There is no universally best caliber in Gray Zone Warfare. The useful round is the one that penetrates the target’s helmet or body armor at the actual distance and barrel length you are using, while remaining affordable and available. Caliber determines which weapon and magazine can chamber a cartridge; cartridge construction, velocity, distance, dispersion and armor class determine whether the hit works.
This guide reflects information available on October 18, 2026, immediately before Rogue Ops (Update 0.5) enters Supporter Preview on October 19 and full release on October 22. Weapon pools, trader stock and ballistic values are patch-sensitive, so treat any tier list as provisional and verify the live ammunition chart after the update.

How penetration actually works
Gray Zone Warfare does not reduce ammunition choice to bullet diameter. A cartridge’s penetration result depends on several variables that interact at the moment of impact:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Armor class: the helmet and body protection have separate protection values and coverage.
- Cartridge type: FMJ, AP, SP and HP rounds have different penetration and wound behavior.
- Velocity: faster projectiles generally retain more penetration potential. Weapon configuration and barrel length can change velocity.
- Distance: a round can perform differently at the target range than it does at the muzzle.
- Dispersion and hit location: a precise hit on a helmet or exposed body area is a different problem from a shot landing on a plate.
- Weapon durability: ammunition type affects durability, so a loadout that looks efficient on paper can impose a maintenance cost.
The practical rule from the GZW|NET learning guide is simple: match ammo to armor. Inspect the helmet and body rows independently rather than assuming one penetration result applies to the entire target.

How to read the GZW|NET ballistic chart
GZW|NET’s filterable ammunition database lists caliber, barrel, distance, velocity, dispersion, vendor, price, and separate helmet and body penetration results. The color legend uses green for no penetration and red for penetration. Use it as a decision tool, not as a permanent ranking.
- Set the caliber and cartridge. Filter to the ammunition that your weapon can chamber. Do not select a round solely because its caliber number is larger.
- Set the barrel configuration. Choose the barrel length or weapon variant closest to your build. A compact platform can produce a different velocity from a rifle using the same cartridge.
- Set the intended distance. Check the range at which you expect the fight to occur. A result at point-blank range is not a guarantee at a longer engagement distance.
- Read helmet and body separately. A round may penetrate one protection zone and fail against the other. Plate coverage and hit location decide which result matters.
- Compare dispersion and velocity. Two rounds with similar penetration can have different practical hit probabilities or falloff.
- Check price and availability. Reserve scarce high-performance ammunition for targets that require it; use an economical round against unarmored enemies.
- Recheck after a patch. Community data is version-labeled and changes as the game is rebalanced, especially around major updates.
Armor classes and the M855 gap
For PMC-tier engagements, the GZW|NET learning guide recommends treating RF2 as the practical minimum protection. Its explanation is the M855 gap: M855 and comparable AP ammunition can defeat RF1, so RF1 should not be treated as dependable protection against equipped PMC opponents. RF2 gives you a more realistic baseline, but it is not an invulnerability threshold; the exact helmet, plate coverage, hit location and current chart result still matter.
Use armor class as a starting filter rather than a promise. Before loading into a raid, identify the likely enemy protection, then confirm that your chosen round shows penetration for both the relevant body area and the helmet at your engagement distance. If the chart shows a body failure but helmet penetration, aim for the head only when your accuracy and the target’s exposure make that a sensible plan. If the helmet result fails, do not assume a face shot will work through the protected portion.

