Buy now only when your current graphics card is blocking a need you have today and the exact replacement is fairly priced, compatible, and sold with acceptable returns. If your existing GPU still delivers the resolution, frame rate, and software features you need, waiting is sensible—but it is an option, not a promise of lower prices. October 2026 tracking shows a market with major model-level differences rather than one uniform “high” or “low” price.

What GPU prices look like right now

Two October 12, 2026 snapshots illustrate why a single market-wide answer is misleading. Videocardprices.com reported a GPU Price Index of 94.0. In that tracker’s basket, the mean of each included card’s cheapest live street price divided by its launch MSRP came to 6.0% below launch MSRP. The basket contained 22 of 28 tracked GPUs; six were excluded because they lacked either a published launch MSRP or a live listing. This is a tracker-defined average, not a weighted measure of every GPU sale and not evidence that every desirable model is discounted.

The same index shows how widely individual cards can diverge:

Model Cheapest observed street price Launch MSRP Difference from MSRP
GeForce RTX 5090 $6,300 $1,999 +215.2%
GeForce RTX 5080 $1,489.99 $999 +49.1%
GeForce RTX 5070 $749.99 $549 +36.6%
Radeon RX 9070 XT $720 $599 +20.2%
Radeon RX 7600 $264.99 $269 -1.5%

These are dated observations from that tracker, not guaranteed prices from every seller. A flagship can remain dramatically above MSRP while an entry-level card is near its launch price. There is also no official consumer-affordability statistic in the available evidence that proves GPUs are universally unaffordable; the figures are market-tracker and editorial observations.

Tom’s Hardware updated its United States GPU price tracker on the same date, listing lowest available prices for recent NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel models. It warns that a retailer page can switch to a third-party seller, so the seller shown beside a price matters. Its list and the videocardprices.com index use different included products and formulas; they should be read as separate snapshots, not averaged into a new market number.

Use your current card as the starting point

The upgrade decision is primarily about a performance shortfall, not a calendar. Write down what is failing before looking at a new model.

Identify the task that is blocked

  • For gaming, note the games, resolution, refresh rate, graphics preset, ray-tracing use, and whether stutter or low one-percent lows are the problem.
  • For creative or compute work, identify the application, project size, video-encoding format, render time, and memory errors that occur now.
  • For display upgrades, check whether the current card can drive the planned monitor at its native resolution and refresh rate.

If a game or workload is materially blocked and a replacement can deliver the required improvement, buying now has a clear benefit. If you are merely curious about a faster card while the current one meets your targets, waiting preserves money and keeps you from paying a premium for performance you do not yet use.

Quantify the improvement you actually need

Define a target such as “stable 1440p at my monitor’s refresh rate” or “finish this export without running out of video memory.” Then compare benchmark results for that resolution and workload. A model number alone does not tell you whether the gain will be visible in your games or software.

How to judge whether today’s price is fair

Compare the exact board you can buy—not just a series name—with three reference points: its launch MSRP, a documented recent low, and the total checkout cost including tax and shipping. The index’s 94.0 value cannot tell you whether a specific high-demand card is fairly priced.

Check What to record Why it matters
Exact model GPU, board partner, memory capacity, cooler, and connector layout Different versions of the same GPU can have different prices, dimensions, noise, and power limits.
Current total Item price, tax, shipping, and any required accessories A headline price can understate the amount charged at checkout.
Launch MSRP The manufacturer’s launch reference for that model Shows the premium or discount relative to the original positioning, but does not guarantee current availability.
Recent low A dated, verifiable low for the same model and region Shows whether today’s listing is unusually high even if it is below MSRP.
Seller terms Who sells and ships it, condition, warranty, and return window A low third-party listing can carry more risk than a slightly higher listing from an authorized seller.

Do not treat MSRP as a guaranteed “good deal.” A card can be below MSRP yet poor value if a newer competitor delivers substantially more performance or memory at a similar total cost. Conversely, a modest premium may be rational when the card solves an immediate problem and alternatives are unavailable.

Compare performance, features, and memory—not just FPS

Tom’s Hardware’s current guide explicitly advises looking beyond raw frame-rate graphs. Build a comparison around the software features your workload uses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resolution and game settings

Use results measured at your target resolution and settings. A card that is excellent at 1080p may not provide the same experience at 1440p or 4K, especially when textures, ray tracing, or high refresh rates increase memory and rendering demands. Check the games you actually play rather than relying on a single aggregate ranking.

Ray tracing, upscaling, and frame generation

Record whether each candidate supports the ray-tracing quality, upscaling mode, and frame-generation feature you want. These technologies can change perceived smoothness and image quality, so two cards with similar native FPS can feel different in the same title. Software support and driver maturity are part of the product, not optional extras.

Encoding and professional software

If you stream, edit video, or use GPU-accelerated applications, compare encoder support and application compatibility. Gaming benchmarks alone cannot establish export speed or stability in your particular program.

