How long does a GST refund take? File FORM GST RFD-01 electronically. For refund categories covered by the 2026 mechanism (other than an excess balance in the electronic cash ledger), the proper officer should issue FORM GST RFD-02 (acknowledgement) or FORM GST RFD-03 (deficiency memo) within 10 days. If neither appears, the portal makes the application deemed acknowledged. That starts the processing clock; it does not approve the claim or send money.
After acknowledgement, an eligible low-risk claim for zero-rated supplies or inverted duty structure may receive 90% provisionally. The officer then examines the claim and issues FORM GST RFD-06 for final sanction or rejection. If money is payable, FORM GST RFD-05 starts the payment workflow, but PFMS bank validation, government payment-office processing and bank submission must still finish before credit reaches your account.
The GST refund timeline at a glance
The forms in your GST Portal history show which phase your claim has reached. The 10-day acknowledgement rule applies to the relevant refund categories under the current 2026 mechanism; excess electronic-cash-ledger refunds follow a separate automated path.

The current 10-day target replaces the older 15-day rule for the categories covered by the 2026 mechanism. It should not be used to predict the date on which funds will appear in your bank account.
#1 Best Overall
Step 1: File FORM GST RFD-01 correctly
The timeline starts when you submit the refund application electronically in RFD-01. Upload the statements and supporting material required for the refund category and make sure the bank account specified in the application is the account intended to receive the refund. PFMS uses those account details later, so a mismatch can delay payment even when the tax officer has sanctioned the claim.
Keep the application reference number (ARN), filing date, selected refund category and copies of uploaded documents. Those details let you distinguish a genuinely pending claim from an application that was stopped and replaced after a deficiency memo.
Step 2: Wait for acknowledgement or a deficiency memo
RFD-02 acknowledgement
For covered categories, the proper officer should issue RFD-02 within 10 days of filing when the application passes the initial completeness check. Acknowledgement means the claim is accepted for processing; it is not a final sanction and does not prove that the entire amount will be paid.
RFD-03 deficiency memo
If the application has defects, the officer issues RFD-03 instead. That memo stops the original application. Correct the identified defects and submit a fresh RFD-01. The practical calendar therefore restarts with the new application, including the 10-day acknowledgement check. Once RFD-02 has been issued for an application, a deficiency memo cannot later be issued for that same application.
What deemed acknowledgement means
If 10 days pass without either RFD-02 or RFD-03, the portal makes RFD-02 available as a deemed acknowledgement. The Government of India PIB FAQ dated 9 October 2026 describes this narrowly: “Deemed acknowledgement only means that the refund application is treated as received and complete for the purpose of starting the processing timeline.”
In practical terms, deemed acknowledgement protects the start date of processing when the initial response was not issued on time. It does not create an automatic entitlement, bypass substantive examination, guarantee provisional payment or trigger an immediate bank credit. The officer can still examine eligibility, supporting evidence and the amount claimed.
When a 90% provisional refund can arrive
Low-risk claims for zero-rated supplies and claims arising from an inverted duty structure can qualify for provisional treatment. Under the current FAQ, the system proposes provisional RFD-04 within three working days of acknowledgement, and the provisional amount can be 90% of the claimed amount. This is an accelerated, partial payment path, not the final result.

Risk classification matters. A claim that is not treated as low risk remains with the proper officer for scrutiny rather than receiving the automated provisional route. Even after a provisional amount, the officer must complete final examination and issue RFD-06. The final order can sanction the balance, sanction a different amount or reject the claim according to the examination.
Final sanction, rejection and the 60-day framework
RFD-06 is the final order. It records whether the refund is sanctioned or rejected after the officer reviews the claim. Section 56 of the GST statutory framework links delayed sanction to interest when the refund is not sanctioned within 60 days. The 60-day reference concerns final sanction, not the time required for PFMS and a bank to disburse money after a payment order.
Do not treat the 60-day point as a promise that funds will be in your account on day 60. It is a statutory timing framework for the final decision and any applicable interest consequences. The exact outcome still depends on the category, whether a fresh filing was required, the examination and the payment-stage validation.
Why RFD-05 does not always mean money has arrived
When a sanctioned refund is payable, the officer issues RFD-05. It is a payment order, not evidence that the bank has completed the credit. PFMS validates the bank account after RFD-01 and validates it again after RFD-05. The GST Portal advisory states: “A tax officer can issue payment order only after PFMS has validated the bank account mentioned in the refund application (RFD-01).”
After the second validation, government payment-office steps (DDO/PAO processing) and submission to the bank precede final disbursal. Official guidance does not promise a universal number of days between RFD-05 and bank credit because that interval depends on these operational steps.
Rank #4
Common bank-related blockage
An incorrect account number, IFSC, account-holder detail or other validation mismatch can stop PFMS. The account must be corrected in the manner permitted by the portal, and RFD-05 may need to be reissued after the corrected details pass validation. Until that happens, a claim can appear sanctioned while payment remains pending.

