“Application has been blocked from accessing graphics hardware” means Windows or the graphics stack stopped an application from continuing to use the GPU after a problem. It does not, by itself, prove that your graphics card is failing. Start by checking whether the error affects one app or several, then work from the least disruptive fixes—restarting the app and checking its settings—toward driver, stability, and hardware diagnosis.
What the graphics hardware message means
Microsoft documents VIDEO_TDR_APPLICATION_BLOCKED, value 0x00000142, as a live-dump identifier indicating that an application was blocked from accessing graphics hardware. Microsoft says the code “can never be used for a real bug check; it is used to identify live dumps.” It is a programmer-oriented reference, not a consumer diagnosis or proof that a GPU has failed. Microsoft Learn: Bug Check 0x142.
In consumer troubleshooting, this message is associated with graphics operations that stop responding and Windows attempting a Timeout Detection and Recovery (TDR) reset. The display may flicker or recover while the affected app stays black, frozen, or unusable. That explanation describes a common troubleshooting context; the notification alone cannot identify the underlying cause. iTechGuides’ Windows 11 troubleshooting guide.
First identify whether one app or several are affected
| What you observe | Where to focus first |
|---|---|
| The error appears in one game or application | That app’s graphics workload and settings, overlays, modifications, updates, or choice of GPU. |
| Several unrelated graphics-heavy apps fail | Broader graphics-driver and system-stability checks, including stock hardware settings, cooling, and power. |
| The issue began just after a graphics-driver update | Test whether rolling back the relevant adapter’s driver restores stability. |
| Artifacts appear, the PC crashes under graphics load, or the GPU vanishes from Device Manager | After basic software and stability checks, seek hardware diagnosis; these symptoms are more concerning than the message alone. |
This pattern does not prove a cause, but it helps choose a sensible next check. On a hybrid-graphics laptop, the app may use an integrated or discrete adapter, so identify which GPU it uses before changing a driver.

Try the low-risk fixes first
- Close and reopen the affected app. A graphics recovery can restore the desktop without restoring the app. If the app remains frozen or black, end it and launch it again.
- Restart Windows. If reopening the app does not help, restart the PC before making broader changes.
- Update the app. If only one application is affected, install its available update and temporarily remove optional mods or plug-ins that change its graphics behavior.
Check or reinstall the driver for the GPU the app uses
Use Windows Update’s optional driver updates or the official support page for your PC or graphics-card manufacturer. Choose a package that matches your hardware and Windows version; avoid third-party driver-download sites. On a laptop with more than one graphics adapter, confirm the app’s GPU selection so you do not update or reinstall the wrong adapter’s driver.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters and identify the adapter used by the affected app.
- Right-click that adapter and choose Update driver, or use the matching driver package from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
- If the problem started immediately after a driver update, open the adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver if that option is available.
If updating does not resolve a recurring problem, reinstall the correct manufacturer driver for the adapter. The exact installer steps vary by PC and GPU model; follow that manufacturer’s instructions rather than removing unrelated devices.

If it happens only in one game or app
Reduce the work that app asks the GPU to do, then see whether the failure recurs. Change one setting at a time where practical so you can tell which adjustment matters.

- Cap the frame rate rather than letting it run uncapped.
- Disable overlays and optional hardware acceleration, then retest.
- Temporarily remove mods or plug-ins and install the app’s latest update.
If these changes stop the error, the result points toward an app-specific workload or interaction, not a definitive hardware diagnosis.

If several apps fail, check stability, cooling, and power
Recurring failures across unrelated workloads justify broader checks. Return GPU, CPU, and memory overclock or undervolt settings to stock defaults. Check that vents are unobstructed, fans are operating, and—on a desktop PC—the graphics card’s power connections are secure. Do not begin repeated stress tests if the computer is already crashing during ordinary use.
When to seek hardware diagnosis
Arrange a qualified diagnosis if the problem continues after the driver and stability checks, especially if multiple unrelated 3D apps fail, you see visual artifacts, the PC crashes under graphics load, or the GPU disappears from Device Manager. Those symptoms merit investigation, but the notification by itself still does not establish that the graphics card is defective.

Why changing TdrDelay is not a general fix
TdrDelay changes how long Windows waits before treating a GPU operation as hung. Increasing it does not repair an underlying driver, app workload, temperature, power, stability, or hardware problem; it can simply make a genuine hang last longer. Do not treat registry changes to this value as a routine fix for the notification.
