For a new GrapheneOS phone, start with a Google Pixel 8 or newer model from the project’s recommended list, then confirm that the exact unit can unlock its bootloader. The model’s remaining Google security-support window matters more than a low used price. GrapheneOS officially supports some older Pixels, but support does not make every model an equally sensible purchase in 2026.
GrapheneOS recommends buying a supported device and installing the operating system yourself. If you buy a phone that already has GrapheneOS installed, verify its verified-boot key, reset it from recovery, and configure Auditor before trusting it with personal data.
Which Pixel phones support GrapheneOS?
The current GrapheneOS production-support list includes the Google Pixel 6, 6 Pro and 6a; Pixel 7, 7 Pro and 7a; Pixel 8, 8 Pro and 8a; Pixel Fold; Pixel Tablet; Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold and 9a; and Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, 10 Pro Fold and 10a. The Pixel Tablet is supported but is not a phone. Check the official GrapheneOS Frequently Asked Questions before ordering because the support list and dates can change.
“Supported” means the project currently publishes production releases for the model. It does not mean that every supported model is a good new purchase. GrapheneOS strongly recommends Pixel 8 and later because those generations receive a longer minimum support guarantee from launch and include newer security features.

Recommended models for a new purchase
The recommended-buy list contains Pixel 8, 8 Pro and 8a; the Pixel 9 family and 9a; and the Pixel 10 family and 10a. A Pixel 6 or 7 can still be useful when its price is unusually low and you accept the shorter remaining update horizon, but it should not be treated as equivalent to a current recommended model.
OEM support dates by model
The dates below are the minimum OEM support end dates displayed in the GrapheneOS FAQ. They are Google’s OEM support commitments as reported there, not a promise that GrapheneOS will provide full updates after Google stops releasing device updates. GrapheneOS says full security updates depend on the OEM continuing to release them. In some cases it may publish temporary extended-support releases after that point, but those cannot provide full security patches and are intended only as a transition measure.
| Pixel model | Minimum OEM support end | Buying implication |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel 10a | March 2033 (GrapheneOS FAQ) | Longest listed horizon |
| Pixel 10 Pro Fold | October 2032 (GrapheneOS FAQ) | Foldable with an extended horizon |
| Pixel 10 Pro XL, 10 Pro and 10 | August 2032 (GrapheneOS FAQ) | Long support for standard and XL sizes |
| Pixel 9a | April 2032 (GrapheneOS FAQ) | Long-lived lower-cost model |
| Pixel 9 Pro Fold, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro and 9 | August 2031 (GrapheneOS FAQ) | Flagship and foldable options |
| Pixel 8a | May 2031 (GrapheneOS FAQ) | Long support in the smaller-price tier |
| Pixel 8 Pro and 8 | October 2030 (GrapheneOS FAQ) | Entry point to the seven-year generation |
| Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet | June 2028 (GrapheneOS FAQ) | Earlier-generation form factors |
| Pixel 7a | May 2028 (GrapheneOS FAQ) | Shorter horizon than Pixel 8a |
| Pixel 7 Pro and 7 | October 2027 (GrapheneOS FAQ) | Buy only with a clear discount and planned replacement |
| Pixel 6a | July 2027 (GrapheneOS FAQ) | Near-term replacement planning required |
| Pixel 6 Pro and 6 | October 2026 (GrapheneOS FAQ) | Effectively an end-of-life purchase for most buyers |
Pixel 8 and later have a seven-year minimum support guarantee from launch, compared with the previous five-year minimum for earlier generations, according to the GrapheneOS FAQ. Use the table as a support-horizon comparison, not as a guarantee that the project will continue full updates beyond the OEM date.
How to choose between supported Pixels
For the longest useful life
Choose a Pixel 10a, Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL or Pixel 10 Pro Fold when the form factor and current retail price suit you. The Pixel 10a has the latest listed minimum OEM end date, March 2033. A newer model gives you more time before the OEM dependency becomes the limiting factor, although the exact model still must be unlockable.
For a lower entry cost without leaving the long-support tier
Consider a Pixel 8, 8 Pro or 8a, or a Pixel 9-series model. Pixel 8 and 8 Pro are listed through October 2030, while Pixel 8a is listed through May 2031. A used Pixel 8-series phone can therefore be a sensible compromise if the seller can prove that the specific unit is not a carrier-locked variant.

