When a GPT Image API request is rate-limited, sending it again immediately can make recovery harder: OpenAI says unsuccessful requests count toward per-minute limits. For a temporary 429, wait at least as long as a valid Retry-After header directs; if there is no valid header, use bounded exponential backoff with jitter. First check which limit was reached, because there is no single public GPT Image 2 rate-limit number that applies to every account.

Why immediate retries can keep requests blocked

A 429 response means a relevant rate limit has been reached; it does not mean that another immediate attempt will be accepted. OpenAI notes that unsuccessful requests contribute to per-minute limits, so repeated attempts add more requests while the constraint may still be active. As OpenAI puts it: “Note that unsuccessful requests contribute to your per-minute limit, so continuously resending a request won’t work.” OpenAI’s rate-limit guide

That supports a practical conclusion, not a precise queueing formula: retrying in a tight loop can consume additional capacity and prolong contention, but public guidance does not quantify how much queue buildup a retry causes or say every retry consumes identical resources.

What limit might be stopping image generation?

Rate limits can apply across different dimensions, including requests, tokens, images, daily usage, or endpoint-specific limits. Having capacity remaining in one dimension does not prove that another is available. Check the response headers to identify the relevant request or token limit and its reset information. There is no universal public GPT Image 2 rate-limit value to plug into an application. Image-generation limits depend on the model and usage tier. OpenAI directs developers to check the model information and the Limits page for their account’s current allowance. OpenAI Help Center: Image Generation rate limits

How to retry a temporary rate-limit response

  1. Classify the error. Retry a temporary rate-limit response only after the appropriate wait. If the response points to billing, exhausted quota, authentication, or configuration, fix that issue first; another request will not resolve it.
  2. Honor a valid Retry-After value. Treat it as the minimum delay before another attempt. Add a small random delay (jitter) so multiple workers do not all retry at the same moment.
  3. Back off when there is no usable header. Increase the delay after each failed attempt using exponential backoff, and add jitter. Do not assume a fixed wait works for every account or response.
  4. Bound retries. Set both a maximum number of attempts and a maximum total elapsed time. Once either limit is reached, stop retrying and surface the failure for handling rather than looping indefinitely.
  5. Coordinate application and SDK retries. Check whether your installed SDK already retries eligible 429 or 503 responses. An application retry loop wrapped around SDK retries can multiply attempts. Server-delay behavior can vary with SDK version and configuration, so verify the version and settings you actually deploy.

These steps follow OpenAI’s guidance to use Retry-After where available or exponential backoff otherwise, and to avoid uncontrolled repeat requests. OpenAI’s rate-limit guide

What to log before changing concurrency

Capture the rate-limit headers for requests and tokens, including limit, remaining, and reset values where returned, along with the request ID. These details help distinguish which capacity is exhausted and preserve a useful identifier for support or request tracing. OpenAI API reference: debugging requests

Use those signals before increasing or decreasing worker concurrency. If request capacity is the constraint, reducing synchronized bursts may help avoid repeated collisions; if another limit is exhausted, concurrency changes alone may not address it.
