Granny Memories is described as an Android app that helps a storyteller turn recorded memories into memoir chapters while keeping review and approval in her hands. In its proposed workflow, chapter writing happens on the phone, but audio transcription uses an external service—an important distinction for anyone weighing privacy and convenience.
How does Granny Memories turn a voice note into a chapter?
The app is designed as a guided memoir workflow, not a general-purpose chatbot. According to project author Paula’s project write-up, a storyteller records a memory or selects an existing voice note, then works through a series of review steps before any draft becomes part of a book.
- Record or select a story. Start with a new recording or an existing voice note.
- Review the transcript. The app transcribes the audio and flags words it considers uncertain so the storyteller can correct them.
- Check the extracted ideas. It separates the story into ideas tied to what was said. The described checks require these ideas to quote the transcript literally.
- Approve voice traits. The app suggests traits for the storyteller’s voice, supported by quotations, and asks her to approve or reject them.
- Review a chapter draft. The app drafts a short chapter from the approved material, with pointers to moments in the source recording.
- Approve and organize. The storyteller reviews the chapter and can organize approved chapters into a book.
A passage marker such as “Audio 1 · 00:20” is intended to open the corresponding point in the recording. That link gives the storyteller a way to check the source rather than relying on the draft alone.

What stays on the phone, and what goes online?
The project write-up describes two different processing paths. Chapter writing runs locally on a Samsung Galaxy S24 using Gemma 4 E2B, a quantized GGUF Q4_K_M model, through llama.rn. Audio transcription is the external network call: the app uses ElevenLabs Scribe v2 with automatic language detection.

Paula reports that the quantized model is about 3.1 GB and, on the project’s Galaxy S24 with an Exynos 2400, took about five seconds to load and generated 11–12 tokens per second using the CPU only. Those figures describe the author’s specific setup; they are not independent benchmarks or performance promises for other phones.
The author says transcript text and writing stay on the device, while the audio is sent to the transcription service. The user supplies an API key, which the app reportedly stores in Android secure storage. This describes the project’s stated architecture, not a general guarantee about data handling or a substitute for checking the service’s terms and the app’s implementation.

How does it try to keep the memoir in the storyteller’s words?
Control is built into the described process: the storyteller can correct uncertain transcript words, accept or reject proposed voice traits, and approve chapters. The project also describes checks intended to limit unsupported additions: cleaned text must use only spoken words, extracted ideas must quote the transcript literally, and chapter paragraphs must refer to existing ideas.
If a check fails twice, the described fallback is to retain the storyteller’s words as spoken. Paula also recounts that a small model once introduced a causal detail that had not been spoken; restricting its inputs to literal quotations addressed that example. These are implementation claims and an anecdote from the project write-up, not an independent audit or a measured guarantee. No such workflow can establish that invented details are impossible, so the recording links and human review remain important.

What are the practical tradeoffs?
Local drafting means working within a phone’s limits
Running the writing model on-device avoids sending chapter text to a cloud writing model in the described design, but it requires downloading and loading a sizable model and depends on available memory. Paula reports that Android killed the app for low memory on a second run until the model was released between tasks. That is a project-specific development lesson, not evidence that Android phones generally behave the same way.
Transcription still depends on an external service
Because audio transcription uses ElevenLabs Scribe v2, the workflow is not fully offline. A user should account for connectivity and the external service’s handling of audio before recording sensitive family stories.

Review steps preserve agency but take time
Correcting uncertain words and approving traits and chapters add work compared with handing a recording to an automatic transcription-and-writing service. In return, the storyteller gets explicit opportunities to shape the text and check it against the recording.

Project tests do not establish broad readiness
The author says the project has 23 Node tests, including a fake-model end-to-end run. That is evidence of software checks described by the author, not proof of performance with real families or compatibility across Android devices. The write-up also mentions a React Native/Expo form-data change encountered during development; it is a project-specific implementation issue rather than a user-facing compatibility rule.

Is Granny Memories available for your Android phone?
The project write-up does not establish app-store availability, supported Android versions, or a general device compatibility list. The Galaxy S24 is the author’s reported test setup, not a stated minimum requirement or a verified recommendation for buyers. The write-up describes an Android app project and its design, but does not substantiate that the app is publicly downloadable.
What does the demonstration show?
The demo uses an ElevenLabs AI voice from its Voice Library to read a fictional memory written for the demonstration. Paula says no real family recordings appear in the repository or video. The demo therefore illustrates the proposed workflow; it is not an example of a real grandmother’s recording or a published memoir created from one.
