The cheapest GPU-hour is rarely the cheapest usable GPU. Compare the complete configuration—GPU count and VRAM, CPU and RAM, storage, region, networking, support, interruption behavior, and expected utilization—before choosing a cloud. Use on-demand capacity when timing and flexibility matter, Spot or preemptible capacity when your workload can restart, and long-term commitments only after checking quota, capacity, minimum spend, and the provider’s exit language. A discounted commitment may lower the rate without reserving a specific zone, and some commitments cannot be cancelled before their end date.

What a GPU cloud quote actually includes

A provider may advertise a GPU-only rate while billing the surrounding virtual machine separately. Google Cloud’s pricing documentation says each GPU adds to the machine-type cost, so a GPU figure alone is not a comparable instance price. Specialist providers may instead publish a complete system configuration, sometimes with distinct on-demand and Spot prices. The two figures can look similar while delivering very different amounts of CPU, memory, local storage, interconnect bandwidth, or operational support.

Build every comparison around the same bill of materials:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • GPU: exact model, memory (VRAM), number of GPUs, interconnect, and whether fractional or MIG-style allocation is supported.
  • Host: vCPU, system RAM, local NVMe or network storage, operating system, and virtualization limits.
  • Location: region and zone, tax or currency treatment, and whether the quoted price applies to North America or another geography.
  • Data path: object-storage fees, snapshots, data ingress and egress, inter-region transfer, and bandwidth charges.
  • Operations: support tier, orchestration, monitoring, image management, license charges, and idle instances left running.
  • Commercial terms: billing granularity, minimum spend, term, payment timing, renewal, price-change rights, and what happens to unused capacity.

Only after these items match should a lower GPU-hour price be treated as a saving.

Published GPU prices you can use as reference points

The following public figures were listed on provider pages accessed on October 18, 2026. They are reference prices, not guarantees of present capacity or a complete workload cost.

Provider and configuration On-demand Committed or Spot rate Important qualification
Google Cloud NVIDIA T4 $0.35 per GPU-hour $0.22 with a one-year commitment; $0.16 with a three-year commitment GPU-only figures; the VM machine type is additional. Commitment prices are agreements, not a promise of zonal capacity.
CoreWeave NVIDIA HGX H100, eight GPUs, North America $49.24 per eight-GPU hour $19.71 per eight-GPU hour on Spot Published system rates; availability and prices can change and must be rechecked when ordering.
CoreWeave NVIDIA HGX H200, eight GPUs, North America $50.44 per eight-GPU hour $20.93 per eight-GPU hour on Spot Published system rates; newer or other configurations may require a sales quote.

Google says resource-based commitments can provide up to a 55% discount from on-demand prices for most GPU types. The exact discount depends on the resource, term, and applicable agreement; it should not be assumed to apply to every GPU or every ancillary charge.

For scale, running one of the eight-GPU H100 systems continuously for an illustrative 730-hour month would make the GPU-system portion about $35,945.20 on demand or $14,388.30 on Spot. The equivalent H200 figures would be about $36,821.20 and $15,278.90. These calculations exclude host, storage, network, support, software, taxes, and any interruption or queue time, so they are not invoices.

Choose a purchasing model by workload risk

On-demand capacity

On-demand instances have no long-term usage commitment and are the simplest way to start. They suit interactive development, uncertain launch dates, short experiments, and production services whose interruption cost exceeds the rate premium. You pay the published rate while the resource runs, but on-demand does not automatically mean that a particular GPU is available in your preferred zone. Quota and regional capacity still apply.

Spot or preemptible capacity

Spot pricing trades certainty for a discount. AWS describes Spot Instances as a cost-effective choice when an application can be flexible about when it runs and can be interrupted. Google describes Spot resources as being provisioned as capacity becomes available and says they “can be preempted at any time.”

Spot is a good fit for distributed training with frequent checkpoints, batch inference, rendering, simulations, hyperparameter sweeps, and development environments that can be recreated. It is a poor fit for an uncheckpointed job, a latency-sensitive endpoint, or a migration that would take hours to restart.

Before using Spot, implement:

  • Frequent checkpoints written to durable, separately billed storage.
  • Automatic detection of termination notices or lost workers.
  • Idempotent job submission and a restart policy that does not duplicate expensive work.
  • A fallback pool of on-demand or reserved GPUs for critical stages.
  • Graceful draining so partial results and logs survive an interruption.

