GTA V Story Mode is the self-contained, scripted heist campaign starring Franklin, Michael and Trevor. GTA Online is a separate, continuously updated version of Los Santos built for solo play or multiplayer sessions of up to 30 players. They share the same broad setting and core game technology, but they are not the same experience and are not always sold in the same product package.
The most important buying check is the edition name: some Grand Theft Auto V listings include both Story Mode and GTA Online, while GTA Online is also sold as a standalone product. Check the current listing for your platform and region before purchasing.

GTA 5 Story Mode vs. GTA Online at a glance
| Category | GTA V Story Mode | GTA Online |
|---|---|---|
| Core format | Scripted single-player campaign | Evolving online world with missions, activities and multiplayer features |
| Main characters | Franklin Clinton, Michael De Santa and Trevor Philips | A player-created online character |
| Setting | Los Santos and Blaine County in a fixed campaign timeline | A persistent GTA universe that receives new content over time |
| Players | One player | Solo play is supported; online sessions can support up to 30 players, although individual activities may have lower limits |
| Progression | Story missions, heists, character abilities and campaign completion | Character, property, business, vehicle and activity progression in the online economy |
| Campaign narrative | Full three-protagonist heist story | Separate online narratives and missions, not the complete Story Mode campaign |
| Purchase relationship | Included in editions that explicitly list Story Mode or Grand Theft Auto V | Included with many GTA V editions and also available separately |
| Account requirements | On console, a Rockstar Games account is not required for Story Mode itself; on PC, an account is required for installation | Requires the relevant platform network access and Rockstar account functionality; PC installation and online play require a Rockstar Games account |
Those differences answer most buying questions. Choose Story Mode for a directed campaign with authored characters and set pieces. Choose Online for an ongoing character-and-world experience that can be played alone or with other people.

A complete, scripted heist campaign
Story Mode follows three criminals whose lives collide: Franklin, a young street hustler; Michael, a retired bank robber; and Trevor, a volatile and dangerous accomplice. Their separate problems converge as they become involved with major heists and threats from organized criminals, the U.S. government and the entertainment industry.

The campaign is authored from beginning to end. Missions arrive in a designed sequence, dialogue and cinematics advance the plot, and major decisions can alter the way later events unfold. You are not building a business empire from an empty online account; you are moving through a story written around three established protagonists.
Why three protagonists matter
You can switch between Franklin, Michael and Trevor during much of the campaign. Each has a distinct personality, skill profile and social circle, so the same city feels different depending on whom you control. Missions often use the ability to change characters as part of their design, especially during larger heists.
This structure also gives Story Mode a clear rhythm: exploration, preparation, a mission or heist, and consequences that feed the next part of the narrative. You can leave the campaign and explore, but the world is fundamentally organized around that authored story.

What progression looks like
- Completing missions advances the central plot and unlocks additional activities.
- Character abilities and equipment develop as you play.
- Heist preparation and approach choices provide variation without turning the game into an open-ended service.
- Completion is measured against a finite campaign and optional activities rather than an endless content schedule.
Story Mode is therefore the better fit if you want to pause whenever you like, play without other users in the session, and reach a defined ending. Its offline-style campaign structure is also easier to understand: the game tells you what the next major objective is, even when the open world gives you freedom between missions.
What GTA Online is
An evolving online universe
Rockstar describes GTA Online as a dynamic, ever-evolving online universe for up to 30 players. You create or control an online character rather than taking the role of Franklin, Michael or Trevor as the permanent lead. The world supports missions, competitive and cooperative activities, properties, businesses, vehicles and other additions released over time.
“Online” describes the connected service and its shared-world design, not a requirement to join a large group every time you play. Rockstar says GTA Online can be enjoyed solo or with friends. You can enter a session alone, complete activities designed for one player, or invite others when a mission or activity benefits from cooperation.

- Experience the world of Grand Theft Auto V like never before with the power of the PlayStation 4.
- Explore the City of Los Santos, the countryside and even the ocean.
- Play through an epic single player experience using three very different characters.
- Join your friends in GTA Online and see what trouble you can cause.
- Play golf, tennis, see a film or call someone and just hang out.
Solo does not mean identical to Story Mode
Playing GTA Online alone removes the need to coordinate with other people, but it does not turn the mode into the Story Mode campaign. You still use an online-created character, online progression systems and the service’s activity structure. The goals, menus, economy and mission flow are different.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Likewise, a 30-player session does not mean every mission places 30 people together. The advertised figure is a session capacity. Individual jobs, races, interiors and cooperative missions can use smaller groups or a single participant.
Progression in the online world
Online progression is less about finishing one plot and more about expanding what your character can do. Activities and earnings can support access to vehicles, properties, businesses and additional missions. The service’s content changes over time, so the exact selection of activities depends on the current platform version and live service state.
This model suits players who enjoy returning to the same character, collecting resources and choosing their own goals. It is less suitable if you want every major objective to be delivered as one continuous, tightly paced campaign.
Is GTA Online the same as GTA 5?
No. “GTA 5” usually refers to Grand Theft Auto V, the product that contains Story Mode and, in many editions, GTA Online. GTA Online is the connected mode within that broader product family, but it is also offered as a standalone purchase on supported platforms.
Think of the relationship this way:
- Grand Theft Auto V edition with both modes: gives you the campaign and the online universe.
- Standalone GTA Online: gives you the online experience without automatically granting the full Story Mode campaign.
- Story Mode upgrade: Rockstar support has described purchase prompts inside standalone GTA Online that open the relevant platform store so an eligible owner can buy Story Mode separately.
Store names, packaging and availability can vary by platform and region. Read the exact listing rather than relying on a product thumbnail or an assumption that every copy includes both modes.

