evaluating the game’s native frame pacing; interpolation adds display-generated frames and does not increase the game’s simulation rate.
On a variable-refresh display, enable the feature only after checking the console’s supported range and the game’s own behavior. VRR can reduce tearing and soften brief frame-time fluctuations, but it cannot turn a 30fps game into 60fps.
Release editions, price and what you are actually buying
Take-Two’s preorder announcement lists a US launch price of $79.99. Regional prices, taxes and later editions can differ. Rockstar’s support documentation says the physical edition contains a download code, so buyers should check whether their console has a disc drive and whether the code is redeemable in their account region. The digital and physical formats do not establish different graphics modes; performance depends on the console and the game’s software configuration.

Xbox Series X|S is a legitimate alternative because Rockstar has announced it for launch, but no evidence currently supports paying extra for one console on the promise of a superior GTA VI resolution or frame rate.
Practical buying decision before November 19, 2026
- Choose a supported console first. The announced launch hardware is PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- Assume the observed baseline, not an unannounced upgrade. Plan for a graphics-focused presentation around 30fps until Rockstar states otherwise.
- Buy a display for your wider library. A 4K HDR screen is sensible for current consoles, but do not treat HDMI 2.1 or 120Hz as a guaranteed GTA VI requirement.
- Wait for retail testing if image quality is your priority. Look for frame-time captures and like-for-like console comparisons after release.
- Reconsider after official mode details appear. A patch or launch-day specification could change the resolution, reconstruction method or available presets.
Bottom line on GTA 6 performance modes
As of October 18, 2026, the defensible expectation is a visually ambitious GTA VI build that outputs 4K from an internal resolution near 1440p and runs at a generally steady 30fps on the PS5 footage Rockstar showed. Ray-traced lighting, reflections and world density appear to take priority over a demonstrated high-frame-rate mode. Rockstar has not yet published the final retail specifications, so 60fps, 40fps, PS5 Pro enhancements and Xbox-specific advantages remain open questions rather than launch promises.
