There is no single best GPU cloud. The right choice depends on whether you are training a distributed model, fine-tuning one or serving an API. Training rewards memory, fast GPU-to-GPU networking, storage throughput and dependable cluster capacity. Serving rewards low latency, autoscaling, batching efficiency and high utilization. Compare the same GPU, memory, region, billing mode and surrounding infrastructure before treating any hourly quote as cheaper.

Quick answer: match the provider to the workload

Need Usually the strongest fit What to verify
Very large distributed training A hyperscaler such as AWS, Google Cloud or Azure GPU topology, cross-node fabric, quota, reservation terms, storage and restart tooling
Experiments, fine-tuning and batch jobs A focused GPU service such as RunPod or another specialist Current inventory, image support, persistent storage, network performance and queue time
Serverless model inference A GPU provider with managed endpoints, such as RunPod Serverless Cold-start latency, concurrency, autoscaling policy, supported runtimes and per-request cost
Enterprise integration The hyperscaler already used for identity, networking, storage and billing Regional availability, committed-use discounts, governance and data-transfer charges
Lowest nominal GPU rate Often a spot or interruptible configuration Preemption frequency, checkpoint recovery, queueing and the cost of lost work

These are workload tendencies, not a universal ranking. Inventory, quotas, network layout and prices vary by region and account. The prices below are official examples, not independent performance tests.

Training and serving have different bottlenecks

A training cluster repeatedly moves tensors between GPUs, reads large datasets and writes checkpoints. A serving system repeatedly handles user requests, where the slowest request and the cost per generated token matter more than peak cluster size.

Axis Training Serving
Accelerator choice GPU memory capacity, tensor performance, GPU-to-GPU interconnect and multi-GPU topology Throughput per dollar, latency, batching efficiency and supported quantization
Capacity model Reserved or on-demand clusters, distributed-training support and checkpoint storage Autoscaling, serverless versus dedicated endpoints and concurrency limits
Network and data Intra-node bandwidth, cross-node fabric and data locality Client latency, regional placement, ingress and egress charges
Reliability Capacity guarantees, preemption recovery and job-restart tooling Service-level objective, endpoint health, failover and predictable tail latency
Economics GPU-hours plus storage, transfer, idle capacity and reservation discounts Cost per request or token, utilization and scale-to-zero behavior

A cloud can be excellent for one column and awkward for the other. For example, a low hourly GPU rate does not help if a training job waits days for a multi-node allocation, and a large reserved cluster can be wasteful for an endpoint that receives traffic only a few hours a day.

How to compare GPU prices without being misled

GPU-hour prices are configuration-specific. Before comparing two quotes, record every assumption in a small worksheet.

  1. Identify the exact accelerator and memory. An H100, A100, P100 and P4 are different products; even the same GPU family can have different memory capacities and host configurations.
  2. Record the unit of billing. A quote may be per GPU, per virtual machine or per multi-GPU instance. A two-GPU machine priced at one hourly rate is not equivalent to a single-GPU rate.
  3. Fix the region. Regional inventory, taxes, electricity costs and data-transfer routes can change the final bill.
  4. Choose the capacity mode. Separate on-demand, reserved or committed capacity from spot or other interruptible capacity. A spot rate is not a guaranteed replacement for an on-demand rate.
  5. Add the host. Include vCPU, system memory, local NVMe or attached disks, operating-system charges and persistent-volume charges.
  6. Model data movement. Include object-storage reads, checkpoint writes, inter-region transfer and Internet egress. For inference, estimate the traffic leaving the endpoint as well as requests entering it.
  7. Include idle and recovery time. A development pod left running overnight, a cold start and a preempted job that must repeat several hours of work all raise the effective cost.
  8. Recheck immediately before purchase. Provider tables and inventory change. Treat a displayed rate as a dated snapshot, not a permanent price.

A useful comparison is total cost for a defined job or traffic level, not “the cheapest H100.” State GPU model and memory, GPU count, region, operating system, billing mode, storage, network assumptions, taxes and whether the figure is per GPU or per VM.

Provider-by-provider comparison

AWS: integrated infrastructure for large jobs

NVIDIA describes AWS EC2 P5 as an H100-powered option. It also says AWS UltraClusters can scale to 20,000 interconnected H100 GPUs. That combination targets organizations running large distributed training workloads that need a coordinated fabric rather than isolated virtual machines.

AWS is a natural operational fit when your data already resides in its storage services and your team uses its identity, networking, monitoring and billing controls. The trade-off is configuration complexity: quotas, placement, storage design and data-transfer charges can matter as much as the advertised instance rate. Confirm that the exact P5 size and region are available to your account, then test the framework’s distributed-communication path at the scale you plan to use.