For a used Pixel 6 or 7
Older models can still install GrapheneOS while they remain on the production-support list, but their remaining OEM window is much shorter. A low purchase price does not add security-update time. Treat these phones as short-term projects, price in an earlier replacement, and reject any listing that cannot establish bootloader unlockability.
For foldables and tablets
Pixel Fold, Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Pixel 10 Pro Fold are supported foldable choices, with different end dates shown in the table. Pixel Tablet is also supported, but it is not a phone; do not buy it if your requirement is cellular phone use. Pick by your actual form-factor need only after checking support and unlockability.

Check the exact unit before paying
Model names alone are not enough. Two phones sold under the same family name can differ by carrier configuration, region SKU or software state. Complete these checks before a used purchase or before accepting a seller’s preinstalled-GrapheneOS claim.
- Identify the precise model. Match the retail name and storage or size variant to the current supported list in the GrapheneOS FAQ. Ask the seller for a photo of the device information screen or the original model details rather than relying on a generic listing title.
- Ask whether the bootloader can be unlocked. The seller should be able to demonstrate that the phone permits OEM unlocking. If the seller cannot test it, treat unlockability as unconfirmed and use a returnable purchase.
- Determine whether it is a carrier variant. GrapheneOS explains that some carrier devices carry a carrier ID that activates a configuration disabling carrier and bootloader unlocking. Prefer a carrier-agnostic unit unless the exact carrier model has been verified as unlockable.
- Check the remaining OEM window. Compare the exact model with the support table, then decide whether the remaining years justify the price. Do not compare a cheap Pixel 6 with a Pixel 8 solely by purchase price.
- Confirm a return path. A seller’s statement that a phone is “unlocked” can refer only to SIM use, not bootloader unlocking. Keep the phone returnable until you have checked OEM unlocking on the device itself.
Why carrier status matters
On certain model variants, enabling OEM unlocking requires internet access so the stock operating system can check whether the device was sold as carrier-locked. A phone that cannot complete that check may not expose the option you need. Ask the seller to connect it to the internet, open the developer options, and show the OEM-unlocking state before the return period ends.
Pixel 6a stock-software caveat
The official WebUSB guide documents a specific Pixel 6a condition: OEM unlocking does not work with the factory stock OS version. The phone must first receive the June 2022 release or a later over-the-air update, followed by a factory reset. This applies to an old stock-software state; a phone purchased in 2026 may already be updated, but you should still follow the current instructions at the official WebUSB installer guide instead of assuming the requirement has been met.

Should you buy a phone with GrapheneOS preinstalled?
GrapheneOS says it is not affiliated with or endorsing companies that sell preinstalled devices. Its official recommendation is to buy a supported device and install GrapheneOS yourself. Self-installation gives you a direct verification path and avoids trusting an unknown seller’s software-handling process.
If you nevertheless choose a preinstalled phone, use this sequence before adding accounts or private data:
- Verify the verified-boot key. Confirm that the installed system’s verified-boot key hash is the genuine GrapheneOS key, using the project’s current documentation. A seller’s screenshot or a claim that the phone is “official” is not enough.
- Reset from recovery. After verifying the key, perform a factory reset from the recovery environment. This erases user data and protects against tampering that could survive a normal in-system reset.
- Set up Auditor. Configure local or remote attestation through Auditor and check that the device reports the expected operating-system and boot state.
- Check the support date again. A preinstalled operating system does not extend the phone’s OEM support window. Avoid end-of-life or near-end-of-life hardware even when the installation itself appears genuine.
Prepare to install GrapheneOS yourself
GrapheneOS provides two official installation methods: WebUSB, recommended for most users, and a command-line procedure for more technical users. Read the current guides before starting because browser, device and release requirements can change.
WebUSB requirements
- A supported Pixel whose exact variant permits bootloader unlocking.
- A compatible desktop browser with WebUSB support.
- A reliable USB data cable and a computer connection that will not be interrupted.
- A complete backup of anything you need from the current phone.
The WebUSB installer is documented at https://grapheneos.org/install/web. Follow its on-screen order rather than improvising steps from an old video or forum post.
Command-line requirements
The CLI guide requires a computer with at least 2 GB of free memory and 32 GB of free storage, a USB cable and one of the supported computer environments. Use a high-quality, standards-compliant USB-C cable and avoid a USB hub when possible. The complete procedure is at https://grapheneos.org/install/cli.

