Grand Theft Auto IV is the better choice for weighty, physics-led driving and a deeply atmospheric city. Grand Theft Auto V is better if you want tight, forgiving controls, quick mastery, first-person driving, and a larger, brighter sandbox. Neither game wins every category; the right pick depends on whether you value physical consequences or accessibility and variety.
Quick verdict

|---|---|---|
| Heavy, demanding handling | GTA IV | Cars transfer weight noticeably, lean through corners, understeer, and deform more dramatically in crashes. |
| Easy, predictable driving | GTA V | Its controls are tighter and more forgiving, so evasive maneuvers and high-speed turns are easier to learn. |
| Detailed vehicle physics | GTA IV | Drivetrain layouts, suspension behavior, body roll, and crash reactions are more prominent. |
| Perspective options | GTA V | Rockstar officially supports first-person and third-person play, including separate driving and on-foot perspectives. |
| Oppressive, cohesive atmosphere | GTA IV | Liberty City’s grimy streets and physical consequences create a more focused sense of place. |
| Large, bright activity sandbox | GTA V | Los Santos offers broader spaces and a more immediately accessible style. |
How GTA IV’s driving feels
GTA IV’s cars feel heavy because the game makes suspension movement and momentum visible. Large sedans can exhibit “boat-like levels of body roll,” as Traxion’s Ross McGregor described in a December 30, 2024 analysis. Turn in too quickly and the front tires push wide; brake late and the car’s weight continues forward instead of stopping on command. A successful getaway often depends on preparing the car before the corner rather than reacting after it.

Weight transfer is the central skill
GTA IV rewards straight-line braking, then loading the suspension before you turn. Entering every bend at maximum speed is usually slower than braking earlier, settling the chassis, and applying throttle once the car is pointed toward the exit. Lifting off the accelerator mid-corner can also change the balance enough to produce a slide, particularly in cars with different front-, rear-, or all-wheel-drive characteristics.
Different drivetrains matter
Traxion highlights the contrast between the rear-engined, rear-drive Comet and the front-engined, front-drive Blista. They do not simply share one generic handling model with different acceleration figures. Their weight distribution and driven wheels affect how they launch, turn, and recover from a mistake. That variety is a major reason IV’s traffic feels like a collection of machines rather than cosmetic variations.

Crashes have visible consequences
GTA IV combines its RAGE engine with NaturalMotion’s Euphoria technology to create reactive impacts and character movement. Vehicle deformation is more exaggerated than in GTA V: panels crumple, collisions upset the car, and a bad impact can change the next few seconds of a pursuit. The result is slower and less convenient, but it makes speed management meaningful.
How GTA V’s driving differs
GTA V streamlines the same basic idea into a handling model that TechRadar’s Jake Green called “streamlined and arcadey.” The controls are tight, predictable, and easy to master. Cars generally respond quickly to steering and recover from errors more readily, so a new player can chase, escape, or explore without first learning every suspension quirk.
Forgiving does not mean identical
GTA V still gives vehicles different acceleration, braking, traction, and off-road behavior. However, Traxion characterizes its cars as much more forgiving and less detailed in physics and damage than GTA IV. The game prioritizes momentum you can read immediately over a long chain of physical consequences. That makes it a better fit for players who want the mission or activity to remain the focus.

Why it is easier to master
In V, you can often enter a corner faster, correct your line with steering, and continue without a major penalty. Evasive driving in traffic is therefore more accessible, and repeated attempts are less dependent on choosing the correct braking point. The trade-off is that the cars can feel less distinctive when you are looking for nuanced weight transfer or detailed crash behavior.
Physics and damage: which game is more realistic?
If “realistic” means that mass, suspension loading, drivetrain layout, and collisions visibly influence the result, GTA IV has the stronger case. Its body roll, understeer, weight transfer, and deformation are pronounced enough to shape your driving decisions. A heavy sedan asks for a different approach from a compact or sports car, and a crash can leave you fighting an impaired vehicle.
If “realistic” means predictable controls that let a driver perform intended actions without wrestling the simulation, GTA V may feel more believable in ordinary play. Its simplified behavior avoids some of IV’s dramatic lean and keeps the car stable during cinematic chases. That is a design choice, not proof that one game models every real-world variable better.

Which game feels more immersive?
Immersion splits into two different goals. GTA IV creates a cohesive, oppressive Liberty City: dense streets, subdued presentation, and vehicles that physically resist reckless driving. The city’s mood and the handling model reinforce each other. When a pursuit goes wrong, the damage and loss of control feel like part of the world rather than a brief animation.