Caliber controls chambering and magazine compatibility. It does not, by itself, tell you which weapon or ammunition is best. The community-maintained Gray Zone Warfare Wiki ammunition index provides these mappings:
| Caliber | Weapon examples | What the mapping tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 9x19mm | Glock 17, Beretta M9A1, MP5 | These platforms use the same caliber family, but barrel, velocity, magazine and ammunition choices can produce different results. |
| 4.6x30mm | MP7A1, MP7A2 | A high-velocity PDW cartridge intended for low recoil and close-quarter armor performance; verify current chart values after rebalancing. |
| Other weapon calibers | Not stated as a complete, permanent list | Verify the chambering and magazine family in the current inventory or live chart instead of inferring compatibility or penetration from bullet diameter. |
MADFINGER’s April 2025 weapons-and-gear announcement described 4.6×30mm as a high-velocity PDW cartridge designed for low recoil and effective armor penetration in close-quarter engagements. That is design intent, not a permanent performance guarantee. The live chart remains the authority for the current patch.
FMJ, AP, SP and HP: what each choice means
FMJ for general-purpose and unarmored targets
FMJ is the economical baseline when the target is unarmored or lightly protected enough for the chart to show penetration. It is usually the sensible round for routine AI enemies when spending AP would not change the outcome. FMJ is not automatically weak: its value comes from matching the target rather than overpaying for penetration you do not need.
AP for hard armor
AP ammunition is the reserve option for protection that ordinary rounds cannot defeat. Check the chart at the exact barrel and distance before committing to a stack, then carry enough for the expected high-protection fights rather than filling every magazine with the most expensive round. AP can affect durability, and its availability may be limited by vendors or world loot.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →SP and HP for wound effect
Rogue Ops (Update 0.5) changes wound behavior. MADFINGER’s official 0.5 weapons devlog states: “SP and HP ammunition now create larger wounds than FMJ and AP rounds.” Larger wounds do not automatically mean better armor penetration. Choose SP or HP when the target’s protection and the chart support that choice, and remember that the update’s wound model may make damage feel different even when penetration has not improved.
Do not confuse damage with penetration
A round that creates a larger wound after passing through tissue is not necessarily the round that can pass through a plate. First solve the armor problem with the penetration grid; then use wound behavior, recoil, dispersion and cost to choose between rounds that can already reach the target.
Why barrel length, velocity and distance change the answer
Two weapons chambered for the same cartridge can produce different penetration outcomes. Barrel length influences velocity, and velocity changes the potential available at impact. Compact weapons can therefore lose enough velocity to alter a penetration result compared with a longer-barrel version.
Distance compounds the effect. At close range, a round may retain enough velocity to penetrate a protection level that it cannot defeat farther away. Conversely, a long-barrel configuration may preserve a useful margin at range. Dispersion also matters: a theoretical penetration advantage is irrelevant if the build cannot place rounds on the protected area consistently.

When comparing configurations, record all of the following rather than quoting a caliber in isolation:
- Barrel length or weapon variant.
- Velocity shown for that configuration.
- Target distance.
- Helmet penetration and body penetration as separate results.
- Dispersion and recoil control.
- Magazine capacity and reload demands.
Building a loadout step by step
1. Define the fight before choosing the round
Classify the expected encounter as PvE against ordinary AI, PMC-tier PvE, PvP, or a mixed PvEvP raid. Also estimate whether fights will be close-quarter or longer-range. A compact PDW can be sensible indoors, while a longer barrel may preserve velocity for open terrain.
2. Identify the armor you must defeat
Use the likely enemy’s helmet and body protection as two separate requirements. If you do not know the exact item, plan for the highest plausible class rather than assuming every opponent is unarmored.
3. Select a cartridge that passes the chart test
Filter the ammunition database by weapon-compatible caliber, barrel and distance. Reject any round that fails against the protection zone you must hit. If no affordable round passes both zones, change the engagement plan, weapon configuration or target priority instead of pretending caliber alone will solve it.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →4. Balance performance against economy
Compare velocity, dispersion, price and availability among the rounds that can penetrate. Keep a cheaper general-purpose load for unarmored AI and preserve AP or other scarce high-performance ammunition for hard targets. This two-tier approach prevents expensive rounds from being consumed on enemies that FMJ already handles.
5. Build magazines for the mission
Carry the armor-capable ammunition in the magazines you expect to use against players or PMC-tier targets. Keep the general-purpose ammunition available for low-risk targets, but label or separate magazines so a panic reload does not leave you with the wrong round for a plated opponent.
6. Account for durability and resupply
The official 0.4 devlog says ammunition type affects weapon durability. Add repair or replacement cost to your comparison, and confirm whether your chosen round is sold by a trader, found in the world, or both. A theoretically superior loadout that cannot be replenished is a poor sustained-raid choice.
Choosing between otherwise viable weapons
There is no authoritative permanent “best weapon” ranking. Use the following comparison axes whenever two builds can fire a cartridge that passes the armor test:
| Axis | Question to ask | Why it changes the loadout |
|---|---|---|
| Armor penetration | Does the round penetrate the intended helmet and body at the actual distance? | A nominally powerful caliber is useless if the selected cartridge fails the target armor. |
| Barrel and velocity | Does this platform preserve enough velocity for the engagement range? | Compact weapons may lose penetration potential compared with longer barrels. |
| Dispersion and recoil | Can you place repeat shots on the unprotected or penetrable area? | Practical hit probability can outweigh a small paper advantage. |
| Magazine and reload | How many rounds are available before a reload? | Capacity and reload time matter when a plated target requires multiple hits. |
| Cost and availability | Can you buy or find enough ammunition for repeated raids? | Scarce AP is better reserved for targets that require it. |
| Durability | How does the ammunition affect weapon wear? | Higher ongoing maintenance can erase a small combat advantage. |
| Role | Is the build for PvE, PvEvP, close quarters or longer-range fights? | Weapon handling and velocity requirements change with the mission. |
Update 0.5: weapons, parts and availability
Rogue Ops changes the comparison set enough that older tier lists can become stale. MADFINGER’s official October 2026 materials list seven new weapons:
| Weapon | Availability note |
|---|---|
| AUG and AUG A3 | New weapon platforms in Update 0.5. |
| Benelli M4 | New weapon platform in Update 0.5. |
| G3 | New weapon platform in Update 0.5. |
| G36 | New weapon platform in Update 0.5. |
| FAMAS | New weapon platform in Update 0.5. |
| UMP | New weapon platform in Update 0.5. |
| Glock 18C | New weapon platform in Update 0.5. |
The update also adds 370 weapon parts, expanding build combinations for existing and new platforms. Most new weapons are found throughout the world rather than purchased from vendors, and rare weapon builds have low drop rates. That availability changes the value calculation: a powerful configuration you rarely find may be less useful for a repeatable loadout than a slightly less specialized build you can replace consistently.
MADFINGER also claims approximately 10% higher FPS across the board in the October 18 technical devlog. That is a performance claim, not a weapon-stat or penetration claim, so it should not be used to rank ammunition.