Back up before unlocking
Unlocking the bootloader requires on-device confirmation and wipes all data. Installing GrapheneOS replaces the existing operating system and its data. Copy photos, messages, authenticator exports, password-manager backups and any other irreplaceable files before you begin, and allow time to reinstall and configure applications afterward.
Installation workflow
- Update the stock phone where practical. Complete pending stock-system updates before installation, especially when the official guide identifies a model-specific prerequisite.
- Enable the required developer settings. Follow the current WebUSB or CLI guide to enable OEM unlocking and USB debugging. If OEM unlocking is unavailable, stop and resolve the carrier or software-state issue rather than forcing the process.
- Unlock the bootloader. Confirm the on-device warning only after your backup is complete. The confirmation performs the data wipe.
- Run the official installer. Use the WebUSB flow for the simpler guided experience, or the CLI commands exactly as documented. Keep the cable connected directly to the computer.
- Relock when instructed. The official process includes the appropriate verified-boot configuration. Do not substitute unofficial images or skip verification steps.
- Complete first boot and updates. Allow the new system to start, connect it to the internet, and install available GrapheneOS updates before restoring data.
- Restore selectively. Reinstall applications from sources you trust, then recheck permissions and account access instead of blindly restoring every old setting.

Use these priorities in order. Price and physical preferences are personal and retailer-dependent; the first four checks determine whether the phone is a sound GrapheneOS candidate.
| Priority | Question to answer | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Production support | Is the exact retail model on the current supported list? | Reject unsupported models, regardless of discount. |
| 2. Recommended status | Is it Pixel 8 or later on the recommended-buy list? | Prefer this tier for a new purchase. |
| 3. OEM horizon | How long does the model remain within the listed OEM window? | Use the support-date table and plan replacement timing. |
| 4. Unlockability | Does this exact carrier and region variant allow OEM unlocking? | Obtain proof before the return period expires. |
| 5. Price and condition | Is the price appropriate for the remaining support time? | Compare current listings; no fixed price is established here. |
| 6. Form factor | Does the size or foldable design fit your use? | Choose only after the technical checks pass. |
Common buying and installation mistakes
Mistake: equating “supported” with “recommended”
Older Pixels can appear on the production list while offering only a short OEM horizon. Use the recommended list and the end-date table separately.

- Fully unlocked for all Carriers. Compatible with major US carriers including Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile, plus supported MVNO networks. Carrier Unlocked models do not provide an unlocked bootloader.
Mistake: buying a carrier model without checking the carrier ID
Some carrier configurations permanently disable carrier and bootloader unlocking. If the seller cannot establish unlockability for that exact unit, choose a carrier-agnostic model or keep looking.
Mistake: trusting a preinstalled system without resetting it
Verify the verified-boot key, reset from recovery, and configure Auditor before signing in. The reset erases data, so perform it before setup rather than after storing files.
Mistake: starting without a backup or suitable cable
Bootloader unlocking wipes the phone. A poor cable, hub or interrupted connection can also derail installation. Back up first and use a standards-compliant direct USB connection.
Mistake: assuming GrapheneOS replaces the OEM support window
GrapheneOS can only fully provide security updates while the OEM releases the underlying device updates. Temporary extended support after the OEM date is not equivalent to full patch coverage.
Practical buying checklist
- Exact Pixel model confirmed against the current GrapheneOS support list.
- Pixel 8 or newer selected when buying new, unless there is a deliberate reason to choose an older model.
- Minimum OEM support end date checked for that model.
- Carrier and region variant identified.
- OEM unlocking demonstrated or covered by a reliable return policy.
- Seller’s “unlocked” wording distinguished from bootloader-unlockable status.
- For preinstalled GrapheneOS: verified-boot key checked, recovery reset completed and Auditor configured.
- Backup completed before bootloader unlocking.
- WebUSB-compatible browser or CLI computer requirements met.
- Direct, high-quality USB-C data cable available.
- Time reserved for the data wipe, installation, updates and app reconfiguration.
The safest default is a carrier-agnostic Pixel 8 or newer from the recommended list, purchased with enough return protection to test OEM unlocking, followed by a self-install using the current official guide.