Google Cloud: published GPU and spot tables

Google Cloud publishes Compute Engine GPU and spot pricing tables, which makes it useful for a transparent first-pass estimate. Its 2026 GPU pricing page lists an NVIDIA P4 at $0.60 per hour and an NVIDIA P100 at $1.46 per hour. Those are displayed GPU examples from Google Cloud’s 2026 table, not a cross-provider benchmark and not a guarantee that the same price applies in every region.

The same 2026 spot table lists an A3 high-GPU configuration with two H100 GPUs at $12.614730137 per hour, and an A2 Ultra configuration with two A100 GPUs at $5.855755068 per hour. Each number describes the named multi-GPU configuration and billing mode; do not divide or multiply it until you have confirmed how Google defines the unit on the current table.

Azure: a fit for Microsoft-standardized organizations

NVIDIA identifies Azure ND H100 v5 as an H100 virtual-machine offering. Azure is therefore a logical comparison when your organization already standardizes on Microsoft identity, networking, governance or enterprise agreements. The relevant decision is not only the ND H100 v5 rate: compare the complete machine shape, region, reservation or commitment terms, storage and transfer charges with the equivalent deployment elsewhere.

For training, verify the number of GPUs per VM and the interconnect available between VMs. For serving, check regional endpoint placement, autoscaling behavior and how the platform reports GPU utilization so you can detect an endpoint that is paying for idle capacity.

RunPod: separate products for pods, APIs and clusters

RunPod explicitly separates several operating modes. Its product description calls cloud GPU instances “dedicated GPU environments for AI development, training, fine-tuning, batch jobs, and long-running workloads.” Its pricing distinguishes Pods for dedicated instances, Serverless for API inference and Clusters for multi-node jobs.

That separation is useful when the same team moves from an interactive notebook to a repeatable batch job and then to an inference API. A Pod can provide a persistent, directly managed environment; Serverless can add and remove workers around demand; a Cluster addresses multi-node training. Confirm current regional inventory, inter-node networking, storage persistence and image or framework support before assuming that a convenient single-GPU Pod will scale into a suitable training cluster.

CoreWeave and other specialist GPU clouds

NVIDIA cites CoreWeave H100 use for model creation and inference. Specialist GPU clouds generally emphasize direct accelerator access, reservation flexibility and AI-focused operations rather than the breadth of a hyperscaler’s general-purpose services. They can be attractive when your main constraint is obtaining a particular GPU or an AI-oriented environment quickly.

Evaluate specialists with the same checklist used for hyperscalers: actual GPU topology, memory, storage path, network bandwidth, regional placement, support response, capacity guarantees and egress pricing. A focused interface does not by itself establish faster training or a lower total bill.

Choosing a cloud for model training

Start with memory and topology

List the model’s parameter count, precision, optimizer state, activation footprint, batch size and expected context length. Leave headroom for framework overhead and checkpoint staging. If the model needs several GPUs, determine whether they are inside one host or spread across hosts; the latter makes network bandwidth and latency part of the training algorithm’s performance.

Check distributed-training support

Confirm that the provider exposes the communication libraries, drivers and ports your framework requires. Ask whether placement keeps GPUs close together, what cross-node fabric is available and whether the allocation is guaranteed for the full job. A nominally adequate GPU count can still underperform if workers are placed across a congested or slower network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Design storage and recovery before launching

Put training data where workers can read it without unnecessary cross-region transfer. Use fast local or attached storage for active shards and durable storage for checkpoints. Record the exact restart command and checkpoint interval before using spot capacity. A restart plan that has never been tested is not a reliability feature.

Choose capacity mode by the cost of interruption

  • On-demand: appropriate when a deadline, scarce capacity or expensive restart makes predictability more valuable than the lowest rate.
  • Reserved or committed: useful for a steady baseline of GPU demand when the commitment period and utilization are well understood.
  • Spot or interruptible: attractive for checkpointed experiments, preprocessing and elastic workers that can be replaced without losing the job.

Choosing a cloud for LLM inference and other serving

Measure the unit your users pay for

Track cost per request, input token, output token or completed job rather than GPU-hours alone. A larger GPU can win if it serves more concurrent sequences, finishes batches faster or avoids out-of-memory failures. A smaller GPU can win when traffic is sparse and the endpoint can scale to zero.

Set latency and concurrency targets

Define a target for median and tail latency, maximum queue time, concurrent requests and context length. Then test the intended precision and batching configuration. Quantization may reduce memory use, but only the runtime test tells you whether it preserves the required quality and throughput.

