The 2023 Linux Foundation webinar Green (Ambient) Mesh: Sustainable Software for a Better Future explored whether Istio Ambient Mesh’s proxy architecture could improve resource utilization. Its sponsor, Solo.io, argues that moving some proxy work out of individual application pods can reduce duplicated compute overhead. The event and its companion article do not establish a universal resource reduction or independently verified carbon savings, so treat the environmental benefit as a claim to test in your own workloads.
What the webinar covered
The Linux Foundation recorded the webinar on December 5, 2023, with Alessandro Vozza, Developer Advocate at Solo.io, and Marino Wijay, Platform Advocate at Solo.io. The event page describes its aim as exploring “the intricate relationship between software and sustainability” and how software can be optimized for a greener future. It presented Istio Ambient mode as an architectural example, suggesting it may improve resource utilization while retaining security and feature parity with sidecar mode. That is the event’s framing, not a published measurement or independent environmental finding. Linux Foundation webinar page.
This is a discussion of sustainable software and mesh architecture, not a current Istio installation or release guide. The event page does not provide a numerical result for resource use or emissions.
How Ambient Mesh changes proxy placement
Sidecar model
In the conventional model described by Solo.io, each application pod has an injected sidecar proxy. This places proxy resources alongside each workload, which can mean repeated resource use across a deployment.
#1 Best Overall
- Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
- Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
- Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
- Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
Ambient model
Solo.io describes Ambient Mesh as moving layer-four traffic handling to z-tunnel proxies at the node level. For workloads that need layer-seven functionality—such as policies or traffic routing—waypoint proxies can be deployed selectively rather than alongside every application pod. The distinction is where proxy capabilities run and which workloads receive them; it does not mean every workload can omit all additional proxy components. Solo.io’s companion article.
Why this architecture is presented as a sustainability measure
Solo.io argues that avoiding a sidecar in every application pod can reduce duplicated compute resources, simplify operations, and lower software carbon intensity. The Linux Foundation event similarly describes Ambient as a possible route to better resource utilization. Those claims are plausible architectural motivations, but the two 2023 sources do not provide a measurement method, a broadly applicable benchmark, or independently verified carbon savings. Actual energy and emissions depend on the workload, infrastructure, utilization, and the boundary used for measurement.

- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
Solo.io’s article also discusses Gateway API as a common, provider-flexible configuration model for exposing services, with distinct roles for cluster operators and application developers. It presents that model as a way to simplify service exposure and preserve provider flexibility. Because the article dates from 2023, it should not be used on its own to infer current Gateway API support or maturity.
How to assess whether Ambient is a better fit
Compare the approaches against the same representative workload rather than assuming that a node-level proxy design will yield the same result everywhere. Account for the capabilities you use and measure resource use under stated conditions.
Rank #3
- WHOLE-HOME COVERAGE WITH NO DEAD ZONES: The router plus satellites create a seamless mesh system that blanket up to 6,000 sq ft in fast, reliable WiFi from the front door to the backyard and basement to rooftop, link up to 70 devices on one network
- EVERYONE ONLINE AT ONCE, NO SLOWDOWNS: Dual-Band technology with Enhanced Backhaul helps deliver faster WiFi across your home so WiFi stays fast on every device simultaneously
- NEXT-GEN WIFI 7 SPEEDS: Up to 5 Gbps, 2.4X faster than WiFi 6, for 8K streaming, gaming, VR & video calls. Your phones, laptops and TVs all connect, including WiFi 6 and WiFi 5. Real-world speeds vary depending on connected devices and internet plan
- EASY SET UP WITH THE ORBI APP: Guided step-by-step setup gets your mesh network running fast, then manage devices and guest WiFi from anywhere
- WORKS WITH ANY INTERNET PROVIDER: Compatible with cable or fiber Internet Service Provider equipment and ready for plans up to 2.5 Gbps. Simply connect Orbi to your existing modem for whole-home WiFi
- Proxy placement: Compare the per-application-pod sidecars in your current design with node-level z-tunnel proxies and any waypoints required by your Ambient workloads.
- Layer-seven needs: Identify which workloads require waypoint functionality, including the policies or traffic-routing behavior relevant to your deployment.
- Compute and memory: Measure the resources used by proxies and workloads in both configurations, using equivalent traffic and workload conditions.
- Security and observability: Check whether the capabilities and operational visibility you depend on are retained for the workloads being compared.
- Migration constraints: Consider whether you can adopt Ambient gradually and coexist with sidecar-managed workloads. Solo.io’s article describes gradual adoption and coexistence, rather than requiring an all-at-once change.
- Measurement boundary: State whether you are assessing proxy resource use, broader infrastructure energy, or carbon intensity. A reduction in one measure does not by itself establish an emissions reduction across the full system.
A useful result is a workload-specific comparison with its configuration, traffic conditions, measurement period, and system boundary documented. The webinar and companion article do not supply a universal benchmark to substitute for that evaluation.
