Both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are officially announced platforms for Grand Theft Auto VI, currently scheduled for November 19, 2026. Rockstar says the game “Plays Best On PS5,” but that is promotional wording—not a published comparison showing that the PS5 version has a higher resolution, frame rate, or better image quality. Choose based on the console, library, services, and configuration that suit you now; there is not yet an official head-to-head performance result to settle the choice.
What is confirmed about GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox?
Rockstar lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as platforms for Grand Theft Auto VI. Take-Two’s announcement gives November 19, 2026 as the current launch date. Because that date is still in the future, check the official GTA VI page and Take-Two announcement for changes before buying a console specifically for the game.
The announcement lists digital storefronts and global retailers as sales channels, but does not establish a physical disc edition or different console-exclusive gameplay content. The official platform list also does not confirm a PC version or date; that is not evidence that a PC release will never happen.

Does Rockstar’s “Plays Best On PS5” message mean PS5 is technically better?
Rockstar’s GTA VI page uses the phrase “Plays Best On PS5.” The company’s extended-look video is described as “Captured entirely from in-game footage on the PlayStation 5.” Those statements establish Rockstar’s promotional positioning and the source of that video footage; they do not provide Xbox results or a measured PS5-versus-Xbox comparison.

Neither source specifies comparative resolution, frame rate, image quality, or platform-specific features. Treat the statement as a reason to wait for reliable platform-specific details if technical performance is your deciding factor—not as proof of a particular advantage.
What console specifications can—and can’t—tell you
Manufacturer specifications offer hardware context, but they cannot predict how this particular game will perform. Microsoft lists the Xbox Series X GPU at 12 TFLOPS, while Sony’s instruction manual for the CFI-21XX PS5 model lists 10 TFLOPS. These are manufacturer figures, not GTA VI benchmarks; the difference alone does not establish which version will look or run better.

How to choose between PS5 and Xbox for GTA 6
Start with the games and people you already play with
Consider which console holds your existing games, subscriptions, friends, and multiplayer groups. A platform switch can mean rebuilding a library or coordinating with people who use a different system. If you already prefer one console’s ecosystem, that practical value may outweigh an unverified technical difference in a game that has not launched.

Use the controller and online services you are most comfortable with, and check how your existing subscriptions and play habits fit each platform. The available GTA VI announcements do not establish a console-specific service bundle or exclusive feature that should override those preferences.

Check the exact model, storage, and disc needs
Compare the actual consoles sold in your area rather than relying on a model name alone. Xbox Series X storage options listed by Microsoft include 1 TB and 2 TB; Sony’s cited manual is for a particular PS5 model and says configurations can vary. Check whether the exact unit includes a disc drive if you want to use discs, and confirm local model details before purchase. The GTA VI announcement does not confirm a physical disc edition.
Compare the total cost where you live
Take-Two announced a U.S. game price of $79.99. That is the game price, not the cost of either console, and the announcement does not provide a regional price table or current console prices. Compare the current local price of the console configuration you want plus the game, and verify availability and any relevant service costs before deciding.

What to do if performance is your deciding factor
Wait for reliable GTA VI-specific technical details or direct comparisons that report the version tested and the conditions. Useful evidence would identify resolution, frame rate, image quality, and any platform-specific features rather than infer a winner from general hardware figures. Until that evidence exists, neither the TFLOPS specifications nor Rockstar’s promotional PS5 wording answers how the two versions will compare in play.