Compare dedicated and serverless endpoints

A dedicated endpoint offers predictable warm capacity and can be economical at sustained utilization. A serverless endpoint can scale workers with demand and avoid paying for idle GPUs, but cold starts, model-loading time and concurrency limits may affect interactive traffic. Run a traffic pattern that includes quiet periods and bursts; a constant-load test hides the economics that autoscaling is meant to solve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Place the endpoint near users and data

Regional placement affects client latency and transfer charges. If the model reads a feature store or private database, keep those systems on a low-latency path and verify the provider’s private-network integration. Include egress in the serving budget when responses are large or traffic crosses regions.

When spot GPUs make sense

Spot capacity can materially reduce the displayed GPU rate, but the provider can reclaim it. Use it when the workload is restartable and the expected savings exceed the engineering and lost-progress cost.

  • Checkpoint frequently enough that a preemption loses an acceptable amount of work.
  • Store checkpoints durably outside the reclaimed VM.
  • Automate detection of termination notices and resubmission.
  • Keep a small on-demand capacity floor for the coordinator, metadata service or production endpoint.
  • Test recovery with an intentional shutdown before trusting a long run.
  • Monitor queue time and interruption frequency; a cheap GPU that sits unavailable is not cheap in elapsed project time.

Spot is usually safer for data preparation, hyperparameter sweeps and fault-tolerant workers than for a single, uncheckpointed run or a latency-sensitive production endpoint.

Worked price examples from Google Cloud’s 2026 tables

Suppose you reserve a named two-H100 A3 high-GPU spot configuration for 10 hours. Multiplying the displayed $12.614730137 per hour by 10 gives $126.14730137 before storage, transfer, taxes, host charges or any interrupted work. A 10-hour two-A100 A2 Ultra configuration at the displayed $5.855755068 per hour gives $58.55755068 under the same exclusions.

Those calculations illustrate why the unit matters: they are configuration totals, not proof that one GPU generation is faster or cheaper for your model. The P4 and P100 examples—$0.60 and $1.46 per hour respectively—also cannot be compared meaningfully without knowing memory needs, workload throughput and the rest of the machine. Recheck the live table and your region before using any figure in a purchase decision.

Operational checklist before you commit

  • Write down model size, precision, batch or concurrency target and required memory.
  • Specify GPU model, memory, GPU count, host shape and topology.
  • Choose region and confirm quota and current inventory for that exact configuration.
  • Price on-demand, committed and spot modes separately.
  • Add persistent storage, scratch storage, snapshots, data transfer, egress, taxes and idle time.
  • Benchmark a representative training step or serving trace, including warm-up and tail latency.
  • Test checkpoint restore, worker replacement and endpoint health checks.
  • Set budget alerts and an automatic shutdown policy for development resources.
  • Document how to export data, checkpoints and container images if you need to move providers.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Comparing unlike GPU counts

Symptom: one provider appears half the price. Fix: verify whether each quote is per GPU, per VM or for a multi-GPU machine, then compare equal memory and GPU counts.

Ignoring the network

Symptom: utilization is low during distributed training despite enough GPUs. Fix: inspect interconnect placement, cross-node bandwidth and communication time; a smaller, tightly connected allocation may finish sooner.

Using spot for an unrepeatable job

Symptom: an interruption erases many hours. Fix: move checkpoints to durable storage, automate restart and keep on-demand capacity for irreplaceable stages.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Paying for an idle inference GPU

Symptom: low request volume but a full-time GPU bill. Fix: compare a scale-to-zero or serverless design, while measuring cold starts and queue latency against your service target.

Assuming published price equals delivered performance

Symptom: the lowest hourly quote produces the highest project cost. Fix: benchmark the real model, include data movement and recovery time, and compare cost per completed training step or served token.

A practical decision path

  1. If you need thousands of tightly connected GPUs or deep integration with existing enterprise controls, start with the hyperscaler where your data and identity already live; compare equivalent H100-class configurations and network topology.
  2. If you are experimenting, fine-tuning or running batch jobs, compare a dedicated Pod or similar specialist instance with a hyperscaler VM on total configured cost and current inventory.
  3. If you are exposing an API, compare dedicated and serverless products using the same model, quantization, concurrency, region and traffic trace.
  4. If your workload tolerates interruption, price spot capacity only after you have checkpointing, durable storage and automated recovery.
  5. Choose the provider whose measured cost per completed job or served request meets your latency, reliability and operational requirements—not the provider with the lowest unqualified hourly number.
