Use the GST Portal workflow that matches your taxpayer category and form. Registration starts at Services > Registration > New Registration. Returns are form-specific: GSTR-1, for example, reports outward supplies for applicable normal and casual taxpayers, while specialized taxpayers use different forms. Payments create a challan and, after successful confirmation, credit the Electronic Cash Ledger. For a technical portal failure, record the exact error and raise a ticket with GSTN rather than treating a tax-law question as a helpdesk problem.

This guide explains the documented GSTN routes for registration, return filing, online payment and technical support. Portal labels, available payment modes, deadlines, authentication rules and support details can change, so use the messages and instructions displayed for your account and verify current notifications before acting.

GSTN services at a glance

Task Where to begin What determines the exact steps Evidence or result to retain
New registration GST Portal: Services > Registration > New Registration Entity, applicant type, registration type, identity verification and supporting documents Application reference, uploaded documents and portal status messages
Return filing The return tile for the relevant tax period Taxpayer category, form, monthly or quarterly option, nil-return rule and ledger position Filed return acknowledgement, ARN and ledger entries
Online payment The payment or challan option exposed by the relevant workflow Form, liability shortfall, cash and credit ledgers, and currently enabled payment modes Challan number, bank confirmation and Electronic Cash Ledger credit
Portal problem GSTN helpdesk or the grievance portal Whether the problem is technical or concerns tax interpretation Ticket or acknowledgement number, screenshot and resolution comments

GSTN’s Welcome Kit points taxpayers to its helpmodules for manuals and FAQs covering registration, returns, payment, refunds, appeals, offline tools, input tax credit and ledgers. Those materials explain portal operation; they do not replace the CGST or IGST Acts, rules, notifications, circulars or advice for a particular tax position.

Identify your taxpayer category and form before clicking File

There is no single GST procedure that applies to every registration. Start by identifying the legal status of the business, the registration type, the period being reported and the return assigned to the account. A normal taxpayer, casual taxpayer, composition taxpayer, non-resident taxpayer and an overseas digital-service provider can see different forms, fields and prerequisites.

XKDOUS 2 Pack Invoice Books, 2-Part Carbonless Receipt Books
  • Two-Part Carbonless Invoice Book: Each invoice book has 50 sets of invoices, each with a white/light yellow section, with the yellow section retained in the invoice book to maintain detailed records.
  • Consecutively Numbered: Enlarged red 6-digit numbers in the upper right corner of each invoice receipt book help you quickly navigate through your orders.
  • Wraparound Divider Flap: A thick folded cardboard divider is integrated into the back of each invoice book for use between each two-part sales order to prevent the written content from rubbing off on subsequent copies of the invoice, resulting in wasted invoices.
  • 2 Packs/50 Sets (100 Sets Total): Each invoice book provides 50 sequentially numbered carbonless sets of 2 invoice books for long-term use.
  • Customizable Space: Each invoice book for small business has space at the top to add a company seal or sticker.
  • Category: Confirm whether the account is normal, casual, composition, non-resident or another specialized category.
  • Form: Select the exact return shown for the tax period. GSTR-1 is an outward-supplies statement, not a universal replacement for every GST return.
  • Frequency: Check whether the account is monthly or eligible for a quarterly option.
  • Status: Review prior-period filing status, outstanding liabilities, ledger balances and any portal warnings before starting a new submission.
  • Current notice: Treat dates, rates, exemptions and available payment modes as changeable. Confirm the applicable government notification and the live portal message.

How to apply for GST registration

1. Open a new application

On the GST Portal, go to Services > Registration > New Registration. Select the applicable taxpayer and registration details, then start the application. The normal-taxpayer walkthrough requires business information and authorised-signatory details; the fields shown depend on the choices made at the beginning.

2. Verify contact details

Enter the requested identity and contact information and complete the portal’s OTP verification for the relevant mobile number and email address. Save the temporary reference or application number displayed by the portal so you can resume an incomplete application and check its status.

3. Complete the applicable sections

Work through the form sections for the business, promoters or partners, principal and additional places of business, goods or services, bank details and authorised signatory. Upload readable supporting documents in the format and size accepted by the portal. Requirements vary by entity and registration type; do not assume that a document list for a proprietorship also applies to a company, trust, partnership or casual taxpayer.

