To fly a plane in GTA 5, manage five functions: throttle to build speed, pitch to raise or lower the nose, roll to bank, yaw to steer the nose, and landing gear for takeoff and landing. First check the aircraft controls shown in your game’s settings; button prompts vary by platform and can be remapped.
Find the plane controls for your platform
Before taking off, open the game’s control settings and locate the bindings for throttle, pitch, roll, yaw, and landing gear. Learn what each command does rather than relying on a button chart that may not match your system or customized layout.
Rockstar’s PC control guide describes rebindable controls, XInput controller support, and mouse flight. A controller is optional: use the input method that lets you reach the necessary commands comfortably. Rockstar’s GTA V game help documents aircraft functions in an Xbox One-era manual, but those prompts should not be treated as a universal current button map.

- Pitch: raises or lowers the nose.
- Roll: banks the aircraft left or right.
- Yaw: turns the nose left or right.
- Landing gear: raises the wheels after takeoff and lowers them for landing.
How to take off
- Build speed. Apply throttle and keep the plane aligned with the runway. Use small yaw corrections if the nose drifts.
- Lift off smoothly. When the aircraft has enough speed to rise, ease the nose upward with pitch. Avoid pulling sharply, which can make the plane climb too abruptly.
- Retract the landing gear. Once airborne, use the landing-gear command to bring the wheels up.
- Set a steady climb. Make gentle pitch and roll adjustments rather than holding a large input. Keep the aircraft pointed where you intend to go.
How to turn without losing control
Use roll to bank into a turn, then make measured pitch and yaw corrections to maintain a controlled path. A large or prolonged input can take the plane farther off course than intended, so ease off as the aircraft reaches the desired heading. Practice at a safe altitude before trying tight turns near obstacles or a runway.

How to land a plane
- Approach the runway. Line up early and descend gradually. Use small roll and yaw adjustments to keep the runway in front of you.
- Reduce speed and altitude steadily. Avoid abrupt changes in pitch or throttle that could make the approach unstable.
- Lower the landing gear. Extend it before touchdown, using the command shown in your controls.
- Touch down and slow down. Keep the plane aligned with the runway, then brake after landing and maintain directional control until it stops.
Build Flying skill with practice
Rockstar’s game help says that increasing the character’s Flying Stat improves the ability to fly aircraft and recommends visiting Pilot School to help improve the stat. It also explains that higher Flying skill makes the character less susceptible to turbulence and supports smoother flight and landings. Practice can therefore make handling more manageable as well as teach the controls.
In Story Mode, a 2026 Gamers.Wiki guide describes Flight School as a 12-lesson course with aircraft supplied for the relevant plane and helicopter exercises. Its lesson sequence includes takeoffs, runway landings, aerobatics, checkpoint flying, helicopter exercises, parachuting, and a final mixed flight. Treat those lesson-specific details as secondary guidance and check the activity in your version of the game. The guide also distinguishes Story Mode Flight School from GTA Online Flight School, so do not assume their lesson counts or requirements are the same.

When keyboard flight feels awkward
On PC, try rebinding the flight commands to keys that are easier to use together, use mouse flight, or connect a compatible XInput controller. No one setup is best for every player; choose one that gives you comfortable access to throttle, pitch, roll, yaw, and landing gear, then confirm the prompts in your own settings.
