If you use Grok Voice 3.0 and want the least possible reuse of your conversations, change more than one setting. Turn off the training or model-improvement control, disable personalization separately, consider Private Chat for sensitive sessions, protect your X posts if applicable, and delete old history. These controls do different jobs, and deletion is normally a process that can take up to 30 days rather than an instant wipe.
The exact menu depends on whether you use Grok on X, the Grok mobile app, or Grok.com. The steps below use the labels documented by X and SpaceXSI/xAI in October 2026.
What to change first
For maximum practical privacy, use this order:
- Disable Data Sharing or Improve the model so your interactions, inputs, and results are not used for ordinary training or fine-tuning.
- Disable Grok Personalization or Personalize Grok using X. This is a separate permission and can remain active even when model improvement is off.
- Use Private Chat for conversations intended to be excluded from model training, where the feature is available.
- Delete existing conversation history through the platform’s data controls.
- If you use Grok on X, protect your posts when you do not want public posts used for Grok training or surfaced in Grok responses.
These actions reduce reuse, but they do not create an absolute no-retention guarantee. Feedback you voluntarily submit can still be used for training, and safety, security, legal, de-identification, and pseudonymization exceptions can affect deletion.

Training or model improvement
The training control governs whether your conversations and related inputs and outputs may be used to train or fine-tune Grok models. X describes the opt-out as covering personal data about your interactions with, inputs to, and results from Grok. On the standalone mobile and web products, the equivalent switch is labelled Improve the model or Improve the Model.

Personalization
Personalization controls whether Grok or X can use available account information and activity to tailor responses or your experience. It is not automatically disabled when training is disabled. If your goal is minimum reuse of conversation data, switch off both controls.

Menu wording can change with app and site releases. If a label is not visible, look under the product’s Data, Data Controls, or Privacy area rather than assuming the control has been removed.
How to lock down Grok on X
- Open X and go to Settings and privacy.
- Choose Privacy & Safety.
- Open Data sharing and personalization, then Grok & Third-party Collaborators.
- Turn off Data Sharing. The associated description says that public data and your interactions, inputs, and results with Grok and xAI may otherwise be used for training and fine-tuning.
- In the same area, open Grok Personalization and turn off Allow X to personalize your experience with Grok.
- To remove existing chats, return to Privacy & Safety → Data sharing and personalization → Grok and choose Delete Conversation History.
Protect X posts separately
Conversation controls do not automatically make your X posts private. Go to Settings and privacy → Privacy & Safety → Audience and tagging, then enable Protect your posts if you do not want public posts used to train the underlying Grok or xAI models or surfaced in Grok responses. This changes the audience for your posts; it is a separate lever from the Grok conversation switch.

What the X opt-out still permits
X says you can continue using Grok after opting out. The opt-out does not promise that every deployed feature powered by Grok stops learning from normal use. Voluntary thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback may also be used for training after you opt out. Do not treat the switch as permission to share secrets: X explicitly advises against sending personal, sensitive, or confidential information to Grok.
How to lock down Grok on mobile
- Open the Grok app and enter Settings.
- Open Data Controls.
- Switch off Improve the model.
- In the same data controls, switch off Personalize Grok using X if you do not want X data used to personalize the service.
- Use Private Chat before starting a conversation that you want excluded from model training, if the option is available in your account.
- Use the app’s history or data controls to delete an individual chat, all conversations, or the account, depending on what you intend to remove.
Turning off microphone access in your phone’s operating-system permissions can stop future audio capture, but it does not replace the Improve the model, personalization, Private Chat, or deletion controls. Those settings govern how data already sent to Grok is handled.
How to lock down Grok.com
- Sign in at Grok.com and open Settings.
- Choose Data.
- Switch off Improve the Model.
- Switch off Personalize Grok using X if you do not want X information used for personalization.
- Select Private Chat for a session that should not be used for model training, where the feature is offered.
- Use the available history and data controls to delete individual chats, all conversations, or the account.
Why voice conversations need extra care
Voice is not merely a temporary microphone signal. X says voice input may be transcribed or translated and shared with xAI for personalization. The SpaceXSI privacy policy treats audio and voice as user content. A voice session can therefore create audio-related content, a transcript or translation, and the surrounding prompts and results.

For the smallest practical data trail, avoid speaking personal or confidential information, disable both training and personalization, and use Private Chat for sensitive sessions. Check the transcription shown in the conversation before sending a thumbs-up or thumbs-down: feedback is a separate voluntary submission and can remain eligible for training even after opting out.
Deletion is not instantaneous erasure
What the 30-day window means
X states that deleted conversation history is removed from its systems within 30 days unless it must be retained for security or legal reasons. SpaceXSI/xAI gives a similar general period for deleted or Private Chat conversations.
Why a deleted chat may remain in limited form
The SpaceXSI policy says content can be retained when it has been de-identified or pseudonymized and disassociated, or when safety, security, or legal obligations require preservation. Those exceptions mean deleting a chat removes it through the documented deletion process but does not guarantee immediate destruction of every backup, security record, or legally preserved copy.

What to delete
- Delete individual chats when only one conversation is problematic.
- Delete all conversation history when you want a broad cleanup.
- Delete the account only when you also intend to stop using the service and accept the consequences for account access and associated data.
After requesting deletion, do not continue treating the old conversation as instantly erased during the stated window. Avoid submitting the same sensitive material again, including through feedback.

The SpaceXSI/xAI Consumer FAQ states that, where available, content and interactions in Private Chat are not used for model training. Choose it before entering the sensitive prompt; moving a conversation into a private mode after the fact may not retroactively change how earlier data was handled.

Feedback and deployed-model exceptions
Thumbs-up, thumbs-down, written comments, and similar feedback are intentional additional submissions. X and SpaceXSI both state that feedback supplied after opting out may still be used for training. If a voice response contains sensitive material, avoid rating it unless you are comfortable with that feedback being reviewed or used under the applicable policy.
Opting out also does not mean every feature running on the platform is isolated from learning based on ordinary use. X says deployed features powered by Grok can learn from normal use. This is a reason to minimize sensitive inputs even after all available switches are off.
A practical privacy checklist
- On X: disable Data Sharing, disable Grok Personalization, consider Protect your posts, and delete conversation history.
- On mobile: disable Improve the model and Personalize Grok using X, then use Private Chat for sensitive sessions.
- On Grok.com: disable Improve the Model and Personalize Grok using X, then use Private Chat where available.
- Everywhere: avoid personal, sensitive, or confidential information; remember that voice may be transcribed or translated.
- When deleting: allow up to 30 days and account for security, safety, legal, de-identification, and pseudonymization exceptions.
- When giving feedback: assume the submission may remain eligible for training even after opting out.
What these settings can and cannot guarantee
These controls can stop ordinary training use, reduce personalization, isolate eligible Private Chat sessions from model training, restrict public X posts, and start deletion of stored history. They cannot guarantee that a voice signal was never transcribed, that every copy disappears immediately, that legally retained or de-identified records are destroyed, or that voluntary feedback and every deployed Grok feature are excluded.
