Neither is universally better. Grok Voice 3.0 is the more compelling candidate when an agent needs an advertised sub-second, full-duplex feel, 25-plus-language coverage, built-in search and orchestration, or xAI’s published speech benchmarks. OpenAI’s Realtime API is the safer fit when you need a mature, explicitly documented session surface, WebRTC or SIP connectivity, detailed interruption controls, and a lower-priced mini tier.
The pricing and benchmark claims are not directly comparable: xAI quotes minutes, while OpenAI quotes audio tokens, and the published test scores come from different evaluations. A short pilot using your real call lengths, speaking ratio, retained context, and tool calls is the only reliable way to choose.
What is being compared?
Grok Voice 3.0 is xAI’s announced speech-to-speech model. The associated xAI Voice API is positioned for realtime voice agents that can listen and speak at the same time, reason over a task, search for information, call tools, manage a session, handle interruptions, and stream audio. xAI advertises support for more than 25 languages, expressive voices, custom voice support, and multiple audio formats.

These are not simply two interchangeable model names. Grok’s proposition emphasizes an agent that can reason, search, and orchestrate actions inside a full-duplex voice experience. OpenAI’s proposition emphasizes a controllable realtime protocol with documented events and deployment transports. Your architecture, rather than a headline benchmark, determines which difference matters.

Latency and the feeling of a natural conversation
What xAI is promising
Full duplex means the system can receive audio while it is speaking instead of forcing every exchange into a rigid listen-then-answer sequence. That design can make an agent feel more like a person on a phone call: the user can begin speaking, the system can detect the barge-in, and the current response can be stopped or adapted. xAI advertises sub-second behavior for Voice 3.0, but the announcement does not establish a single standardized time-to-first-audio number under a stated network, codec, prompt, and tool workload.
xAI also claims that Grok Voice 3.0 has 40% lower latency than GPT-Live-1 (Astra). This is a vendor-reported comparison, not an independent test against the current OpenAI Realtime model. Treat it as a hypothesis to verify with your own calls, not as a guaranteed production advantage.

What OpenAI documents
OpenAI Realtime provides native streaming audio input and output and lets an application configure the session and audio behavior. In practice, perceived latency depends on more than model generation: microphone capture, voice activity detection, endpointing, network transport, audio buffering, tool execution, and time spent synthesizing the first audio frame all contribute.
For a fair comparison, measure at least two latency points:
- Time to first audio: the interval from the end of the user’s speech (or the point at which you submit a turn) to the first audible response frame.
- End-of-turn delay: the interval between the user stopping and the agent deciding that the turn is complete.
Also record the 50th and 95th percentile, not only an average. A model that is quick most of the time but stalls during tool calls may feel worse than a slightly slower model with predictable tails.
Interruptions, barge-in, and turn-taking
Grok Voice 3.0
xAI advertises interruption handling, barge-in support, and natural turn-taking as part of the Voice API. Those features target the most visible failure of voice agents: continuing to talk after the caller has changed direction. During a pilot, test interruptions at different moments—during the first sentence, while a long answer is playing, and immediately before a tool result arrives. Record whether the agent stops promptly, preserves the user’s new intent, and avoids repeating text that was already spoken.

OpenAI Realtime
OpenAI documents VAD-related behavior, response cancellation, and output-audio interruption over WebRTC and SIP. This gives developers explicit controls for deciding when a turn starts and ends and for cancelling an in-progress response. The application still has to configure those controls correctly: aggressive endpointing can cut users off, while a long silence threshold makes the agent feel sluggish.
When comparing the two systems, distinguish detecting an interruption from recovering from one. Detection is the audio and VAD problem. Recovery includes cancelling the response, retaining the user’s new words, preventing duplicate tool calls, and resuming the conversation with the right state.
Reasoning, search, and tool calls
Grok’s integrated agent pitch
xAI presents Voice 3.0 as more than a speech layer. Built-in reasoning, search, tool calling, and orchestration of multi-step workflows are advertised as part of the agent experience. That can reduce the amount of glue code needed for an assistant that must look up information, make a decision, and then take an action while maintaining a spoken conversation.
The trade-off is that integrated orchestration can hide decisions you may otherwise want to control yourself. Before production, verify how the API exposes tool schemas, confirmation steps, retries, parallel calls, timeouts, and partial failures. A fluent voice response is not evidence that the underlying action was completed correctly.

OpenAI Realtime documents tool choice, function and MCP tool configuration, conversation items, response control, and cancellation. This is useful when your application needs to decide exactly which tools are available in a session, when a tool may run, and how to cancel or replace a response after a user interruption.
For transactional agents—such as appointment changes or account actions—explicit control can be more important than a built-in search path. You can require a confirmation turn, validate tool arguments on your server, and keep the authoritative state outside the model. The Realtime API does not remove those responsibilities; it gives you documented events with which to implement them.
What to measure
- Whether the model selects the correct tool for each scenario.
- Whether required arguments are complete and correctly typed.
- Whether a barge-in cancels an obsolete call instead of creating a duplicate.
- Whether the spoken response accurately reflects the tool’s returned status.
- How the agent behaves when a tool times out, returns an error, or produces an ambiguous result.
Transport and deployment choices
xAI transport
xAI documents a realtime WebSocket interface and states compatibility with the OpenAI Realtime API specification. It also identifies an official LiveKit plugin. Compatibility can make an existing event-driven client easier to adapt, but it should not be treated as a drop-in guarantee: authentication, model identifiers, event ordering, error codes, limits, and optional fields still need to be tested.