Routine AI and low-armor missions
Use the least expensive cartridge that the chart shows penetrating the expected body and helmet protection. A general-purpose FMJ magazine saves AP for later and reduces the cost of ordinary clears. Carry a small reserve of armor-capable ammunition if the mission can escalate into a PMC or player encounter.

PMC-tier engagements
Plan around at least RF2 protection as the practical baseline recommended by the GZW|NET guide. Check whether your selected round defeats the expected helmet and body separately, and favor the configuration with enough velocity at the actual range. Keep AP for the hard targets rather than firing it indiscriminately at every AI.
PvP in close quarters
A low-recoil, high-velocity PDW configuration can be attractive when fights are short-range and movement is constrained. The 4.6×30mm family was designed for that role, but current penetration and availability must be confirmed in the live chart. Magazine capacity, reload time and dispersion can matter as much as the cartridge when both players are exposed for only a moment.
Longer-range mixed raids
Favor a longer barrel or a configuration that retains velocity at distance, then verify the chart at the range you actually expect. Carry a cheaper round for unarmored targets and a limited armor-capable reserve. Do not assume that a result measured at close range carries across the map.

Common mistakes and fixes
“I chose the biggest caliber, so I should penetrate.”
Why it fails: caliber controls compatibility, not the complete armor interaction.
Fix: select a compatible cartridge, then check helmet and body penetration at the correct barrel and distance.
“The body result applies to the helmet.”
Why it fails: the chart treats helmet and body protection independently.
Fix: read both rows and aim according to the protection actually covering the hit location.
“A compact version is identical to the rifle.”
Why it fails: barrel length can change velocity enough to change penetration.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix: compare the exact weapon and barrel configuration, not just the caliber label.
“AP should fill every magazine.”
Why it fails: high-performance ammunition can be scarce, expensive and harder on durability.
Fix: use FMJ or another cheaper round where the chart already shows reliable penetration, and reserve AP for hard targets.
“Old tier lists are still authoritative.”
Why it fails: Update 0.5 changes the weapon pool, parts and wound behavior, while community charts are version-sensitive.
Fix: check the current chart after the October 22, 2026 full release and repeat the check after later balance patches.
“A larger wound means automatic armor penetration.”
Why it fails: Update 0.5’s larger SP and HP wounds describe post-hit wound behavior, not a universal penetration increase.
Fix: solve penetration first, then choose wound behavior among rounds that can reach the target.
What to verify after Update 0.5 launches
- Whether trader stock and prices for your preferred rounds changed.
- Whether the new AUG, Benelli M4, G3, G36, FAMAS, UMP and Glock 18C use ammunition families already in your supply.
- Whether a new barrel or part changes velocity or dispersion enough to alter the chart result.
- Whether helmet and body penetration values changed for the cartridge you rely on.
- Whether durability costs changed with the revised ammunition behavior.
- Whether world-spawn rates make a rare build practical for repeated raids.
Rebuild your loadout from those observations rather than importing a pre-0.5 tier list unchanged.
