A new Grand Theft Auto V PC jetpack experiment makes Rockstar’s modern open-world game feel much closer to Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the PlayStation 2-era favourite that set the standard for jetpack fun. The modification adds a cinematic launch, Iron Man-style flight, a speedometer and selectable weapons, but the reported installation was unstable and appeared to conflict with another mod.
Why San Andreas is still the benchmark
For many players, San Andreas remains the definitive GTA game because its jetpack is simple, immediate and memorable. It is hidden at Verdant Meadows Airstrip, where the player can collect it and take off with a button press. That straightforward design is the comparison point for the GTA 5 experiment described by PC Gamer in an article republished by UK HeadTopics on 15 October 2026.

The newer mod does not merely copy that pickup-and-fly loop. It turns using the jetpack into a small action sequence, with more spectacle and more information on screen.

Cinematic launch and aerial movement
Activating the device triggers a launch animation rather than an instant vertical hop. The character adopts an Iron Man-like pose while airborne, giving the flight a more dramatic presentation than the compact implementation in San Andreas.

Speedometer feedback
A speedometer is displayed during flight. San Andreas offers the jetpack without this kind of dedicated speed readout, so the GTA 5 version provides clearer feedback about movement while flying.
Three weapon choices
The mod reportedly lets the player launch one of three weapons: SMG, plasma or “tube.” The source does not clarify whether “tube” is a distinct weapon or another SMG variant, so that label should be treated as uncertain rather than as a confirmed weapon class.

- Confirm the target build. Check the mod’s documentation against your installed PC version of GTA V. A mismatch is a common reason a game fails before reaching the menu, but the article does not identify the particular mismatch involved in this case.
- Back up first. Copy the game folder and save files so you can restore a clean state if the launcher or game stops starting.
- Install only the stated dependencies. Follow the mod author’s required framework and file locations exactly; do not substitute files from an unrelated mod setup.
- Test the jetpack by itself. Temporarily disable other modifications and launch the game. The reported experiment appeared to activate a street-golfing mod, which suggests that the complete mod stack was not isolated.
- Add other mods one at a time. If the jetpack works alone, re-enable the rest individually and launch after each change. The first failure identifies the likely conflict.
- Revert cleanly after a crash. Remove the last-added files or restore the backup rather than repeatedly launching a damaged installation.
Why launch crashes and conflicts matter
The writer describes repeated crashes while trying to start GTA 5 before eventually getting the game running. That is an individual report, not evidence that every installation will crash. It does show why a modded setup should be treated as a compatibility exercise: the game build, loader, dependencies and other installed scripts can all affect startup.

The unexpected street-golfing behavior is another warning sign. A mod can appear to work while also loading unrelated content, making it difficult to tell which files control a feature. Testing with a minimal setup is therefore more informative than adding several modifications at once.

For players who value a jetpack, the mod closes a specific gap between GTA 5 and San Andreas. GTA 5 supplies more elaborate animation, a speed readout and weapon options, while San Andreas retains the cleaner nostalgia of finding the jetpack at Verdant Meadows Airstrip and taking off immediately. The modification makes GTA 5 feel more like the older favourite, but it does not erase the practical cost of crashes and uncertain compatibility.
