For a normal aircraft landing in Grand Theft Auto V, check your current vehicle controls, lower the landing gear, and approach the runway steadily and level. If you mean Trevor’s cargo plane in “Minor Turbulence,” the mission ends with a forced escape after fighter jets attack—not a conventional runway landing.
How to land a plane in GTA 5
- Check your aircraft controls. Enter a vehicle, open the Pause Menu, then go to Settings to view the vehicle controls. The displayed binding depends on your platform and configuration. Rockstar also cautions that changing controls while in a vehicle affects on-foot controls, and changes made on foot affect vehicle controls. - Set up your approach. Line up with the runway and avoid abrupt turns or sharp pitching close to the ground. Aim to keep the aircraft level as you descend; sudden corrections can make touchdown harder to manage.
- Lower the landing gear. Use the landing-gear control shown in the in-game vehicle-control display. The official GTA V manual identifies raising and lowering aircraft landing gear as a control.
- Touch down smoothly. Keep the aircraft steady and level through touchdown, then continue along the runway while slowing down. If the approach is unstable, climb and try again rather than forcing a landing.
Aircraft handling also depends on the character’s Flying Stat. The manual says that increasing it makes flying and landing smoother; flying improves the stat, and Pilot School is another way to develop it. The manual gives no numeric threshold or guaranteed landing formula.
What happens to Trevor’s plane in “Minor Turbulence”?
“Minor Turbulence” is a different situation from an ordinary landing. Trevor hijacks a Merryweather cargo plane and heads toward McKenzie Field, but fighter jets attack. The mission walkthrough describes Trevor abandoning the aircraft rather than completing a normal runway landing; it does not establish an alternative successful landing route. - Gain altitude before leaving the aircraft, as the walkthrough advises.
- If you are pursuing the optional “Four Wheel Flier” objective, exit in the Mesa and then parachute to safety.
In this mission, focus on the escape sequence rather than trying to land the cargo plane on a runway.

Why there is no universal landing button
Control bindings vary with platform and player configuration, so a single keyboard or controller button should not be assumed. Rockstar’s in-game control display is the reliable place to identify the landing-gear control for your setup. The manual confirms that landing gear is controllable but does not provide a complete current button mapping for every PC, PlayStation, and Xbox configuration.