Adams Sales Order Book, 2-Part, Carbonless, White/Canary, 4-3/16 x 7-3/16 Inches, 50 Sets per Book (DC4705)
  • QUALITY INVOICES: Adams Order books provide a professional invoice or customer receipt; a great way to create and maintain a professional image for small businesses and service providers
  • 50 TWO-PART CARBONLESS FORMS: Customers get the perforated white top copy; retain the canary and pink copies for your records
  • WRAP-AROUND COVER: Fold the back cover between sets to keep invoices neat and legible
  • ROOM FOR CUSTOMIZATION: A blank space at top leaves room for your company stamp; a big savings over custom-printed forms
  • CONSECUTIVELY NUMBERED: Large 6-digit numbers in the upper right hand corner help you thumb through orders quickly

4. Choose the available authentication route

GSTN’s registration manual describes Aadhaar authentication and related verification paths. An Aadhaar e-Sign filing option is available in some cases, with stated exceptions for companies and limited liability partnerships. Authentication rules and the screens offered to an applicant can change, so follow the route presented for the particular application rather than treating Aadhaar as universally mandatory or universally optional.

5. Handle the casual-taxpayer workflow separately

A casual taxpayer may be asked to enter estimated supplies and net liability and create a challan. GSTN’s guide says an electronic acknowledgement is issued after the advance deposit reaches the Electronic Cash Ledger. This is a category-specific process; it is not a general precondition for every new registration.

6. Submit and monitor the application

Review names, addresses, identity data, document readability and the authorised signatory declaration before final submission through the method offered by the portal. Submission is not approval. Keep the acknowledgement and use the portal’s displayed status and requests for clarification. Do not promise an approval time based solely on a general walkthrough; the authority may seek additional information or verification.

Registration problems that commonly stop an application

  • OTP does not arrive: Check the entered contact details, message blocking and network access, then use the portal’s resend option. Keep the reference number rather than creating multiple applications immediately.
  • Document rejected: Re-scan the document so text and signatures are legible, meet the displayed file limits and upload it in the requested section.
  • Authentication option is missing: Read the eligibility message. Entity type and the portal’s current rules can restrict Aadhaar or e-Sign routes.
  • Status appears unchanged: Record the application number, date and exact status text. If the site itself is failing, escalate as a technical issue with a screenshot; a status that reflects departmental review is not a browser error.

GST returns: why the form controls the answer

GSTR-1: outward supplies for applicable normal and casual taxpayers

GSTN describes GSTR-1 as the monthly or quarterly statement of outward supplies for applicable normal and casual registered taxpayers. Its FAQ lists exemptions for categories such as composition taxpayers and several specialized taxpayer types. Check the account’s assigned obligations before assuming that every registration files GSTR-1.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GSTR-1 must be filed even when there was no business activity in the period, where the form applies. A nil period therefore still requires the taxpayer to open the return, confirm that there are no reportable supplies and submit the nil filing using the portal’s current process.

Monthly and quarterly timing

Filing pattern described by GSTN General pattern Qualification
Monthly GSTR-1 Usually the 11th of the following month Government notifications can extend or alter the date for a particular period.
Quarterly GSTR-1 Usually the 13th after the quarter Applies only where the taxpayer is eligible and enrolled for the quarterly option; confirm the notified deadline.

The dates above are a pattern printed in GSTN material, not a promise for every tax period. Historical examples on an FAQ page should not be copied as the current deadline. Check the live return tile, current notifications and any extension announced for the relevant month or quarter.

E-invoice data and edits

For users of the e-invoice system, invoice data from the Invoice Registration Portal is passed to the GST Portal and auto-populated into specified GSTR-1 tables, including B2B supplies, exports and credit or debit notes. Review every populated record. GSTN says users can edit the details; an edit can clear source or IRN fields. Treat the live form instructions as controlling and reconcile edited values with the original invoice records before filing.

Specialized returns illustrate the different rules

GSTR-5A applies to non-resident Online Information Database Access and Retrieval (OIDAR) service providers. GSTN’s FAQ says it is mandatory even for a nil period, cannot be filed for a current period while the prior period remains unfiled and requires full payment of tax and other liabilities before filing. Those conditions belong to GSTR-5A and its taxpayer category; they must not be generalized to GSTR-1 or to every GST registration.

