Buying on PC? Choose GTAV Enhanced if your computer meets Rockstar’s current requirements; choose GTAV Legacy only when Enhanced is incompatible or you need Legacy-specific compatibility. On PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, choose the native current-generation release for the improved graphics, performance options and newer GTA Online features. Before paying again, check whether your existing PS4 or digital Xbox One license qualifies for Rockstar’s free upgrade.
The short answer
There are several products called “GTA 5,” but the important differences are the platform generation and, on PC, whether you run Enhanced or Legacy.
- New PC buyer: buy GTAV Enhanced when your system passes the current requirements. Rockstar’s PC listing also includes Legacy for computers below Enhanced’s minimum specification.
- Existing PC owner: Rockstar offered Enhanced at no additional charge, while Legacy remains supported. Install the version your hardware and multiplayer contacts require.
- PS5 or Xbox Series X|S owner: use the native current-generation version for the modern graphics modes and current-generation GTA Online content.
- PS4 or Xbox One owner moving to newer hardware: check the free-upgrade offer first. Eligible PS4 owners and digital Xbox One owners can claim the newer console version under Rockstar’s June 18, 2026 support instructions, but physical Xbox One copies are excluded from that digital upgrade route.
Story Mode is available in every main edition. The biggest practical differences are visual performance, access to newer GTA Online features, upgrade eligibility and what happens to your GTA Online progress and GTA$ when you migrate.

Which PC version should you buy?
Choose Enhanced when your computer qualifies
Enhanced is the default choice for a new PC purchase. It brings the PC version up to the current-generation feature set, including visual and performance improvements and GTA Online features that Rockstar has also made available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It is the version to select if you want the newest PC content path and your hardware can run it reliably.

Do not rely on an old forum specification or a retailer’s abbreviated requirements. Rockstar’s PC requirements page, updated December 10, 2025, states that downloadable content and programming changes can alter requirements. Check the live Enhanced requirements immediately before installing, especially after a major title update or when using a laptop with integrated graphics.
Use Legacy for unsupported hardware or compatibility needs
Legacy is not a demo or a time-limited trial. Rockstar renamed the existing PC version Legacy and said it would continue to be supported. The current PC store listing includes both versions and says Legacy is included for hardware that does not meet Enhanced’s minimum requirements.
Legacy makes sense when Enhanced will not run acceptably, when you need to remain on an older configuration, or when your regular GTA Online group still plays that edition. PC players on different editions should not assume they can join the same session; treat Enhanced and Legacy as separate versions when planning multiplayer.
What happens if you already own GTA 5 on PC?
Rockstar announced Enhanced as a free upgrade for existing PC owners. Sign in to the same Rockstar account and storefront account that owns the game, then look for both install options in the launcher or store library. Keep Legacy installed until you have confirmed that Enhanced launches, your saves are present and your online profile migration is understood.

A free upgrade does not mean every computer can run the new build. Your entitlement may include Enhanced, but the live system requirements still determine whether it is usable. If the launcher offers both versions, selecting Legacy is the practical fallback for a machine below Enhanced’s minimum specification.
Should PS5 or Xbox Series X|S owners buy the native version?
Why the native current-generation release matters
The native PS5 and Series X|S releases are more than a resolution patch. Rockstar’s March 2022 announcement described graphics modes supporting up to 4K resolution and up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, faster loading and 3D audio. Those are published capability ceilings, not a guarantee that every mode runs at its maximum in every display setup.
Rockstar’s later update notes also identify some GTA Online content and Career Progress features as limited to PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced. If you want the current-generation online feature set, run the native edition rather than the PS4 or Xbox One build through backward compatibility.

Rockstar’s June 18, 2026 support instructions cover a free upgrade path for eligible PS4 owners. A PS4 physical owner must keep the disc available because the console uses it to verify ownership. A digital owner should sign in to the PlayStation account that purchased the game and check the store listing for the upgrade entitlement.

