Grid-level storage is a system connected to the electricity grid that stores electricity and later returns it or provides another grid service. Also called grid-scale or utility-scale energy storage, it describes a role and deployment scale—not one particular technology. A grid-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) is one example, alongside pumped-storage hydropower and other storage types.

What grid-level storage means

A grid-level storage system takes in electricity, holds it in a physical or chemical form, and releases it later. It can charge from the grid or a generator, then supply electricity or support grid operations when needed. The terms “grid-scale storage” and “utility-scale storage” are commonly used for this role. “Grid-level storage” does not identify a standardized equipment class or a particular battery chemistry.

Storage is a secondary source of electricity, not primary generation: it stores electricity produced elsewhere. Because charging and discharging involve losses, a system returns less electrical energy than it uses to charge. The U.S. Energy Information Administration explains this in its overview of energy storage for electricity generation.

How to read storage capacity: MW, MWh, and duration

Three measures answer different questions:

  • Power capacity (MW): the maximum rate at which a system can deliver power.
  • Energy capacity (MWh): the amount of energy it can store.
  • Duration: how long it can discharge at a given power, subject to usable energy and operating limits.

The U.S. Department of Energy gives a terminology example: a 60 MW battery with four hours of storage has 240 MWh of energy capacity. As the DOE puts it in Solar-Plus-Storage 101, “A megawatt-hour (MWh) is the unit used to describe the amount of energy a battery can store.” A power rating alone does not tell you how long the system can sustain that output.

Technologies used for grid storage

Grid storage is a portfolio of technologies, each with distinct operating characteristics and siting needs. The U.S. Government Accountability Office surveys several in Utility-Scale Energy Storage: Technologies and Challenges for an Evolving Grid.

  • Batteries: These can respond quickly and provide short-duration flexibility and grid services. Lithium-ion batteries are prominent, while flow batteries represent a smaller share and may serve longer-duration applications.
  • Pumped-storage hydropower: The system pumps water uphill when electricity is available and releases it through turbines later. Its feasibility depends on suitable sites and infrastructure.
  • Compressed-air storage: Electricity is used to compress air for later use in generating power.
  • Flywheels: These store energy mechanically in a rotating mass and can provide rapid response.
  • Thermal storage: Heat can be stored and later used to generate electricity or support a grid-connected energy system. The DOE describes thermal storage paired with concentrated solar power in its Solar Integration: Solar Energy and Storage Basics.

What grid-level storage does

A storage system can serve more than one purpose over time, depending on its design, operating constraints, market arrangements, and grid needs. The U.S. Energy Information Administration describes applications for battery storage in its electricity storage overview, while the International Energy Agency discusses flexibility needs in Electricity 2026: Flexibility.

  • Sleek and Compact Design: Battery Daddy uses both sides to store up to 150 batteries of all types. Holds 58 AAs, 68 AAAs, (4) 9 Volt, 8 Cs, 8 Ds, & 8 Button Cells. Easily stores away in any drawer. Includes Battery Tester
  • Find the Right Battery: Incorrect storage drains batteries. Stay organized and be prepared for power outages, new gifts, or any time you need to replace a dead battery. Built-in carrying handle lets you take it anywhere
  • Battery Tester Included: Battery Daddy comes with a tester that can check whether your single-use or rechargable batteries are still good. Just align the negatives and positives of the batteries on the tester and you can see the result on the indicator
  • Easy Storage: The compact size allows for storage in drawers and shelves along with your other supplies and household items. The portable design has a sturdy carrying handle and secure heavy-duty latches so you can easily transport
  • Shift energy across time: charge when electricity is available and discharge later, including when demand is higher.
  • Balance the grid: respond to changes in supply and demand and provide services such as frequency regulation.
  • Support renewable integration: store some electricity produced during high-output periods for use later.
  • Contribute to peak supply or resilience: provide power when called on, depending on the system’s capacity, duration, and operating conditions.
  • Potentially defer network upgrades: in some cases, storage can help address a local grid constraint.

Does a grid need batteries to use renewable energy?

No single amount of battery storage is required everywhere, and batteries are not the only way to manage variable wind and solar output. The appropriate mix depends on the generation portfolio, the flexibility of conventional generators, transmission connections to neighboring systems, and the timing of demand and renewable production—including hourly, daily, and seasonal patterns. Other flexibility resources may be more economical in some systems. NREL’s Grid-Scale Battery Storage: Frequently Asked Questions explains why there is no universal rule of thumb for the amount of battery storage a grid needs.

Recent battery figures—and what they do not measure

The International Energy Agency reports that 108 GW of battery storage capacity was added worldwide in 2025, 40% more than in 2024, and that around 80% of the new battery capacity was utility-scale. It also reports that around 90% of 2025 battery deployments used lithium-iron phosphate (LFP), which it describes as typically cheaper and better suited to frequent cycling than more energy-dense chemistries often used in electric vehicles. These figures are specifically about batteries; they are not totals for all forms of grid storage. See the IEA’s Global Energy Review 2026: Technology—Battery storage.