A return-filing checklist

  1. Confirm the taxpayer category, form and tax period.
  2. Check whether the account is monthly or quarterly and verify the currently notified due date.
  3. Resolve prior-period filing blocks and review notices shown by the portal.
  4. Reconcile sales, exports, business-to-business invoices, credit or debit notes and e-invoice data.
  5. Choose nil filing only after confirming that no reportable activity exists and that the form permits or requires a nil submission.
  6. Review auto-populated values and any edits, then submit using the available verification method.
  7. Download or record the acknowledgement and confirm that the return status changed to filed.

How GST Portal payments work

Create the challan in the right workflow

A GST challan is part of the portal payment process. The exact screen and payment choices depend on the form and the liability being paid. Before creating one, check the taxpayer’s Electronic Cash Ledger, Electronic Credit Ledger and the liability displayed by the return. A challan amount should address the actual shortfall rather than duplicate a balance already credited.

  • Wraparound cover attached to back to place between sets
  • Consecutively numbered within each book

Bank confirmation and the Electronic Cash Ledger

GSTN’s online-payment FAQ describes internet banking through authorised banks as an online payment mode. After successful bank confirmation, the amount is credited to the Electronic Cash Ledger, identified in the portal as GST PMT-05. Starting a bank transaction is not proof of credit: wait for the portal’s transaction status and ledger entry, and retain the challan and bank reference.

GSTR-10 as a form-specific example

The GSTR-10 manual shows a user reviewing the return, proceeding to filing, creating a challan for a liability shortfall, selecting a payment mode shown in that workflow and completing filing through DSC or EVC. For some methods, the manual describes payment status returning to the portal after bank confirmation. This illustrates one form’s sequence; it is not a universal promise that every return exposes the same modes or filing buttons.

When a payment appears stuck

  • Do not immediately pay again. First check the challan status, bank reference and Electronic Cash Ledger.
  • If the bank reports success but the portal has not credited the amount, capture the transaction number, date, amount, bank message and portal status.
  • Use the return’s displayed instructions for reconciliation or recheck. A payment issue with no portal error may require bank or portal support, while a liability dispute is a tax question.
  • File only after the required liability is visible as paid or the form confirms that the remaining amount can be submitted.

How to lodge a useful grievance

  1. Write down the GSTIN or application reference, form name, tax period, browser or app context, date and time.
  2. Copy the exact error message instead of paraphrasing it. Note the last successful step and the action that failed.
  3. Take a screenshot showing the error and relevant page context. Redact passwords, OTPs, bank credentials and unnecessary personal or customer data.
  4. Submit the complaint through the helpdesk or grievance portal and save the ticket or acknowledgement number.
  5. Use that number to track progress and read resolution comments. If a known-issues guide does not address the symptom, GSTN advises raising a new ticket with a proper screenshot.

Separate a system failure from a tax disagreement

A helpdesk can investigate a page that will not load, an OTP that fails, a challan whose bank status does not return or a filing button that produces an error. It cannot decide whether a supply is taxable, whether credit is legally admissible or which classification applies to a complex transaction. For those questions, consult the applicable law and current government material or obtain professional advice, then use technical support only if the portal cannot implement the resulting action.

Practical controls for every filing cycle

Keep a small evidence file

  • Application, ARN or return acknowledgement numbers.
  • Challan numbers, bank references and ledger credit confirmations.
  • Copies of submitted returns and downloaded notices.
  • Clean screenshots of errors with sensitive credentials removed.
  • Ticket numbers and the support responses attached to each issue.

Check the portal, not an old calendar

GSTN tutorial pages may retain historical examples, while government notifications can extend a deadline or alter a requirement. Before submitting, compare the period shown in the portal with the latest notified date and the instructions for that exact form. The same discipline applies to Aadhaar authentication, payment modes, phone hours, language support and any field that has changed after a portal release.

Use offline preparation only when supported

GSTN publishes guidance for offline tools and authorised software for some filing tasks. Use an option only when the relevant form’s current instructions support it, validate the generated file in the portal and review the resulting tables before submission. An upload that succeeds technically still needs a tax and invoice reconciliation.
