Yes, a sufficiently intense laser beam entering camera optics can permanently damage an image sensor. But that general risk does not establish that a particular green laser will damage a Flock camera: no Flock-specific laser-resistance rating, damage threshold, or test is established by the available sources.
What is known about laser damage to cameras
Laser exposure can damage camera image sensors when a sufficiently intense beam reaches the sensor through the optics. The outcome can vary with camera susceptibility and the laser’s actual output, wavelength, and interaction with the camera optics. Those general factors explain why damage is plausible, but they do not predict the result for a specific Flock unit.
No supported power, distance, or exposure-duration threshold is available for Flock cameras. It would be misleading to claim either that ordinary green pointers are harmless or that every green laser will damage a Flock camera.
What Flock says about its cameras and damaged equipment
Flock’s press-center FAQ describes its license plate reader cameras as capturing still, point-in-time images of vehicles visible from public roadways. The company also says damaging public safety equipment is illegal and that it works with customer agencies to investigate damaged or stolen equipment. That is Flock’s stated position; it does not provide a laser-specific defense or a technical threshold for damage.

Why green color and apparent brightness do not establish safety
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns that a pointer’s visible brightness is not a dependable indication of its power or hazard. A green beam that looks modest may still be hazardous, and the FDA cautions that some green, blue, and violet pointers can be overpowered. Its consumer guidance says never to look directly into a laser beam or aim a pointer at anyone. See the FDA’s laser pointer safety information.
Visible green light also does not rule out invisible infrared output. A government-hosted technical report, A Green Laser Pointer Hazard, describes one examined pointer that lacked an infrared-blocking filter. That finding concerns the tested device, not every green pointer; it is a reason not to judge a laser’s safety by eye alone. The FDA has separately warned that green pointers may be altered to emit more radiation than originally intended.

What the evidence cannot tell you
- Whether a particular green laser would damage a particular Flock camera.
- How much exposure, at what distance, or under what conditions would cause damage.
- Whether a specific Flock model has a laser-protection feature or what its sensor’s susceptibility is.
The available sources do not establish these model-specific details. Do not treat aiming a laser at a camera as a safe test or as a safe way to interact with public equipment.
If you are concerned about a camera or a laser
Do not point a laser at a camera, a person, or any other equipment. If a Flock camera appears damaged, report the concern to the relevant local agency rather than attempting to inspect or test it yourself. For pointer safety, follow FDA guidance and use only products with the required identification, warning, and class labeling.