| Claim situation | Acknowledgement rule | Provisional 90% possibility | Main delay risk | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zero-rated supplies | RFD-02 or RFD-03 within 10 days; deemed acknowledgement if neither is issued | Possible when classified low risk | Deficiency refiling or officer scrutiny | RFD-04 proposal within three working days of acknowledgement when eligible; RFD-06 still required |
| Inverted duty structure | Same 10-day mechanism for covered claims | Possible when classified low risk | Risk classification and substantive examination | Final order and any balance after provisional payment |
| Excess electronic-cash-ledger balance | Separate automated treatment | Not the RFD-04 low-risk route described for zero-rated or inverted-duty claims | System processing rather than tax-officer intervention | The 2026 FAQ describes this category as fully automated |
| Any category requiring RFD-03 | Original application stops | Not until a corrected fresh application is acknowledged and otherwise qualifies | Calendar restarts on fresh RFD-01 | Use the new ARN when tracking |

How to check your exact status
- Sign in to the GST Portal and open Services > Refunds > Track Application Status.
- Search using the filing year or the ARN. Open the application that matches the claim you filed; do not rely on an older ARN if RFD-03 required refiling.
- Read the displayed stage and form number. RFD-02 indicates acknowledgement, RFD-03 indicates that the application stopped for defects, RFD-04 indicates the provisional stage, RFD-06 indicates the final order and RFD-05 indicates that a payment order was issued.
- For bank validation and disbursal, use the PFMS GST tracker with your GSTIN or account number. Compare the account details shown there with the details in RFD-01.
- Save screenshots or downloaded records showing the ARN, form, date and status. They provide a dated sequence if the portal and bank show different stages.
What to do when the refund appears stuck
No RFD-02 or RFD-03 after 10 days
Check whether the claim falls within the categories covered by the 2026 10-day mechanism and verify the filing date and ARN. If the period has expired without either form, look for the portal-generated deemed RFD-02. Treat it as the start of processing, not as a sanction.
RFD-03 is displayed
Read every defect in the memo, correct the underlying data or documents and file a fresh RFD-01. Track the new ARN. Continuing to wait on the old ARN will not advance the stopped application.
RFD-04 is not proposed
Confirm that the claim is for zero-rated supplies or inverted duty structure and that it has been treated as low risk. Claims outside that classification remain subject to officer scrutiny and do not receive the automated 90% proposal.
RFD-06 is issued but the bank has not been credited
Check whether RFD-05 exists, then check PFMS validation using the GSTIN or account number. If validation failed, resolve the account discrepancy and follow the portal process for corrected details and reissue of RFD-05. If validation succeeded, the remaining wait is the DDO/PAO and bank-submission workflow; no official universal interval is specified for that final step.
More than 60 days have passed without final sanction
Use the acknowledgement or deemed-acknowledgement date and the RFD-06 status to establish whether the statutory 60-day framework has elapsed. The framework links delayed sanction to interest under section 56. Keep the dated application and status records when seeking an explanation from the proper authority.
Quick Recap
Key distinctions that prevent mistaken expectations
- Acknowledgement is not approval: RFD-02 or deemed acknowledgement only moves the claim into processing.
- Provisional is not final: A 90% RFD-04 payment, when available, is followed by final scrutiny and RFD-06.
- Payment order is not bank credit: RFD-05 must be followed by PFMS validation and government and bank processing.
- A deficiency memo is a reset: A fresh RFD-01 creates the operative timeline after defects are corrected.
- Category changes the route: Excess electronic-cash-ledger refunds are described as fully automated, while other categories use the acknowledgement, scrutiny and payment sequence.
