Grafana Tempo 3.1, announced by Grafana Labs on September 30, 2026 (the v3.1.0 tag was published September 29), adds selector-based trace redaction, sampling-aware TraceQL metrics, arithmetic in metrics queries, and a faster span-only read path. It also changes the default block format for new writes to vParquet5 while continuing to read vParquet4 and vParquet3 blocks.
What Tempo 3.1 changes
Tempo 3.0 could redact a trace only when an operator supplied its trace ID. Version 3.1 accepts a TraceQL selector, so a redaction job can find every matching trace by an attribute such as a leaked personal-data field. Metrics queries can now compensate for head-based sampling, combine aggregations with arithmetic, and use a span-only fetch path that reduces read work on vParquet5 blocks.

Redact matching traces with a TraceQL query
Use the Tempo CLI against the scheduler and begin with a dry run. The command evaluates the selector and reports how many traces it would remove without changing stored blocks.

After checking the dry-run result, run the same job without --dry-run to modify matching blocks. Tempo 3.1 also lets you add --start and --end so the job is limited to a time window rather than every matching trace in a block.

Upgrade every worker before using a time window
Do not submit a windowed redaction until every scheduler and worker is running Tempo 3.1. An older worker does not understand the window, ignores it, and redacts every query match in the block without returning an error. This is a rollout-safety requirement, not merely a feature compatibility note.
Make TraceQL rates and counts sampling-aware
Head-based sampling stores only a fraction of incoming spans. An ordinary metrics query therefore measures retained traffic. Grafana’s release-note example says that at 10% sampling, { } | rate() reports about 50 spans per second when the unsampled rate is 500 spans per second.

Tempo 3.1 adds the experimental with(extrapolate=true) hint. It uses sampling probability recorded in span metadata to estimate the underlying unsampled count or rate. Put the hint at the end of the metrics query:

Calculate an extrapolated error fraction
Metrics arithmetic allows the numerator and denominator to be expressed in one TraceQL query. The release notes provide this sampled-error example:
({status=error} | rate()) / ({} | rate()) with(extrapolate=true)The division produces an error fraction from the extrapolated error rate and total rate. The same operators can form other ratios, differences, sums, or products without fetching separate results and joining them in application code.

Faster metrics reads with span-only fetching
For metrics queries on vParquet5 blocks, the span-only fetch path is enabled by default. In Grafana’s warmed { } | rate() comparison, the path completed in slightly more than half the time of the same path with span-only fetching disabled. Grafana’s sampling documentation, accessed October 16, 2026, describes improvements of two to four times for heavy queries such as { } | rate(); actual gains depend on data, hardware, and query shape.

An operator can disable span-only fetching for a tenant with metrics_spanonly_fetch: false. It can also be disabled for one query with with(spanonly_fetch=false), but Tempo requires the documented unsafe-query-hint setting to be enabled before that per-query override is accepted. Leave the default enabled unless a specific query or compatibility issue requires the slower path.

Storage and upgrade compatibility
Tempo 3.1 writes new blocks as vParquet5 by default and continues to read existing vParquet4 and vParquet3 blocks. An upgrade therefore does not require an immediate rewrite of historical data. Sampling extrapolation still has a data-format boundary: vParquet3 queries ignore extrapolate=true, while vParquet4 and vParquet5 can use it when the spans contain sampling-probability metadata.
Other operational improvements in 3.1
- Kafka authentication and TLS configuration are improved, with support for additional Kafka-compatible backends.
- Service-graph topology detection is more robust under heavy sampling.
- The metrics-generator and service-graph components use less overhead.
- Optional span pruning is available for trace-by-ID v2.
- Experimental trace-comparison tools are included.
A practical upgrade sequence
- Upgrade the Tempo binary and verify that all schedulers and workers report version 3.1 before scheduling any windowed redaction.
- Confirm block-format behavior: new writes will be vParquet5, while existing vParquet3 and vParquet4 data remains readable.
- Run the redaction selector with
--dry-run, inspect the match count, and only then remove the flag. - Check that spans contain sampling-probability metadata and that the target blocks are vParquet4 or vParquet5 before relying on extrapolated metrics.
- Validate dashboards that use arithmetic expressions, then compare representative metrics-query latency with the default span-only path enabled.
- Review Kafka security settings and service-graph behavior if those components are part of the deployment.
What operators should expect
The release makes sensitive-data cleanup more practical because selectors replace manual trace-ID collection, but the scheduler-worker rollout rule is strict for bounded jobs. It also makes sampled rates more useful for capacity and reliability analysis, provided the stored sampling metadata and block format support extrapolation. Finally, vParquet5 becomes the forward-looking write format without breaking reads of vParquet3 or vParquet4 history.