OpenAI transport
OpenAI explicitly documents WebRTC and SIP in addition to WebSocket-style client events. WebRTC is generally attractive for browser or app clients that need low-latency media handling. SIP matters when the agent must connect to telephony infrastructure using established call-control systems. The choice of transport affects firewall rules, media termination, observability, and where you implement interruption logic.
Build a thin media-and-session adapter around whichever API you select. Keep business tools, authentication, logging, and conversation state behind that adapter. Doing so limits the cost of switching models when availability, pricing, or limits change.
Languages, voices, and audio formats
xAI advertises more than 25 languages, expressive voices, custom voice support, and multiple audio formats. If your service serves multilingual callers, confirm the exact language list, pronunciation quality, voice availability, and any regional or account restrictions before committing. A language count does not tell you whether names, addresses, dates, or code-switching are pronounced correctly.
OpenAI documents selectable voices and audio formats. The cited material does not provide an equivalent 25-plus-language claim, so do not infer parity or infer a limitation from that omission. Test the languages your customers actually use, including accented speech, noisy environments, and conversations that switch languages mid-call.
Voice quality also includes consistency. Evaluate pronunciation of product names, numbers, currency, confirmations, and spelling. For regulated or high-risk workflows, provide a way to repeat critical values and expose a text transcript to the operator or caller where appropriate.
What the published benchmarks do—and do not—show
| Published result | Source and date | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Speech-to-Speech Index: 86.9 | Artificial Analysis, reported in xAI’s October 14, 2026 announcement | A vendor-reported speech benchmark for Grok Voice 3.0; the cited material does not establish a matched OpenAI result under the same test. |
| Full Duplex Bench: 97% | Artificial Analysis, reported in xAI’s October 14, 2026 announcement | Evidence supporting xAI’s full-duplex claim, but not a controlled head-to-head comparison with the current OpenAI model. |
| Big Bench Audio accuracy: 82.8% | OpenAI, August 28, 2025 announcement | An OpenAI-reported audio accuracy result from a different release and methodology. |
The scores cannot be ranked as if they were points on one leaderboard. They come from different announcements, dates, test names, and published methodologies. No independent, apples-to-apples test of Grok Voice 3.0 against the current OpenAI Realtime model is established here. Use the figures as directional evidence about what each vendor emphasizes, then run the same scenarios through both systems.
Pricing: minutes versus tokens
| Offering | Published price | Billing unit and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| xAI Voice 3.0 announcement | $0.08 per minute ($4.80 per hour) | Per-minute figure stated in xAI’s 2026 announcement. |
| xAI Voice API product page | Starting at $0.05 per minute | Starting price shown on the product page accessed in 2026; reconcile it with current pricing documentation before budgeting. |
| OpenAI gpt-realtime-2.1 | $32 per 1 million audio input tokens; $64 per 1 million audio output tokens | OpenAI pricing page, accessed in 2026. |
| OpenAI gpt-realtime-2.1-mini | $10 per 1 million audio input tokens; $20 per 1 million audio output tokens | OpenAI pricing page, accessed in 2026. |
The xAI figures are not two prices that can be averaged. One is an announcement quote of $0.08 per minute; the product page says pricing starts at $0.05 per minute. Confirm which model, region, account tier, and effective date apply to your account.