Reserved capacity and commitments

Longer terms can lower the unit price when your baseline demand is predictable. AWS exposes several purchasing mechanisms, including Savings Plans, Reserved Instances, Spot, Capacity Reservations, and Capacity Blocks; each has different eligibility, flexibility, and capacity behavior. Do not treat the word “reserved” as a universal guarantee: a price commitment, a reservation, and a scheduled capacity block solve different problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s resource-based commitment documentation is explicit: “A commitment provides a 1- or 3-year discounted price agreement, but it doesn’t reserve capacity in a specific zone.” A commitment can therefore reduce the rate while still leaving you unable to start the required GPU in the zone you need. Attach an appropriate reservation when firm zonal capacity is a requirement, and confirm that the reservation covers the exact machine shape and GPU count.

Capacity Reservations and Capacity Blocks

A capacity reservation is intended to hold capacity in a defined location, while a Capacity Block or similar scheduled product can target a future window for a large training run. These options can improve start-time certainty but generally reduce flexibility and may impose stricter scheduling or cancellation terms. Use them only after the start date, duration, zone, and minimum GPU count are known.

Availability is a quota and geography problem

GPU inventory is not uniform across a provider’s regions. Google states that GPU devices are available only in specific zones within some regions. A model shown in a global catalog may be unavailable in the zone where your data, customers, or reservation resides.

Check these items before signing an order or promising a launch date:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Region and zone: identify the exact zone, not merely the country or broad region.
  2. Quota: request the required GPU, vCPU, and instance quotas early; approval does not create physical inventory.
  3. Shape compatibility: verify that the requested GPU count, host type, driver, image, and interconnect are offered together.
  4. Partial provisioning: ask what happens if only part of a multi-GPU or multi-node request is available.
  5. Replacement path: obtain the provider’s process and service level for an unavailable or failed node.
  6. Start-date evidence: require a reservation, Capacity Block, or written delivery commitment when a fixed date matters.

A future reservation can still carry partial-provisioning risk if the provider cannot deliver every requested resource. Ask whether the contract permits a smaller allocation, a delayed start, a substitute GPU, or a refund when the full configuration is not delivered.

Normalize offers before comparing them

Use this matrix for every quote. Record “not stated” rather than filling an unknown with an assumption.

Axis Questions to answer
Workload shape Is the use case training, fine-tuning, inference, batch, interactive development, or burst capacity?
GPU SKU What exact model, VRAM, interconnect, fractional or MIG support, and minimum GPU count are included?
Price basis Is the rate on-demand, Spot/preemptible, reserved, one-year, three-year, or tied to negotiated minimum spend?
Capacity certainty Which region and zone apply? What quota, reservation, Capacity Block, queue, waitlist, and replacement SLA exist?
Interruptions Can the instance be preempted? What notice, checkpointing expectation, restart process, and data-preservation behavior apply?
Full cost What are the CPU/RAM, storage, snapshots, ingress, egress, licenses, support, orchestration, and idle-time charges?
Contract What are the term, minimum spend, payment timing, auto-renewal, price-change rights, substitution rights, and audit rights?
Exit Can you cancel, refund, downgrade, transfer, or port the workload? Is migration help available, and what liability cap applies?

Calculate the cost you will actually pay

Start with a monthly scenario rather than a headline rate:

Total cost = GPU and host runtime + storage and snapshots + data transfer + software and support + idle or queued capacity + commitment shortfall.

Model at least three utilization levels: your expected baseline, a low-utilization month, and a peak month. A three-year discount can be more expensive than on-demand if the workload moves, pauses, or needs a different GPU. Include engineering time for checkpointing, failover, and migration; a cheaper interrupted run may cost more in staff time and delayed results.

For Spot, estimate the expected completion cost rather than multiplying the rate by the ideal runtime. Add restart overhead, lost work between checkpoints, probability of interruption, and the cost of maintaining an on-demand fallback. For a reservation or commitment, calculate the amount payable when usage is zero; unused minimums are a liability, not a theoretical saving.

Read commitment and exit clauses before accepting a discount

Google’s public rule for resource-based commitments is unusually direct: “After you purchase a commitment, you can’t cancel or delete it. The commitment remains active until its specified end date.” Treat that as a hard constraint for a Google commitment, not as a negotiable assumption. The Compute Terms Observatory also records AWS reserved capacity as noncancellable and nonrefundable. Enterprise arrangements with specialist providers are often negotiated and unpublished, so the signed contract—not a sales presentation—controls.

