Short answer: A specialized GPU cloud can have the lowest headline rate, but AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud often win on capacity controls, networking, storage, identity, compliance, and support. The cheapest GPU-hour is not necessarily the cheapest completed training run. Compare the full run cost, the probability that your cluster starts on schedule, interruption and recovery behavior, data movement, and the engineering time required to operate the job.

What you are really comparing

AI-training infrastructure is not a simple price-per-GPU contest. A training run succeeds only when the required GPUs are available at the same time, connected by a suitable network, supplied with data quickly enough, and recoverable when a machine disappears. The useful metric is therefore effective cost per completed run, not the advertised hourly GPU rate.

A practical calculation is:

Effective run cost = compute + host CPU/RAM + attached storage + object-storage operations + network transfer + orchestration and monitoring + idle allocation time + engineering and recovery cost.

Two providers can quote similar GPU prices while producing very different totals. A low-cost instance that waits 18 hours for capacity, or loses a day of work to an interruption, may be more expensive than a higher-priced reservation that starts immediately and runs continuously.

Headline price versus completed-work price

  • Headline compute: the GPU or instance rate shown by the provider.
  • Utilization: the percentage of paid time spent doing useful training rather than waiting, provisioning, downloading data, or recovering.
  • Failure overhead: checkpoint writes, restart time, recomputation, and operator intervention after eviction or hardware failure.
  • Data-path cost: storage reads, inter-zone traffic, internet egress, and copying a dataset between clouds.
  • Capacity value: the cost of missing a launch window, a deadline, or a coordinated multi-node run.

For a short, restartable experiment, an interruptible instance can be economically sensible. For a 10,000-GPU-hour distributed run with a fixed deadline, a capacity guarantee can be worth more than a large discount.

How pricing models affect reliability

Cloud providers sell different levels of access assurance. The labels vary, but the underlying trade-off is consistent: flexible capacity is cheaper and less certain; committed or dedicated capacity costs more and is easier to schedule.

Access model Typical price position Capacity behavior Best use Main risk
On-demand Standard published rate Best effort unless paired with a reservation or capacity product Interactive work, changing schedules, and jobs that can wait The requested SKU or region may be unavailable when you need it
Spot or preemptible Deep discount Provider can reclaim the machine Checkpointed experiments, sweeps, and fault-tolerant pipelines Eviction can stop the job and discard work since the last checkpoint
Committed use Lower unit rate in exchange for a term Improves economics but does not automatically guarantee a particular GPU at a particular time Predictable baseline demand Unused commitment and changing hardware needs
Standard reservation Usually above the cheapest flexible option Very high assurance for the reserved configuration, subject to provider terms Scheduled production training and known cluster sizes Paying for capacity that is idle or no longer suitable
Future reservation or capacity block Quoted or market-based reservation price Capacity is arranged for a defined future window Large, tightly coupled jobs with a fixed start date Commitment, cancellation terms, and inflexible timing
Dedicated or bare metal Often the highest total price Exclusive hardware with the strongest operational control Compliance-heavy, latency-sensitive, or critical workloads Higher cost and more responsibility for the software stack

Google Cloud explicitly classifies Spot as best effort and preemptible, on-demand as best effort, and standard or future reservations as very-high-assurance options. Its documentation also describes Spot as suitable for fault-tolerant workloads because it can be preempted at any time.

Google Cloud: clear pricing examples and several assurance levels

Published T4 example

Google Cloud’s current pricing page, accessed in 2026, lists the NVIDIA T4 GPU component at $0.35 per GPU-hour on demand, $0.22 per GPU-hour with a one-year commitment, and $0.16 per GPU-hour with a three-year commitment. These are GPU-component figures, not the complete VM price. CPU, memory, boot and persistent disks, networking, and other services must be added.

Google Cloud T4 option GPU price per hour Qualification
On demand $0.35 Published GPU-component rate; no long-term commitment
One-year commitment $0.22 Requires a one-year commitment; GPU component only
Three-year commitment $0.16 Requires a three-year commitment; GPU component only

For scale, eight T4 GPUs would represent $2.80 per hour at the published on-demand GPU-component rate before the rest of the VM and data-path charges. That multiplication is only an illustration; it is not an eight-GPU instance quote.