Does GTA Online include Story Mode?
Standalone GTA Online should not be treated as the full Story Mode campaign. The three-protagonist campaign is a separate product component, and an edition must explicitly include Story Mode or Grand Theft Auto V with Story Mode for you to receive it.
There is some narrative material inside Online, which is why this question is confusing. Rockstar has used online updates to bring elements of the GTAV story into the present-day online setting. Two examples are The Contract and Short Trips:
The Contract
Rockstar described The Contract as bringing GTAV’s story into present-day GTA Online. It adds its own sequence of online missions and characters, but it does not replace the original campaign starring Franklin, Michael and Trevor as a complete standalone story.
Recommended Free Tools
Short Trips
Short Trips are cooperative story missions in GTA Online. In a 2022 update, Rockstar said they would become accessible from the Jobs menu without requiring players to complete The Contract missions first. That change improved access to the missions; it did not convert GTA Online into the full Story Mode campaign.
These examples show narrative overlap, not product equivalence. Buying Online alone does not give you every Story Mode mission, cutscene or campaign progression system.
Which mode should you choose?
Choose Story Mode if you want a finished campaign
- You prefer authored characters and a clear sequence of missions.
- You want to play Franklin, Michael and Trevor specifically.
- You want a mostly self-contained experience that does not depend on other players or a live service.
- You prefer a defined ending and campaign completion goals.
Choose GTA Online if you want an ongoing sandbox
- You want to create and develop your own online character.
- You enjoy returning for new activities and updates.
- You want the option to play solo while retaining multiplayer features.
- You want to cooperate or compete with friends when convenient.
Choose an edition containing both if you want flexibility
If you are undecided, an edition that explicitly includes Story Mode and GTA Online avoids the most common limitation. You can complete the campaign first, then use the same broad setting as a starting point for the online experience. Confirm the platform, edition name and included components before checkout.

Buying and installing the correct version
- Identify your platform. Check whether you are buying for PC, PlayStation or Xbox, and note the exact console generation where the store distinguishes versions.
- Read the feature list. Look for separate statements that Story Mode and GTA Online are included. “GTA Online” by itself does not establish that the campaign is part of the purchase.
- Check regional availability. Rockstar has offered standalone and bundled options, but store configuration can differ by country and platform.
- Review account and network requirements. Console Story Mode can be played without a Rockstar Games account, while certain online features require one. PC installation and online play require a Rockstar Games account.
- Install the mode you bought. A standalone Online purchase may show Story Mode purchase prompts in the game or platform store, but access remains a separate transaction where offered.
Prices, promotions, stock and current store packaging change over time, so those details must be verified on the live platform store rather than assumed from an older article or a physical-box listing.
Account, internet and platform requirements
Console Story Mode
Rockstar’s support guidance says a Rockstar Games account is not required to play Story Mode on console. That does not remove the platform’s own account, installation or system requirements. Online features accessed from the console version can require account and network services.
PC
On PC, a Rockstar Games account is required for installation and online play. A PC copy also depends on the requirements of the store and launcher through which it is activated. Check the current PC listing for operating-system, hardware, storage and network requirements; the mode comparison alone does not establish those specifications.
GTA Online connectivity
GTA Online is a connected service. Even when you play an activity alone, you are using the online mode and its account, platform-network and service requirements. A solo session should therefore not be confused with an offline mode.
Generation-specific features
Platform features are not universal across every release. In its March 2022 announcement for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar described generation-specific improvements for the newer consoles. On PlayStation 5, the announcement specifically mentioned DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers.

Common misconceptions
“Online” means I must always play with strangers
Not necessarily. Rockstar states that GTA Online can be enjoyed solo or with friends. You still need the online service and its requirements, but you can choose activities and sessions that do not involve a large group.
“GTA Online” is just the multiplayer menu inside Story Mode
It is a separate mode with its own character, progression and evolving content. The shared setting and familiar map do not make its objectives or economy identical to the campaign.
Buying GTA Online automatically unlocks the campaign
Standalone Online does not automatically establish ownership of Story Mode. Look for an explicit Story Mode or Grand Theft Auto V inclusion, or use the supported in-game or platform-store upgrade path where available.
Online updates are extra Story Mode chapters
Online updates can contain story-driven missions and returning characters, including The Contract and Short Trips. They remain Online content and do not provide the complete original campaign.
A 30-player capacity means every activity has 30 players
The up-to-30 figure describes the online session capacity cited by Rockstar. Specific missions and activities can support fewer participants or be designed for solo play.
A simple decision checklist
- Do you want Franklin, Michael and Trevor? Buy an edition with Story Mode.
- Do you want an authored beginning-to-end heist narrative? Start with Story Mode.
- Do you want a personal character and continuing activities? Choose GTA Online.
- Do you want to play alone but keep online progression? GTA Online supports solo play, subject to its online requirements.
- Do you want both experiences? Select a listing that explicitly includes Story Mode and GTA Online.
- Are you buying on PC or a newer console? Check account, network, generation and controller-feature requirements for that exact platform.
Bottom line: campaign or service, not two names for the same mode
Story Mode is GTA V’s finite, character-led heist campaign. GTA Online is a separate, evolving online universe where you develop your own character and can play solo or with friends. They overlap in setting and can share story characters, but Online does not contain the complete Story Mode campaign by default.
For the safest purchase, verify whether the current platform listing includes Story Mode, GTA Online or both. That single check prevents the most common misunderstanding.