Its accessibility lets you move between driving, shooting, aircraft, watercraft, and open-world activities with less friction. TechRadar’s January 14, 2026 comparison describes Liberty City as more memorable and oppressive, while Los Santos is brighter and less distinctive. Players who define immersion as freedom, variety, and a wide playable space may therefore prefer V.
Perspective flexibility favors GTA V
Rockstar’s official GTAV perspective guide allows first-person mode for driving while keeping third-person selected for running and gunfights. You can therefore drive from a behind-the-wheel view, then return to a wider camera for on-foot action. GTA IV does not offer that same official first-person driving option, so its immersion comes primarily from atmosphere and physical feedback rather than camera choice.

Driving techniques that matter in GTA IV
- Brake in a straight line. Reduce speed before turn-in instead of asking the tires to brake and steer at the same time.
- Load the suspension. Make a deliberate steering input and let the chassis settle before adding power.
- Read the road surface and traffic. Narrow streets and moving vehicles leave less room for a late correction.
- Use the drivetrain to your advantage. Front-drive cars can pull through some exits; rear-drive cars may rotate more readily when you apply power.
- Expect the crash to continue. After contact, check the car’s direction and damage before immediately accelerating again.
These techniques explain why IV can feel frustrating during the first hours and rewarding later. The game asks you to plan a maneuver instead of relying on an emergency steering correction.
When GTA V is the better driving game
- You are new to the series or want to learn quickly.
- You prefer high-speed chases with fewer failed attempts caused by a single late input.
- You want to switch to first-person driving without committing to first-person combat.
- You value a broad sandbox where driving supports many different activities.
- You play with friends or intermittently and do not want a long adjustment period.
V’s predictable handling also suits players who use a controller casually. The game’s goal is to keep the vehicle responsive while the player concentrates on missions, exploration, or online activities.

When GTA IV is the better driving game
- You want every corner to require speed judgment and preparation.
- You enjoy noticeable suspension movement, understeer, and weight transfer.
- You want vehicle choice to involve more than top speed and appearance.
- You find exaggerated crash deformation and physical reactions immersive.
- You prefer a darker, more unified city atmosphere over a brighter variety-first sandbox.
IV is especially compelling when the driving model itself is the reason you are playing. Its demanding behavior is not an obstacle to overcome and forget; it is one of the game’s defining systems.

Platform, edition, and purchase checks
GTA IV launched in 2008 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and later received Steam and Rockstar Launcher versions. The exact edition and availability can vary by region, so check the marketplace listing for your platform before buying. A PC version may also present different launcher, controller, or compatibility considerations than an original console release.
Rockstar currently lists enhanced editions of GTA V. Confirm whether a store page is selling the current enhanced edition or an older release, and verify the console generation, PC launcher, region, and included content. Prices, stock, and edition names can change; the product page is the authoritative source at the time of purchase.
Mods, patches, and settings can change the feel
This comparison describes the games’ documented baseline behavior, not every community-modified or patched installation. PC mods can alter handling, damage, camera behavior, traffic, or graphics. Controller settings and player experience also affect perceived responsiveness. If two players disagree about which game feels heavier, they may be using different editions, input settings, or modifications.

A practical decision guide
- Choose GTA IV if your first question is, “Which game has more convincing weight and consequences?”
- Choose GTA V if your first question is, “Which game lets me drive confidently right away?”
- Choose GTA IV for a concentrated, grimy city where driving and atmosphere support the same mood.
- Choose GTA V for first-person driving, a brighter open world, and a wider range of activities.
- Check the exact listing before purchase, especially on PC and across console generations.
Rockstar co-studio head Rob Nelson described a later physics approach as combining some of GTA IV’s weight with GTA V’s accessibility, while adding more control over drivetrain, tires, suspension, and steering. That comment illustrates why the two games are best understood as different priorities: IV emphasizes physical character, and V emphasizes approachable control.
Final answer
For driving physics and physical immersion, pick GTA IV. Its body roll, understeer, weight transfer, drivetrain differences, and crash deformation make you manage the car rather than simply point it. For accessible handling, perspective choice, and a broad modern sandbox, pick GTA V. Calling either game universally better misses the central trade-off: GTA IV makes driving demanding and atmospheric, while GTA V makes it fast, flexible, and easy to enjoy.