Spot and Flex-start

Google says Spot VMs can be discounted by up to 60–91%, depending on the machine and conditions, but they may be stopped or deleted with 30 seconds’ notice. The upper end of that range is not a universal discount for every GPU, region, or date. A training system using Spot needs frequent, durable checkpoints and an automated way to reacquire capacity.

Flex-start is a practical middle option for checkpointed jobs that can tolerate delayed placement. It can make sense when the team wants a lower-cost launch without treating a long uninterrupted run as guaranteed. Reservations for clustered training

Google distinguishes ordinary GPU workloads from clustered GPUs for tightly coupled training. Standard reservations provide very high assurance, while future reservations are intended for large-scale clustered training with exclusive access during the reservation period. They are appropriate when all workers must start together and the cost of waiting or partial placement is high.

Choose the assurance level from the schedule backward:

  • Use Spot for restartable sweeps and experiments with no hard completion time.
  • Use on-demand or Flex-start when the job can tolerate delay but needs a better chance of obtaining capacity.
  • Use a standard reservation for recurring production demand that must be present.
  • Use a future reservation when a large cluster has a known launch window and exclusive placement matters.

AWS: capacity blocks for large distributed jobs

AWS offers EC2 Capacity Blocks for ML for predictable access to accelerated instances in UltraClusters. AWS states that a block can reserve one to 64 instances, for up to six months, booked up to eight weeks in advance. The product is designed for high-throughput distributed training, where a coordinated group of machines is more useful than a cheap but fragmented supply of individual GPUs.

This is a different purchase from simply launching on-demand instances. A capacity block addresses the calendar and cluster-placement problem: the buyer specifies a future period and a size, and the provider places the instances in an UltraCluster designed for distributed workloads. Read the current offer carefully for the exact instance type, duration, start time, cancellation rules, and pricing.

AWS is especially attractive when the training stack already depends on its storage, networking, identity, scheduling, monitoring, or enterprise support. Those integrations can reduce engineering work and simplify security reviews. They do not eliminate the need to price object storage, inter-zone traffic, internet egress, and any managed training or orchestration services.

When discussing the product, NVIDIA vice president Ian Buck said: “With AWS’s new EC2 Capacity Blocks for ML, the world’s AI companies can now rent H100 not just one server at a time but at a dedicated scale uniquely available on AWS—enabling them to quickly and cost-efficiently train large language models and run inference in the cloud exactly when they need it.” The quotation describes the product’s intended scale; it is not a guarantee of availability for every customer, region, or GPU generation.

Azure: potentially large Spot savings, but verify the exact SKU

A 2025 Cast AI report studied AWS p4d.24xlarge instances with eight NVIDIA A100 GPUs from January 2024 through February 2025. In its analogous on-demand comparison, the report found Google 28% cheaper than AWS and Azure 18% cheaper than AWS. For the tested workloads and GPU types, it reported average Spot discounts of approximately 90% for Azure, 67% for Google, and 66% for AWS.

Those figures are directional, not a universal Azure price list or reliability ranking. They cover a defined study configuration and period. Spot pricing, inventory, eviction frequency, quotas, and regional availability change. An Azure estimate should use the exact GPU SKU, region, VM size, disk configuration, network path, and eviction behavior that the training job will use.

The practical implication is that Azure Spot may be compelling for workloads with robust checkpointing and flexible completion dates. It is a poor fit for a job that cannot be restarted or that must hold a synchronized multi-node allocation without interruption.

Specialized GPU clouds and neoclouds

Specialized GPU clouds generally focus on accelerated compute rather than a broad catalog of enterprise services. ITPro describes the GPU-as-a-service market as spanning on-demand, reserved, Spot, and dedicated or bare-metal models. The advantage can be access to a wider mix of GPUs, shorter commitments, or a lower headline rate. The trade-off is that the customer may need to build more of the reliability and data-management layer.

