For U.S. astronomy, astrophysics, and physics graduate applications, start with research fit, then work backward from each program’s deadline to prepare tailored materials, arrange strong recommendations, and verify current exam and funding rules. Astrobites’ August 19, 2026 guide frames a PhD as a substantial commitment—about five to seven years, by its estimate—so the decision is about more than getting admitted: it is also about whether the research, finances, and day-to-day setting fit your goals.
Is graduate research the right next step?
Before building an application list, consider whether you want a career that involves sustained, open-ended research and whether a multi-year graduate commitment fits your personal plans and finances. A PhD is not the only route to advanced study: research master’s programs may suit some goals, but their funding patterns can differ substantially from doctoral programs.
Astrobites’ five-to-seven-year estimate is a broad framing, not a promise about how long a particular student will take. Ask programs about their degree structure and expected milestones, and consider how the time commitment fits your intended career and other obligations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow should you choose programs?
Build the list around the research you hope to do and the people who might advise it. Astronomy and astrophysics faculty may be based in a standalone astronomy department, a physics department, or across both; searching only for departments with “astronomy” in the name can miss relevant options.

Astrobites suggests about a dozen schools as general list-building advice, not a universal target. A useful list is one you can explain in terms of fit and realistically complete applications for.
- Research fit: Identify faculty whose work connects to your interests, and check whether they advise graduate students.
- Program structure: Review the curriculum, degree requirements, and whether the program is a PhD or research master’s.
- Practical fit: Weigh location and personal circumstances alongside academic interests; consider whether you can imagine living there for the duration of the program.
- Application feasibility: Confirm the current cycle’s deadline, materials, exam policy, fees, and waiver process before investing time in an application.
What application materials should you prepare?
Requirements vary by university, so use each program’s current admissions page as the final authority. Astrobites describes these as common components:
- Statement of purpose: Often one or two pages, according to the guide. Explain your research interests, relevant preparation, and why the particular program is a good match. Tailor the statement to each school rather than sending an unchanged generic version.
- Personal history statement: Some programs request a separate statement. Check whether it is required and how the program distinguishes it from the statement of purpose.
- Recommendation letters: Ask people who can speak concretely about your research, skills, and character. Research mentors can be especially well placed to describe your work.
- CV and transcripts: Prepare an up-to-date CV and request official transcripts if the program requires them.
- Program-specific forms: Check for additional questions, uploads, or submission steps in each application portal.
How to ask for recommendation letters
- Approach potential recommenders well before the deadlines and ask whether they can write a strong letter.
- Give each person the relevant deadlines, program list, submission instructions, and enough context to discuss your work accurately.
- As deadlines approach, check the portals and send courteous reminders to writers whose letters are still outstanding.
A recommender’s familiarity with your work matters: choose people able to give specific examples, rather than selecting only by title or seniority.

Do you need the GRE or Physics GRE?
Check the admissions page for every program and application cycle. Astrobites’ August 2026 guide characterizes the general GRE as very rarely required or accepted by U.S. physics, astronomy, and astrophysics programs, and the Physics GRE as relatively rarely required or accepted by astronomy programs. It also notes that policies change. Those broad descriptions are not substitutes for a department’s current rule.
For each exam, determine whether the program requires it, recommends it, accepts it optionally, or does not accept it. Check whether scores must arrive by the deadline and whether the program specifies a testing date or reporting method. If an exam is not part of the application, relevant advanced coursework, research experience, and detailed recommendation letters can provide other evidence of preparation, as Astrobites advises.
How much can applications cost?
Application expenses can add up across programs. The figures below are estimates reported by Astrobites in its 2026 guide, not independently verified current prices. The guide gives the GRE and TOEFL amounts as of fall 2026; exam fees, score-report charges, and application fees can change, so confirm the current amount and rules before registering or submitting.

Can you get an application fee waiver?
Possibly. Astrobites notes that programs may use different waiver rules, including financial-need criteria, GPA thresholds, lotteries, or early-application deadlines. Check each school’s instructions and ask the admissions office if the process is unclear. A waiver at one university does not establish eligibility at another.
What should you check in a funding offer?
Astrobites says fully funded support is typical for reputable STEM PhD programs, but applicants should evaluate the written offer rather than assume that every program or student receives the same terms. The guide advises that a PhD offer should cover tuition, health insurance, and a stipend; support may come through a teaching assistantship, research assistantship, institutional funding, or an external fellowship.

Compare the terms that determine what the offer is worth in practice:
- Whether tuition and required fees are covered, and for how long.
- Health-insurance coverage and any costs or conditions that remain your responsibility.
- Stipend amount, duration, and the conditions for continuing support.
- Assistantship workload and its effect on time available for research.
- Local living costs and any personal obligations the stipend must cover.
Research master’s programs are more often unfunded, according to the guide. If you are considering one, establish the full cost and available support before comparing it with a funded PhD offer. A stipend also has an opportunity cost: weigh the training and career value against the income and time you would give up elsewhere.
Should you apply for fellowships?
External fellowships can be another funding route, but eligibility, award terms, deadlines, and interactions with a university offer depend on the specific program. Astrobites lists the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP), the DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellowship, and the Hertz Fellowship as examples; check each provider’s current rules before deciding whether to apply.

The guide reports a GRFP stipend of $37,000 per year for three years and describes a 2026 policy update under which applicants may apply in their undergraduate senior year or first year of graduate school, but not their second year. These are guide-reported details, not a substitute for the current official solicitation. Verify the award amount, eligibility, application window, and any restrictions directly with the fellowship provider.
When should you do each part of the application?
Astrobites gives the following planning sequence. Use it as a working calendar, then replace its general timing with the exact dates and instructions published by each program and fellowship.
| When | Work to do |
|---|---|
| August–September | Identify programs, contact potential recommenders, consider fellowship applications, and schedule any required exams early. |
| October | Draft the statement of purpose, research school-specific details, and complete fellowship applications if applicable. |
| November | Remind recommenders and bring statements and the CV close to final. |
| December | Track each submission deadline and follow up with recommenders. The guide says deadlines are often around December 15, but individual dates vary. |
| December–February | Watch for interviews; not all programs interview. |
| February–April | Monitor for admissions decisions, which the guide says commonly begin arriving during this period. |
| April | Look for fellowship outcomes and compare offers. The guide says the decision deadline is usually mid-April. |
Astrobites identifies April 15 as the date in a national agreement for accepting or declining admission with financial support. Confirm whether that agreement applies to your offer and follow the university’s written instructions; do not assume all offers or circumstances are covered by the same date.

How to make the final decision
Once you have offers, compare the actual research opportunity and written support terms—not just department reputation or stipend figures in isolation. Revisit adviser fit, program requirements, location, personal constraints, funding duration and conditions, insurance, workload, and local living costs. If an offer’s terms are unclear, ask the department for clarification before you accept.
