Use an agent to prioritize GSTIN and invoice discrepancies—not to declare a supplier genuine or fraudulent. A structural or checksum-style flag can identify an entry for review, but current taxpayer details and signed e-invoice evidence are separate checks. The available official guidance does not establish a GSTIN checksum algorithm or define “checksum drift,” so treat that phrase as a proposed anomaly label, not a proven technical test.
What a GSTIN check can—and cannot—establish
A GSTIN format check can catch malformed data. It cannot, by itself, establish that the number belongs to the supplier named on an invoice, that the registration is current, or that a real transaction occurred.
GSTN’s ITC-04 Offline Utility manual explains that the utility can validate GSTIN structure but cannot populate the taxpayer’s name while data is entered offline because it is not connected to the portal. Connectivity-dependent GSTIN validation takes place during upload. This makes a local check useful as an early data-quality control, not as identity verification.

The reviewed official materials do not specify a GSTIN checksum formula, test vectors, or a measured “checksum drift” rate. An organization may use that phrase internally for a mismatch or unexpected change detected by its own controls, but should not present it as a standardized GSTN error category or infer fraud from it. A valid-looking GSTIN is not proof that a vendor is genuine.

How do I find a fake GST invoice?
Check identity, invoice evidence, and the commercial transaction together. The e-invoice portal’s guidance recommends verifying the supplier GSTIN against supplier details, checking required invoice fields, comparing with earlier invoices, and scrutinizing inconsistencies, unusual prices, or urgent payment requests. These are review signals, not automatic proof of fraud.
- Confirm the taxpayer identity: Compare the GSTIN on the invoice with current taxpayer details from an authoritative GST source. Check the legal or trade name and other available details against the supplier master and onboarding records.
- Inspect invoice completeness: GSTN’s Welcome Kit lists details including invoice number and date, supplier and customer GSTINs where registered, place of supply, HSN code, item details, taxable value, tax rates and amounts, reverse-charge status, and supplier signature. Check the fields applicable to the transaction rather than treating a field list as a substitute for current compliance advice.
- Compare against the business record: Match invoice parties, items, quantities, values, and other relevant terms with the purchase order, receipt or service evidence, and prior invoices. Investigate changes that are unexplained or inconsistent with the commercial relationship.
- Verify e-invoice evidence when available: Validate the signed invoice JSON or QR code using an appropriate verification facility, then compare the verified contents with the invoice and purchase records.
- Look for wider risk indicators: The portal’s anti-fraud guidance identifies signals such as shared contact details and a mismatch between declared premises and transaction activity. Treat these as reasons to investigate, not as standalone findings of fraud.
The portal describes fake invoices as including invoices issued without actual delivery or GST payment, and warns that missing mandatory details can also be an issue. An invoice’s matching identifier alone does not establish that goods or services were supplied.

Keep GSTIN validation separate from IRN verification
A GSTIN identifies a registered taxpayer. An Invoice Reference Number (IRN) identifies an e-invoice; it is not a GSTIN checksum and does not independently prove the supplier’s commercial legitimacy.
IRIS IRP describes the IRN as a unique 64-character identifier generated using SHA-256 from the supplier GSTIN, document type, document number, and financial year. The financial year is based on the invoice date and runs from April 1 through March 31. Do not use IRN logic to explain or validate a GSTIN checksum.

IRIS IRP’s tools documentation describes GSTIN-status lookup as well as signed invoice and e-invoice QR verification. The QR may contain supplier and buyer GSTINs, invoice number, date, value, HSN code, IRN, and the IRP digital signature. A successful signature or QR verification supports the integrity of the signed invoice content; it does not verify every underlying commercial fact, such as whether delivery occurred.
IRIS IRP says its GSTIN lookup can return details such as trade name, legal name, address, and PIN code. It also says changes made on the GST Portal may take up to one hour to appear in its lookup. Treat that as the provider’s stated possible delay, not a guaranteed service-level commitment; record the lookup time when using the result in a review.

Choose checks by the question they answer
| Control | What it can establish | What it does not establish | Useful evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local structure or format check | Whether an entered GSTIN conforms to the structural rules implemented by the utility. GSTN says its ITC-04 offline utility performs structure validation. | Current registration details, taxpayer identity, invoice authenticity, or legitimacy of the transaction. | Entered value, check result, utility or rule version, and time of the check. |
| Authoritative taxpayer-detail lookup | Taxpayer details returned by the chosen GST source at the time of lookup, such as name and address where available. | Whether the named business actually supplied the goods or services on the invoice. | Source, lookup time, returned details, and the record against which they were compared. |
| Signed invoice or QR verification | Whether the signed JSON or QR evidence validates and what invoice data it contains. | Whether the underlying delivery or service took place, or whether the transaction is commercially legitimate. | Original signed file or QR, verification result, tool/source, and time. |
| Commercial reconciliation | Whether supplier, invoice, purchase order, and receipt or service records agree on material transaction details. | Whether a matching set of documents is genuine without appropriate independent checks. | Compared records, fields matched or mismatched, reviewer notes, and disposition. |
Design an agent workflow that supports human review
The following is a proposed control design based on the described portal and invoice-verification capabilities. It is not a claim that a particular agent product implements these steps or that the workflow has been independently tested. These controls are operational suggestions, not statutory requirements stated by the cited sources.
- Collect the records: Ingest the supplier master, invoice fields, purchase order, and—when supplied—the original signed e-invoice JSON or QR image. Preserve the original inputs.
- Run deterministic checks first: Check field formats and internal consistency. Flag structural or checksum-style anomalies for review, recording the rule used. Because the authoritative GSTIN checksum method is not established here, do not describe a locally inferred rule as an official GSTN checksum.
- Look up taxpayer details: Query an authoritative GSTIN-status source for available taxpayer details and registration information. Store the source, result, and lookup time so that a reviewer can assess freshness and provenance.
- Verify signed invoice evidence: Where available, validate the signed JSON or QR data. Compare the embedded parties and invoice details with the supplier master, purchase order, and prior invoices.
- Explain each alert: Show the fields that differ, the values compared, and the source supporting each value. Score mismatches as prioritization signals, not as a binary fraud verdict.
- Route material discrepancies to a person: Preserve the source records and tool results, record the reviewer’s disposition, and require authorized human approval for consequential decisions.
Do not let an agent autonomously change bank instructions, approve credit, or reject a supplier solely because of a heuristic mismatch. Before deployment, have compliance and security teams validate access permissions, privacy, retention, audit logging, and the current terms governing GST portal or API access.

What “checksum drift” should mean in an internal control
Until an authoritative technical specification is available, define the phrase narrowly as an alert generated by a documented internal rule—for example, a changed or inconsistent GSTIN value in a supplier or invoice record. Label the finding as an anomaly to investigate, state which fields and records were compared, and avoid implying that a particular GSTIN checksum formula has been officially confirmed.
Keep separate outcomes for malformed structure, a mismatch with current taxpayer details, failed signed-invoice verification, and a commercial-record discrepancy. They require different evidence and remediation. A reviewer should be able to distinguish a data-entry error, stale reference data, an explainable supplier change, and a potentially serious impersonation concern without the agent collapsing them into one fraud score.

The practical fraud indicators are portal guidance, not a substitute for current statutory or tax advice. Portal behavior and rules can change; verify current requirements with the relevant official source and your tax advisers before relying on an operational control.
