A laser-patterned graphene oxide surface can show iridescent color while making water form nearly spherical droplets that cling strongly—even when the surface is turned upside down. The effect comes from a deliberately engineered surface, not ordinary graphene oxide: two-beam laser interference creates a grooved, multilevel texture, while irradiation reduces hydrophilic oxygen-containing groups.
How the graphene oxide surface was made
In a 2012 report, researchers at Jilin University in Changchun, China, used two laser beams to create an interference pattern on layered graphene oxide. The pattern formed parallel grooves about 2 μm apart. The resulting material is therefore a laser-patterned surface, not a claim that untreated graphene oxide naturally repels water. Chemistry World’s 2012 report describes the work.
Why it looks rainbow-colored
The color is iridescent structural color, not pigment added to graphene oxide. Periodic grooves act like a diffraction grating, separating white light into component wavelengths. The report also notes dense nanofolds and convolutions at the grating edges, which the researchers thought contributed to the optical effect. As the viewing or lighting angle changes, the reflected wavelengths can change too, producing the shimmering appearance.

Why water beads—and why the drops stay put
The researchers attributed the water-repelling behavior to two changes caused by laser patterning: multilevel roughness and a reduction in hydrophilic oxygen-containing functional groups. The rough texture and lower surface energy together favor water beading. Yong-Lai Zhang, a member of the team, explained that both the microscopic unevenness and the decrease in hydrophilic oxide-based groups contributed to superhydrophobicity.

The reported droplets were nearly spherical but strongly adhesive, remaining attached even when the surface was held upside down. That behavior is closer to water on a rose petal than to the low-adhesion, easy-roll-off behavior often associated with lotus-inspired surfaces. “Repels water” here means that water beads rather than spreading into a film; it does not mean the droplets necessarily roll away.
Superhydrophobicity is generally defined using a water contact angle greater than 150°, according to a 2020 review. That is a general terminology threshold, not a measured contact angle for the 2012 specimen. The available report does not establish a specimen-specific contact-angle value. The 2020 review discusses graphene-based superhydrophobic surfaces.

What the researchers proposed—and what was demonstrated
The report suggested that the surface could be useful for controlling small liquid volumes, microfluidics, and liquid-sample analysis. It also proposed that the iridescence might influence the optical properties or appearance of graphene-based microdevices. These are potential applications, not evidence of a finished commercial device or an established deployed use.
The cited work is Wang and coauthors’ “Biomimetic graphene surfaces with superhydrophobicity and iridescence,” published in Chemistry—An Asian Journal in 2012, volume 7, pages 301–304, DOI 10.1002/asia.201100882. A later review places it within broader research on graphene-based superhydrophobic surfaces.

What remains unknown about performance
The available sources do not establish a specimen-specific contact angle, quantified durability, abrasion resistance, long-term stability, manufacturing scale, or performance after repeated use. Those gaps matter for practical applications: a striking laboratory surface is not necessarily robust enough for a fluid-handling device or production process. The reported observation of droplets adhering upside down describes wetting behavior, not a durability test.