Request the order form and governing service terms before committing, then obtain written answers to every item below:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Is the commitment cancellable, refundable, transferable, or exchangeable?
  • Do you pay the minimum even when GPUs are unused, unavailable, or your project is cancelled?
  • Can the provider substitute a different GPU model, host shape, region, or interconnect?
  • Is reserved capacity tied to a particular region or zone, and what happens if that zone cannot deliver?
  • Does the term auto-renew? How much notice is required to prevent renewal?
  • Can prices, taxes, support fees, or egress rates change during the term?
  • Are there termination-for-convenience, termination-for-cause, outage-credit, or service-level remedies?
  • Who owns checkpoints, images, logs, and derived data, and how quickly can they be exported?
  • What data-egress rates and migration assistance apply when you leave?
  • Are minimum GPU quantities, delivery dates, replacement obligations, outage credits, and termination rights written into the signed order?

A discount that cannot be exited can become a stranded-cost problem after a model change, funding cut, merger, regulatory restriction, or capacity failure. Put portability and substitution limits in the commercial document, not only in an email or presentation.

Match the buying model to the workload

Workload Starting choice Protection or condition
Interactive development and prototypes On-demand Stop instances when idle; keep images and data exportable.
Large training run with a fixed date Reservation or Capacity Block, possibly with on-demand backup Confirm zone, quota, full-node delivery, and replacement terms.
Distributed training with frequent checkpoints Spot/preemptible plus a fallback pool Automate restart and preserve checkpoints outside the interruptible pool.
Batch inference or rendering Spot/preemptible or mixed capacity Use a queue, retry failed work, and separate durable output storage.
Production inference with latency targets On-demand or reserved baseline Keep spare capacity and test failover in another zone or provider.
Steady, predictable GPU demand One-year commitment after a utilization review Verify that the GPU model and region will remain suitable; avoid committing the uncertain portion.
Uncertain or rapidly changing demand On-demand with selective Spot bursting Preserve portability and delay a multi-year commitment until usage stabilizes.

A procurement sequence that limits lock-in

  1. Define the minimum acceptable configuration. Write down GPU model, VRAM, GPU count, interconnect, region, start date, runtime window, and interruption tolerance.
  2. Price an identical configuration. Compare on-demand and Spot/preemptible rates across at least two providers, including host and data charges.
  3. Check live capacity. Confirm quota and zone availability. Request a reservation or Capacity Block only when the workload needs firm start capacity.
  4. Model utilization and failure. Calculate baseline, low-use, peak, interruption, restart, and commitment-shortfall scenarios before accepting a one- or three-year term.
  5. Negotiate the order form. Add exit, substitution, portability, egress, service-credit, outage, delivery, and renewal language.
  6. Prove the fallback. Keep a second-provider deployment path, exportable images, documented infrastructure definitions, and checkpoints that can run elsewhere.
  7. Review monthly. Track effective cost per completed training step, inference request, or batch item—not just billed GPU-hours—and revisit commitments when utilization or model requirements change.

Common buying mistakes and how to correct them

Comparing a GPU-only number with a full system

Symptom: one quote looks dramatically cheaper. Fix: add the VM, storage, network, support, and software components, then compare the same GPU count and runtime.

Assuming a commitment reserves a GPU

Symptom: a discounted commitment exists but the required zone cannot start the instance. Fix: separate price commitments from zonal reservations or scheduled capacity and secure the latter when timing is critical.

Putting a restart-sensitive job on Spot

Symptom: interruptions erase hours of work. Fix: checkpoint more often, make jobs resumable, and reserve an on-demand fallback for the non-restartable portion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Signing a minimum before measuring utilization

Symptom: the organization pays for unused GPUs after a project slips. Fix: commit only the measured baseline and leave burst demand on flexible capacity.

Leaving exit rights out of the order form

Symptom: a sales promise conflicts with the governing terms. Fix: make cancellation, transfer, substitution, egress, outage credits, data return, and renewal language explicit in the signed agreement.

Ignoring geography and quota

Symptom: a catalog SKU is visible but cannot be provisioned. Fix: validate the exact region, zone, quota, machine shape, and multi-node availability before announcing a delivery date.

Practical decision rule

Buy on-demand when flexibility and immediate control are worth the premium. Add Spot or preemptible capacity when your software can checkpoint and retry. Use a reservation or Capacity Block for a genuinely fixed start window. Consider a one-year commitment only for the portion of demand you can demonstrate, and treat a three-year commitment as a financial obligation that needs an explicit exit analysis. Never let a headline discount substitute for confirmed capacity, a complete cost model, or signed portability and termination terms.
