“Grey wire” is not a universal technical category in the standards covered here. Grey may describe a wire’s visible appearance, but appearance alone does not establish its conductor material, construction, or intended use. Applications depend on the wire’s specification. For example, ASTM defines uses for annealed copper-clad steel wire and separately covers silver-coated copper-clad steel wire for electronic applications; those standards do not identify either product as “grey wire.”
What does “grey wire” mean?
Without a product label, drawing, or specification, “grey wire” is ambiguous: it could refer to insulation color, surface finish, material, or a particular trade product. The standards discussed below describe specific wire constructions, not a single product category called grey wire. Do not infer what a wire can do from its color alone.
What are the documented applications of these wire types?

How do you identify the right wire for an application?
Start with the product’s technical documentation, not its color or a broad product name. Compare the features the applicable specification controls:

- Construction: Identify the conductor and any cladding or coating; for copper-clad steel, confirm that construction from the documentation.
- Electrical properties: Check conductivity or resistivity requirements for the intended use.
- Dimensions: Match diameter and other specified dimensions to the design.
- Mechanical properties and temper: Review applicable strength, elongation, and temper requirements.
- Application specification: Confirm that the product is specified for the intended application, rather than assuming that one wire category serves every use.
For example, ASTM B910/B910M addresses tensile strength, elongation, diameter, adhesion, surface defects, finish, copper thickness, density, and electrical resistivity. ASTM B501 evaluates properties including tensile strength, elongation, electrical resistivity, coating continuity and mass, dimensions, and density. A product’s compliance with a specification does not, by itself, establish that it is suitable for a particular installation.
Can you choose a wire by its grey appearance?
No. The standards establish product categories and their scopes, not a universal meaning for grey wire or a site-specific design decision. Obtain the manufacturer’s identification and specification, then check the applicable project requirements and codes before selecting or installing a wire. For grounding, telecommunications, or tracer-wire work, the relevant application specification is more informative than color alone.