Where a specialist can win

  • Short-lived projects that do not justify a one- or three-year commitment.
  • Hardware combinations that are scarce or awkward to obtain from a general-purpose cloud.
  • Teams willing to automate provisioning, checkpointing, failover, and monitoring.
  • Workloads whose data can be staged near the provider and do not require frequent cross-cloud movement.

What to verify before signing

  • Uptime and replacement: published history, hardware-failure replacement targets, and what happens when a GPU fails mid-run.
  • Network topology: GPU-to-GPU bandwidth, latency, oversubscription, and whether the advertised interconnect spans the whole cluster.
  • Storage: throughput, IOPS, durability, replication, snapshot behavior, and charges for high-performance scratch space.
  • Eviction policy: notice period, checkpoint expectations, automatic restart support, and whether replacement capacity is actually guaranteed.
  • Security and residency: encryption, identity integration, audit logs, patching responsibility, certifications, and the countries in which data and support personnel operate.
  • Exit cost: export bandwidth, image portability, dataset movement, contract termination, and the time needed to reproduce the environment elsewhere.
  • Support: response targets for a failed cluster, escalation path, and whether support staff understand distributed training.

ITPro also cautions that dedicated or bare-metal capacity is usually the safest and most expensive option for compliance-heavy or critical workloads. Its analyst Mazin warned: “Right now, companies are locking themselves into multi-year GPUaaS contracts at peak market prices just to support brute-force AI.” The warning is about contract timing and demand risk: a long commitment can protect access while leaving the buyer exposed if utilization, hardware preferences, or market prices change.

Reliability is more than avoiding eviction

Capacity assurance

Ask whether the provider is promising a price, a reservation, a placement window, or merely permission to request an instance. A reservation or capacity block can address the start-time problem. A Spot discount does not. For distributed training, confirm that the provider can place all workers together rather than supplying a few machines at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interruption and recovery

Measure the work lost per interruption. If checkpoints are written every 10 minutes and a restart takes five minutes, an eviction may cost roughly 15 minutes plus queue time. If checkpoints are written once per day, the same event can erase many hours. Store checkpoints outside the ephemeral boot disk, test restoration, and automate job resubmission.

Network fit

Data-parallel and model-parallel training can spend much of their time exchanging gradients or activations. Dense placement and low-latency, high-throughput interconnects matter more as the cluster grows. A cheaper GPU in separate zones can lose its advantage through synchronization overhead and inter-zone transfer charges.

Storage and data movement

Keep frequently read training data close to the GPUs when possible. Include initial dataset staging, repeated reads, checkpoint writes, replication, and final model export in the estimate. Moving a large corpus from one cloud to another can erase months of compute savings, especially when internet egress is charged.

Operational recovery

Reliability includes observability and human response. Confirm that metrics, logs, GPU health, job state, and quota failures are visible to the team. A provider with a slightly higher rate may still be cheaper if it reduces the time engineers spend diagnosing placement, storage, or networking failures.

Region and availability can dominate the quote

The Cast AI report found that selecting a cost-efficient AWS region and availability zone could reduce cost by as much as six times compared with defaulting to us-east-1a in its study configuration. That result demonstrates the scale of regional variation; it is not a standing six-times discount.

Prices and inventory change, so obtain a current quote for the exact GPU, region, host configuration, storage, network path, and commitment term. Check quotas before modeling a launch, and test whether the required number of GPUs can be placed simultaneously. A region with a low nominal price is not economical if quota approval or capacity takes longer than the project allows.

