To verify an Indian business’s GST registration, use the official GST Portal at gst.gov.in’s Search Taxpayer tool. Enter the supplier’s or customer’s GSTIN/UIN, complete the displayed CAPTCHA and select Search. You can perform this public lookup without signing in. Then compare the returned identifier, legal name, trade name, registration dates, status and address with the business or invoice details.
Why GSTIN verification matters
A GSTIN check confirms what the government’s public GST record says about a registration at the time you look it up. It is useful before onboarding a vendor, paying an invoice, accepting a customer’s GST details or correcting a GST return that contains a wrong identifier.
The GST Network describes the utility as a way to verify GSTIN authenticity, check GSTINs written on handwritten invoices, avoid associating with vendors using fake GSTINs and help suppliers correct reporting errors. Those are verification and reporting controls; a successful search is not a guarantee that a particular supply occurred or that a counterparty is commercially trustworthy.
- For procurement: check that the GST record identifies the supplier you intend to contract with.
- For accounts payable: compare the search result with the invoice before booking tax or making payment.
- For sales: confirm a customer’s details before reporting a business-to-business transaction.
- For compliance reviews: preserve the lookup date and the result details so a later review can distinguish an old status from the current one.
Use the official GST Portal, not a third-party result
The authoritative route for this basic check is the government GST Portal’s Search Taxpayer facility. The portal manual says the public functionality lets you view another registered taxpayer’s profile by entering a GSTIN or UIN, and that the public search does not require login. Open the manual’s documented route at Search Taxpayer and follow the current labels on the live portal.
Third-party accounting applications may offer GST-related workflows, but they are not a substitute for checking the official record when you need to establish what GSTN displays. A software provider can also have its own refresh schedule, coverage or interpretation. For a disputed invoice or onboarding decision, record the result from the official portal itself.
How to check a GSTIN or UIN without logging in
Keep the complete identifier as supplied by the business or printed on the invoice. A single mistyped character can produce no result or a result for a different taxpayer. The public lookup is a short, browser-based procedure:
- Open the GST Portal at gst.gov.in.
- From the home page, open Search Taxpayer.
- Choose the search option for a GSTIN/UIN.
- Enter the GSTIN or UIN exactly as provided. Do not add spaces, punctuation or an invoice number.
- Type the displayed CAPTCHA characters. If they are difficult to read, use the portal’s refresh control to obtain a new CAPTCHA rather than guessing repeatedly.
- Select Search.
- Review the profile returned by the portal and compare it with the business and transaction documents.
The official manual describes this as a public lookup, so signing in is not required for the basic profile. If the portal’s design or wording changes, use the current on-screen label while retaining the same principle: Search Taxpayer, GSTIN/UIN, CAPTCHA and Search.
What the public result can show
The fields displayed can vary with the record and the portal’s current presentation. The Search Taxpayer manual identifies the following profile information, while GSTN’s welcome kit also lists related search details:
| Field | How to use it | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| GSTIN/UIN | Confirm that the identifier returned is exactly the one supplied. | The result verifies the identifier shown in the portal record, not an unverified copy on an invoice. |
| Legal name | Compare it with the contracting entity and formal business documents. | The registration manual says this name is entered as it appears in PAN records. |
| Trade name | Compare it with the storefront, brand or invoice trading name. | It can differ from the legal name and is a separate field. |
| Effective registration date | Check whether the registration date is consistent with the period in which the business claims to have been registered. | Use the date shown for the particular record; do not infer an earlier registration period. |
| Constitution of business | Check whether the entity type shown is consistent with the counterparty’s documents. | The portal displays the registered constitution, not a commercial risk rating. |
| Principal place of business | Compare the address with the supplier’s or customer’s stated location and invoice details. | Differences may reflect branches, changed premises or document errors and require clarification. |
| GSTIN/UIN status | Read the status exactly as displayed before treating the registration as current. | A suspended or cancelled status should not be described simply as active. |
| Cancellation date, when shown | Use it to identify whether the record has a recorded cancellation event. | Its presence and date are record details; they do not by themselves answer every transaction or legal question. |
| Jurisdiction | Use the displayed jurisdiction as an additional identity cross-check. | GSTN’s welcome kit lists jurisdiction among searchable information. |
| Taxpayer type | Compare the taxpayer classification with the counterparty’s explanation. | The value is the classification shown by GSTN for that record. |
| Nature of business activities | Check whether the listed activities are plausible for the supplier or customer. | This is a registration-profile detail, not proof that a particular invoice item was supplied. |
| Return-filing details | Review the available filing table when your due-diligence process requires it. | Only the information presented for that taxpayer and period is established by the lookup. |
GSTN’s Welcome Kit lists status, jurisdiction, taxpayer type, nature of business activities and a return-filing table among the information that can be searched. The portal’s own profile is the controlling display for what is available in a particular search.
How to compare the result with an invoice or business record
Do not stop at “a result appeared.” Perform an identity and date check in a fixed order so that an authentic identifier is not attached to the wrong entity.
1. Match the GSTIN or UIN character for character
Copy the identifier from the result into your internal verification note, or compare it visually with the invoice and master-data record. If the invoice has a different identifier, pause the posting or onboarding workflow until the issuer explains the discrepancy and supplies corrected documentation.