VRAM capacity

Check the memory requirement for your target resolution, texture settings, mods, and workloads. Insufficient VRAM can force lower settings or cause stutter even when the core GPU is fast enough. The cited buying guides discuss VRAM and higher-resolution play, but the appropriate capacity depends on your software and settings; do not infer it from the model tier alone.

Verify that the card fits and runs in your system

A fast card is not an upgrade if your computer cannot physically or electrically support it. Before ordering, verify the exact manufacturer specifications for the chosen board.

  • Power supply: Check the card’s recommended wattage, required power connectors, and whether your supply has the correct native cables. Avoid relying on overloaded adapters.
  • Case clearance: Measure available length, height, and thickness, including space occupied by adjacent expansion slots and front radiators or drive cages.
  • Platform balance: An older or entry-level CPU can limit frame rates at lower resolutions. Confirm that the rest of the system can use the new GPU’s capability.
  • Display connections: Ensure the card has outputs for your monitors and supports their resolution and refresh requirements.
  • Operating-system and application support: Check driver support for the programs and features you rely on.

These checks must be made against the exact board-partner model. A specification for a reference design does not prove that a longer, thicker factory-overclocked version will fit your case.

Check the listing before paying

Price trackers can lead to retailer pages that change sellers. On the product page, confirm:

  1. The seller and shipper are clearly identified and have a verifiable business history.
  2. The item is new or refurbished exactly as described, with no open-box condition hidden in a menu.
  3. The warranty is provided by the manufacturer or an authorized channel and applies in your region.
  4. The return period, restocking fee, return shipping responsibility, and procedures for defective hardware are stated.
  5. The model number, memory size, connector arrangement, and included accessories match the card you researched.
  6. The final checkout total remains acceptable after tax and shipping.

Save the listing details and order confirmation. If the retailer switches to a third-party seller or changes the condition before checkout, reassess rather than assuming the original tracker price still applies.

When buying now is the rational choice

Buy now when all of the following are true:

  • Your current GPU is preventing a present task, game, or display upgrade from meeting a defined target.
  • You have compared benchmarks at your resolution and settings and can explain the expected improvement.
  • The exact card’s total price is defensible against its launch MSRP, recent lows, and competing models.
  • VRAM, features, power, connectors, dimensions, and CPU balance fit your system.
  • The seller, warranty, and return terms are acceptable.

One current comparison point is the Radeon RX 9070 GRE. Tom’s Hardware’s October 2026 gaming-card guide describes it as an unusual option near its suggested price and a strong 1080p/1440p candidate in that guide’s editorial assessment. That is a dated reviewer recommendation, not a universal best buy or proof of a live listing. If you investigate it, verify the exact board, price, stock, seller, warranty, and returns; do not assume every version has the same value.

When waiting is the better choice

Wait when your current card already meets your targets, when the available replacement carries a large model-specific premium, or when your system needs a platform, power-supply, or monitor change before a GPU would help. Waiting also makes sense if you are unwilling to accept the return or seller risk attached to the cheapest listing.

Waiting has uncertainty. The available 2026 market analysis does not establish a reliable future price drop or a firm next-generation launch date, and future specifications and prices remain speculative. A later purchase could be cheaper, more capable, unchanged, or delayed. Set a review date and monitor the exact model rather than waiting indefinitely for a prediction to come true.

A practical waiting plan

  1. Keep a record of your current card’s performance and the specific problem you want solved.
  2. Track the exact replacement’s street price, not only a family-level index.
  3. Watch for a listing that meets your preset total-price and seller requirements.
  4. Recheck your case, PSU, and monitor plans before ordering, because other upgrades can change the right GPU choice.
  5. Buy when the need, price, and system fit align; otherwise continue using the current card.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Using a market average as a personal price target

An index is useful for context but hides model differences. Use the card-specific observations and your own region’s checkout price.

Comparing launch MSRP with an unrelated variant

Match memory capacity and board design when comparing prices. A premium cooler or factory-overclocked model is not identical to the launch reference card.

Choosing by model hierarchy alone

Check game and application benchmarks, feature support, VRAM, and power draw. A higher tier is not automatically better value for your resolution.

Ignoring the seller because the price is low

Confirm who ships the card and what happens if it arrives damaged or fails. A small saving is not worthwhile if the warranty or return path is unclear.

Assuming a future launch will fix the market

No cited source guarantees a launch date or discount. Treat a future generation as an uncertain option, not a scheduled solution.

A concise decision checklist

  • What exact task or game is limited today?
  • What resolution, settings, refresh rate, or application result do you need?
  • What is the total price of the exact model, including tax and shipping?
  • How does that price compare with launch MSRP and a documented recent low?
  • Do benchmarks cover your games or software, not just a generic ranking?
  • Are VRAM, ray tracing, upscaling, frame generation, and encoding features suitable?
  • Will your PSU, connectors, case, CPU, and displays support the card?
  • Who sells and ships it, and what are the warranty and return terms?
  • Would waiting merely preserve optionality, or is it causing a real cost or missed use now?

If the answers show an immediate bottleneck and a defensible exact-model deal, upgrade now. If not, keep the current GPU and revisit prices without assuming that the next generation or a discount is guaranteed.