How to compare providers using one training run

  1. Define the workload: GPU model, number of GPUs, expected GPU-hours, CPU and memory needs, dataset size, checkpoint interval, and target completion date.
  2. Separate cluster types: price a single-GPU experiment, a multi-GPU node, and the full distributed topology. Do not assume that a single-GPU rate scales linearly to a tightly coupled cluster.
  3. Request three access cases: best-effort on-demand, interruptible Spot or preemptible, and assured capacity such as a reservation or capacity block.
  4. Add non-GPU charges: VM host resources, boot and persistent disks, high-performance scratch storage, object-storage requests, snapshots, inter-zone traffic, internet egress, monitoring, and orchestration.
  5. Model utilization: include queue time, provisioning, data staging, synchronization inefficiency, and idle time while workers wait for the slowest task.
  6. Model failures: use the planned checkpoint interval and measured restart procedure to estimate lost work. If you do not yet have measurements, produce a sensitivity range rather than pretending the failure cost is zero.
  7. Price the calendar: include the cost of missing a deadline, holding an unused reservation, or extending a commitment after the project changes.
  8. Run a small validation: test the actual image, drivers, storage path, distributed communication, checkpoint restore, and monitoring before buying a long block of capacity.
  9. Compare exit options: document how to copy data, rebuild images, export checkpoints, and move the training job if the provider cannot supply the next run.

Decision guide by workload

Workload situation Usually suitable starting point Why Controls required
Hyperparameter sweeps with independent trials Spot or preemptible capacity Individual trials can be retried without blocking the whole experiment Frequent checkpoints, retry queue, maximum retry cost
Interactive fine-tuning or development On-demand capacity Fast access is often worth more than a deep discount Automatic shutdown and budget alerts
Scheduled multi-node training Reservation or capacity block All workers need to start together and remain available Validated topology, quota approval, checkpointing
Large-scale training with a fixed launch window Future reservation or dedicated allocation Calendar certainty and exclusive placement reduce deadline risk Contract review, cancellation plan, tested recovery
Compliance-sensitive production training Dedicated or strongly assured capacity Isolation, residency, support, and predictable operations dominate price Security controls, audit evidence, replacement SLA
Short project with unusual GPU requirements Specialized GPU cloud after validation Hardware variety or short terms may outweigh broad-cloud integration Topology, support, data exit, and provider-failure plan

Answers to the questions buyers ask most

Is a dedicated GPU cloud cheaper than AWS?

It can be cheaper on the GPU line item, particularly for short-term or specialized hardware, but there is no universal winner. Include storage, network transfer, management, idle capacity, support, and the cost of recovering from failures. A general-purpose cloud may produce a lower completed-run cost when its integrated services reduce engineering and data movement.

Are Azure or Google Spot GPUs more reliable than AWS Spot?

The cited Cast AI benchmark reports different average discounts, not a universal reliability ranking: approximately 90% for Azure, 67% for Google, and 66% for AWS across its tested configurations. Spot is interruptible on every provider. Reliability depends on the exact GPU, region, quota, eviction behavior, checkpoint design, and replacement process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you reserve capacity for a long training run?

Reserve when a missed start window or interrupted cluster would cost more than the reservation premium, and when the GPU count and schedule are sufficiently predictable. Do not reserve solely because a discount looks attractive if utilization or hardware requirements may change.

How much does an H100 or A100 cost per hour?

The supplied figures do not establish a single current H100 or A100 hourly price. Rates vary by provider, instance shape, region, purchase model, and date. Obtain a quote for the complete instance and data path rather than comparing an isolated GPU number.

Which provider can guarantee GPU capacity when training starts?

No ordinary best-effort request can promise that outcome. Use an explicit reservation, future reservation, capacity block, or dedicated agreement whose terms state the GPU type, quantity, placement, start window, and remedy if capacity is unavailable. Confirm the contract rather than relying on a marketing label.

A practical recommendation

Start with the provider that matches the failure tolerance of the job. Use Spot for checkpointed, interruptible work; use on-demand when schedule flexibility matters; and use reservations, future reservations, capacity blocks, or dedicated capacity when a coordinated cluster must be ready at a defined time. Then compare at least one specialized GPU cloud against one general-purpose provider using the same GPU count, region, storage, network topology, checkpoint policy, and contract duration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For every quote, record the assumptions in one worksheet: GPU and host type, region and zone, expected utilization, checkpoint interval, restart time, storage throughput, egress volume, support level, commitment, and exit path. That worksheet turns a promotional GPU-hour into a defensible estimate of the cost and reliability of finishing the training run.