2. Compare legal name with legal name
A legal name and a trade name are not interchangeable. The registration manual explains that the legal name is entered from PAN records, while the profile can show both legal and trade names. An invoice may prominently use a trading brand while the GST profile shows the incorporated, partnership or proprietor name. That difference alone does not prove that the GSTIN is false; compare the invoice’s legal-entity details, address and other returned fields before deciding.
3. Compare the trade name separately
If the invoice uses a shop or brand name, look for that name in the trade-name field rather than expecting it in the legal-name field. If neither field reasonably identifies the counterparty, request clarification and supporting documents.
4. Check the effective date against the transaction period
Use the effective registration date as a time check. A transaction dated before the displayed effective date needs an explanation; do not silently assume that a later registration validates an earlier invoice.
Rank #3
5. Read status and cancellation information exactly
If the portal shows a suspended status, an auto-suspended status or a cancellation date, record the wording and effective date. The Search Taxpayer manual specifically notes that an auto-suspended status and effective date can be displayed. GSTN also lists status and cancellation date as searchable information. These labels should trigger a compliance review, not a casual description of the taxpayer as active.

Use the principal place of business, constitution and nature of business activities as corroborating checks. A mismatch may indicate a data-entry error, a changed business location, a separate registration or a counterparty using another entity’s details. Ask the issuer to resolve the difference before relying on the record.
7. Review return-filing information where relevant
When your policy requires a filing-history check, inspect the return-filing table shown in the profile. Treat it as information displayed for the record and the periods presented; do not turn an incomplete table or an unavailable field into a conclusion about all tax compliance.
What “active,” “suspended” and “cancelled” mean for your decision
The portal’s status is an important signal, but it is not a complete legal opinion about a transaction. If a profile is suspended or cancelled, avoid describing the registration as simply active and escalate the invoice or onboarding decision to the person responsible for tax compliance.
- Active-looking result: continue the identity comparison. A matching search does not prove that the invoice is genuine, the goods or services were supplied, or that the counterparty is trustworthy.
- Suspended or auto-suspended result: capture the exact status and effective date. Ask for current official clarification before treating the supplier as eligible under your process.
- Cancelled result or cancellation date: determine whether the transaction date and the cancellation event affect your intended treatment. The lookup alone does not resolve every legal consequence.
For a transaction with material tax or legal consequences, obtain current official or professional guidance instead of inferring the outcome from a public profile. The GST Portal search confirms the displayed record; it does not replace advice on eligibility, tax credit, invoicing or contractual liability.

