You can create a clip with Grok Imagine and then upscale it separately with Video2X, an open-source project with a free Google Colab option. The two steps are independent: xAI’s official material does not establish that video generation is free for every Grok account, while Video2X’s free route depends on available resources and session limits.
Can you create Grok Imagine videos for free?
Not necessarily. xAI’s Grok Imagine page presents image and video generation, but the official information reviewed does not confirm an unconditional free tier, a quota, or availability for every account or region. Open Grok Imagine in your current app or web experience while signed in and check what video options your account actually offers. Treat any displayed access limits or eligibility terms as account-specific and subject to change.
The API is a separate route from the consumer app. xAI’s Video Generation documentation describes API capabilities; its specifications do not prove that consumer-app generation is free or that the app exposes the same controls.

Choose how to make the clip
Text-to-video
Use text-to-video when you want to describe a scene and have the model create the clip from that description. For the API, xAI documents durations from 1 to 15 seconds and resolutions of 480p, 720p, and 1080p for grok-imagine-video-1.5 text-to-video generation. These are API specifications, not confirmed consumer-app settings.

Image-to-video
Use image-to-video when you have a still image to serve as the starting point. Describe the motion or change you want to see, rather than simply repeating what is already visible in the image. The API documentation lists the same 1-to-15-second duration range and up to 1080p for this mode on grok-imagine-video-1.5.
Reference-to-video
If you use the API’s reference-to-video mode, note its documented maximum of 720p. The 1080p figure for text-to-video and image-to-video should not be generalized to every generation mode.

Generate, retrieve, and save the clip
- Check account access. Open Grok Imagine in the current Grok app or web experience and verify whether video generation is available to your signed-in account and what limits are shown.
- Choose the input mode. Select text-to-video for a prompt-only clip or image-to-video to animate a still. In the API workflow, provide the prompt and, for image-to-video, the starting image as described in xAI’s generation guide.
- Set the framing and duration. Choose landscape, portrait, or square framing to suit where you intend to use the clip. The API supports aspect-ratio controls and documents durations of 1–15 seconds; the app may offer different options.
- Generate and review. For API requests, submit the generation request, poll its request ID until it is ready, then retrieve the result. This is an asynchronous workflow rather than an immediate file response.
- Download the API result promptly. xAI says generated-video URLs are temporary. Save the file before relying on the link for later editing or upscaling.
Upscale the saved video with Video2X
Video2X is a separate open-source project for machine-learning video super-resolution and frame interpolation. Its project repository documents local installation options and use through Google Colab. The Colab route can be an option if your computer lacks a suitable GPU, but processing depends on available resources and free-session constraints; the repository cautions against excessive repeated sessions.

- Save the generated clip as a local video file, especially if it came from the API.
- Choose a Video2X installation or Colab workflow from the project’s current documentation, then follow its setup and input instructions.
- Run the video through the selected super-resolution workflow and save the processed output as a separate file so you retain the original.
- Play the result at the size and on the platform where you plan to use it. Check faces, text, edges, and motion for artifacts or invented detail.
Upscaling increases pixel dimensions; it does not restore information that was never present or guarantee that generated details become accurate. Frame interpolation is a distinct Video2X capability and is not required just to increase resolution.

When to edit instead of upscale
Use editing when the goal is to change what happens in an existing clip, such as requesting a content alteration with a prompt. xAI documents that capability separately in its Video Editing documentation. The edit endpoint retains the source video’s duration and aspect ratio, does not accept custom resolution, and caps output at 720p. It is not a resolution upscaler; use a separate super-resolution workflow when your goal is larger pixel dimensions.