OpenAI’s Realtime billing accrues across input and output audio, text, and image tokens. Conversation history can make later turns more expensive because retained context is sent again. A short call with many turns, a long system prompt, or image and tool content can therefore cost more than a simple minute-based estimate suggests.
To compare effective cost, collect these variables from a representative sample:
- Total call duration and the percentage of time the user and agent are speaking.
- Number of turns and average length of retained conversation history.
- Input and output audio tokens, plus text or image tokens where applicable.
- Number of tool calls, their latency, and any retries or failed attempts.
- Whether the model is interrupted before finishing an output.
Then calculate cost per resolved interaction, not just cost per minute or cost per million tokens. Include unsuccessful calls, transfers, retries, and the infrastructure required to keep sessions alive.
Which platform fits which requirement?
| If your top requirement is… | Initial lean | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A highly natural full-duplex conversation and advertised sub-second response | Grok Voice 3.0 | xAI explicitly advertises full duplex, sub-second behavior, barge-in, and natural turn-taking. |
| More than 25 advertised languages, expressive voices, or custom voices | Grok Voice 3.0 | Those capabilities are part of xAI’s stated Voice API positioning. |
| Search and multi-step orchestration built into the voice-agent proposition | Grok Voice 3.0 | xAI advertises built-in reasoning, search, tool calling, and orchestration. |
| WebRTC or SIP connectivity with detailed session controls | OpenAI Realtime API | Those transports and controls are explicitly documented. |
| Fine-grained VAD, response cancellation, and output interruption | OpenAI Realtime API | The API documents these behaviors and the related session events. |
| A lower-priced realtime model tier | OpenAI Realtime API | gpt-realtime-2.1-mini is listed at lower audio-token rates than gpt-realtime-2.1. |
| OpenAI ecosystem familiarity or an existing Realtime client | OpenAI Realtime API | Using the same documented session model can reduce adaptation work. |
This is a starting point, not a universal ranking. A telephony contact center may value SIP and predictable cancellation more than a benchmark score. A multilingual assistant may value verified pronunciation in its target markets more than a headline language count. A research assistant may value search and orchestration, while a regulated workflow may prioritize explicit server-side tool approval.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to run a fair pilot
- Freeze the scenarios. Write the same scripted and unscripted tasks for both systems: information lookup, a multi-step tool workflow, a correction after an interruption, a failed tool call, and a transfer or escalation.
- Use the same media conditions. Keep codec, sample rate, network region, microphone, background-noise recordings, and client hardware constant. Test WebSocket, WebRTC, or SIP separately rather than mixing transport effects into model results.
- Use equivalent instructions and tools. Give each model the same system goals, tool schemas, validation rules, and authorization boundaries. Log every tool request and result.
- Measure responsiveness. Record time to first audio, end-of-turn delay, interruption detection time, cancellation completion, and 50th/95th-percentile latency.
- Stress barge-in. Interrupt during opening phrases, long explanations, tool waits, and confirmations. Score whether the agent stops, understands the new request, and avoids duplicate actions.
- Score task completion. Measure whether the requested outcome was achieved, whether the spoken summary matched the actual tool result, and whether a human had to repair the interaction.
- Evaluate speech and transcription. Use names, numbers, addresses, accents, code-switching, and background noise from your real audience. Track transcription errors separately from reasoning errors.
- Calculate effective cost. For each completed and failed interaction, record duration, speaking ratio, turns, retained context, audio and text usage, tool calls, retries, and transfer costs. Compare cost per resolved interaction.
- Test recovery. Disconnect the tool, delay a response, expire a session, and drop the network. Verify that the agent communicates the failure, preserves safe state, and lets the user retry or escalate.
- Review the logs with operators. A dashboard can show latency while an operator identifies awkward confirmations, unsafe assumptions, or moments when callers would hang up.
Can Grok Voice 3.0 replace OpenAI Realtime?
It may be able to replace it at the product level, but “compatible with the OpenAI Realtime API specification” is not proof of behavioral equivalence. Treat compatibility as an opportunity to reuse parts of a client, not as a promise that every event and edge case will behave identically.
Before switching, verify:
- Authentication and endpoint configuration.
- Model names, account access, quotas, and regional availability.
- Session and event schemas, including audio formats and turn-detection fields.
- Tool declaration syntax, argument validation, retries, and cancellation behavior.
- Voice identifiers, language support, custom-voice requirements, and pronunciation quality.
- Maximum session length, retained-context behavior, error codes, and reconnect semantics.
- Logging, data handling, and any contractual requirements for recordings or transcripts.
Keep a provider-neutral test suite so a model change is a measured migration rather than a rewrite driven by marketing claims.
Common comparison mistakes
Putting unlike benchmark scores on one scale
A Speech-to-Speech Index, a Full Duplex Bench result, and Big Bench Audio accuracy measure different things. Report each score with its source and date, and do not calculate a winner from them.

Converting token prices into a guessed per-minute rate
Audio token counts vary with speaking time, turn boundaries, retained history, and output length. Measure your own calls before translating OpenAI’s rates into a per-minute estimate.
Assuming full duplex eliminates all interruption problems
Full-duplex media does not guarantee correct cancellation, state management, or tool safety. Test barge-in while actions are pending.
Ignoring the xAI pricing discrepancy
The 2026 announcement says $0.08 per minute, while the product page accessed in 2026 says pricing starts at $0.05 per minute. Confirm the applicable current rate and model before signing a budget.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choosing by language count alone
Count, voice selection, pronunciation, accents, and code-switching performance are separate questions. Evaluate representative recordings from your customers.
Forgetting retained context
On token-billed sessions, later turns can become more expensive as conversation history grows. Trim or summarize context where your safety and quality requirements allow it, and include that policy in your cost test.
Verdict
Choose Grok Voice 3.0 when the central product requirement is an expressive, full-duplex agent with advertised sub-second behavior, broad multilingual coverage, and integrated search or orchestration. Choose OpenAI Realtime when your priority is a documented and controllable session protocol, WebRTC or SIP deployment, explicit interruption and cancellation behavior, existing ecosystem familiarity, or a lower-cost mini model.
Neither claim is established as the universal winner. The published benchmark figures are not head-to-head, and the billing units differ. A controlled pilot that measures latency, barge-in success, task completion, tool reliability, transcription quality, recovery, and cost per resolved interaction should decide the deployment.