The public search is sufficient for a basic GSTIN authenticity and identity check. The GST Portal manual distinguishes it from information that may be available after the user logs in.
| Access route | Information described in official material | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Public Search Taxpayer lookup | GSTIN/UIN, legal name, trade name, effective registration date, constitution of business, principal place of business, status, cancellation date when applicable and return-filing details. GSTN’s welcome kit also lists jurisdiction, taxpayer type and nature of business activities. | Do not assume every field appears for every record or that a public result proves a particular supply or invoice. |
| Logged-in view | The manual says additional information may include proprietor, director or promoter names, e-way bill history, annual aggregate turnover and tax-payment information. | Do not promise that all of these fields are currently displayed to every user; availability can depend on the portal and record. |
| Historical functionality references | A GSTN compilation from January–March 2021 also described additional post-login information such as Aadhaar authentication/e-KYC verification and compliance information. | These historical feature notes should not be treated as a guarantee of the current display for every taxpayer. |
The logged-in route is therefore an optional deeper check, not a requirement for the public GSTIN/UIN search. See the GSTN functionality compilation for the dated historical notes and the current portal manual for the primary workflow.
Troubleshooting a failed or confusing search
No result appears
- Re-enter the identifier from the source document, checking every character and avoiding added spaces.
- Confirm that you selected the GSTIN/UIN search rather than a different taxpayer-search option.
- Refresh and retype the CAPTCHA if it may have been entered incorrectly.
- Ask the issuer to confirm whether it supplied a GSTIN or a UIN and whether the document contains an outdated or transposed identifier.
- If the portal is unavailable, do not treat the outage as proof that the business is unregistered; retry through the official portal later and record the eventual lookup date.
A different business name appears
First compare the invoice’s legal name with the profile’s legal name and its trading name with the profile’s trade name. Then compare the address, constitution and identifier. A brand-versus-legal-name difference can be normal; an unexplained mismatch across several fields requires clarification.
The status is not clearly active
Capture the exact status, including any auto-suspension wording and effective date. Do not flatten a suspended or cancelled record into “registered and active.” Escalate the decision when the transaction, tax credit or contract depends on current registration.

Use only the periods and details actually shown. An absent field is not evidence that no filing occurred, and a displayed filing entry is not proof that every invoice is valid. For a material dispute, use the appropriate official or professional channel.

How to document a verification for your records
A repeatable record makes the check useful when an invoice is reviewed months later, after a status change or during an audit. Your internal note can contain:
- the GSTIN or UIN checked;
- the date and approximate time of the search;
- the legal name and trade name displayed;
- effective registration date and any cancellation date shown;
- status wording, including a suspension or auto-suspension date;
- principal place of business and constitution;
- the invoice number, supplier or customer master record and transaction period being compared;
- the name or role of the employee who performed the check; and
- the reason for any exception, escalation or follow-up request.
Store only the information your organization is entitled and required to retain, and protect internal records containing personal or financial details. A dated note is more useful than a bare “GSTIN verified” tick because it shows which profile was visible for the decision.
What a GSTIN lookup does—and does not—prove
| The lookup can establish | The lookup cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|
| Whether the entered GSTIN/UIN returns a profile on the official GST Portal. | That the invoice was issued by the person who supplied it or that the goods or services were actually delivered. |
| The identity and registration details displayed in that profile. | That every field on a privately supplied invoice is accurate. |
| The status, effective date and cancellation information shown for the record. | Every legal consequence of a suspension or cancellation for a particular transaction. |
| Available return-filing details and other fields presented by the portal. | A guarantee of future status, complete compliance, solvency or counterparty integrity. |
That boundary is important: GSTIN verification is an identity and registration-record control. Pair it with ordinary commercial checks such as contract approval, proof of delivery, bank-account validation and invoice controls when your risk level warrants them.

When to escalate instead of approving the record
Send the case to your tax or compliance owner when any of these conditions apply:
- the GSTIN search returns no profile after careful re-entry;
- the returned legal entity is not the entity named in the contract;
- the invoice uses a different GSTIN from the supplier master record;
- the status is suspended, auto-suspended or cancelled;
- the transaction date conflicts with the effective registration date or cancellation date;
- the principal address, constitution or business activity conflicts with the counterparty’s explanation; or
- the decision affects input-tax credit, a large payment, a disputed supply or a legal filing.
Provide the reviewer with the identifier, the exact portal fields, the lookup date and the document discrepancy. That gives the reviewer a factual record without overstating what the public search proves.
Practical checklist
- Open the official GST Portal and choose Search Taxpayer.
- Select the GSTIN/UIN search, enter the identifier and complete the CAPTCHA.
- Confirm that the returned GSTIN/UIN matches the source document.
- Compare legal name with legal name and trade name with trade name.
- Check effective registration date, status and any cancellation date.
- Compare constitution, principal place of business, jurisdiction, taxpayer type and business activities where shown.
- Review return-filing details when required by your process.
- Record the lookup date and escalate unexplained mismatches or non-active statuses.
For the official field definitions and workflow, consult the GST Portal Search Taxpayer manual. For the broader list of public-search information, consult GSTN’s Welcome Kit. The registration manual’s explanation of legal and trade names is available at Apply for Registration—Normal Taxpayer.