Do not buy a second copy before checking the store while signed in to the owning account. Eligibility, regional listings and the exact offer can differ by license type, so the account’s live product page is the final check.
Can you upgrade an Xbox One copy for free?
Digital Xbox One owners can check the described free upgrade to the Series version from the account that owns the game. Rockstar’s support article specifically excludes physical Xbox One copies from obtaining a digital Series edition through that offer. A disc owner should therefore not assume that inserting the Xbox One disc into a Series console creates a free digital entitlement.
If you own the older Xbox version physically, verify the current store and support terms before spending money. The Xbox One edition remains a separate product even when played on newer hardware through backward compatibility.

Choose based on the features you will actually use. If you only play Story Mode and your older console already works, the old edition may be adequate. If you want current GTA Online systems, faster loading or the newest graphics modes, the native current-generation edition is the relevant purchase.

Will your GTA Online progress and GTA$ transfer?
Progress migration is separate from buying the game
Before migrating, confirm which profile you are moving and whether you plan to keep playing on the original version. Rockstar’s migration process can affect where your online profile is active, so do not treat the transfer as a harmless duplicate installation.
Earned and purchased GTA$ follow different rules
Rockstar’s platform-migration guidance distinguishes currency you earned in play from currency you purchased. Earned GTA$ transfers regardless of platform family. Purchased GTA$ transfers only within the same console family. A move between PlayStation and Xbox therefore does not treat purchased currency the same way as a move within the PlayStation or Xbox family.
Important PC Legacy-to-Enhanced warning
Rockstar specifically warns that migrating PC Legacy progress to Enhanced removes unspent GTA$ from the Enhanced balance. Read the current migration screen and support guidance before confirming the transfer, and avoid buying currency immediately before a migration until you understand how that balance will be handled.

Migration rules can be revised, so check Rockstar’s current “Platform Changes and GTA$ Transfers during GTA Online Profile Migration” guidance on the day you move. The rules above explain the published distinction, not a promise that every future platform combination will behave identically.

Is GTA+ required?
No. GTA+ is optional and is not required for Story Mode or ordinary access to GTA Online. Rockstar lists GTA+ support on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced. Membership benefits do not apply on PS4, Xbox One or PC Legacy.
Do not choose an edition solely to obtain GTA+. First choose the version your hardware, friends and migration plans require; consider the subscription only if its current benefits are useful to you on a supported platform.
A safe buying and upgrade process
- Identify the hardware and edition you own. Note whether your license is PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS5 or Series X|S, and whether a console copy is digital or disc-based.
- Check the live platform store while signed in. Look for an “upgrade,” “download” or included-version entitlement before purchasing another copy.
- For PC, verify Enhanced requirements. Use Rockstar’s current requirements page rather than relying on a launch-era specification. If your system falls short, install Legacy.
- Decide whether current-generation GTA Online features matter. If you need features limited to PS5, Series X|S or PC Enhanced, select that edition rather than an older build running through backward compatibility.
- Prepare migration. Read the current migration instructions, check your profile and GTA$ balances, and pay particular attention to the PC Legacy-to-Enhanced unspent-balance warning.
- Install before deleting the old version. Launch the new edition, verify Story Mode saves and GTA Online access, then decide whether the older installation is still needed for friends or compatibility.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Buying twice: Existing PC owners, eligible PS4 owners and digital Xbox One owners may already have an upgrade entitlement. Check the owning account first.
- Assuming backward compatibility equals an upgrade: Running the PS4 or Xbox One build on newer hardware does not provide the native current-generation feature set.
- Ignoring the disc requirement: An eligible physical PS4 owner must keep the disc available for ownership verification.
- Expecting a physical Xbox One disc to unlock a digital Series copy: Rockstar’s described offer excludes that route.
- Installing Enhanced on an underpowered PC: Ownership does not override the system requirements. Use Legacy when the computer does not meet Enhanced’s minimum.
- Spending GTA$ immediately before migrating: Purchased currency has platform-family restrictions, and Rockstar warns about unspent GTA$ during PC Legacy-to-Enhanced migration.
- Expecting GTA+ on an older edition: GTA+ benefits are limited to PS5, Series X|S and PC Enhanced.

The deciding question is not simply “Which GTA 5 is newest?” It is whether your hardware and license qualify for the newer edition, whether you need its current-generation GTA Online features, and whether migration changes the progress or GTA$ you intend to keep.
