Short answer: choose the model for the difficulty of the work, not simply because its number is newer. OpenAI’s current guidance places GPT-6.1 Sol on complex coding, research, and computer-use tasks; Astra on the hardest reasoning and scientific work; and Luna on focused, repeatable tasks where speed and cost matter. Earlier GPT-5.6 models can still be the practical choice when they are the option your plan or workspace exposes, when a task is routine, or when compatibility matters.

The recommendations below reflect OpenAI information checked on October 13, 2026. Model names, rollout status, usage limits, and prices change, so confirm the model menu and current Help Center entry in the product you actually use.

The quick choice by task

What you are doing Best starting point Move up or down when
Complex coding, debugging, refactoring, or agentic repository work GPT-6.1 Sol Use Astra when the problem requires the maximum available reasoning; use Luna for clearly specified, repetitive changes that are easy to test.
Routine writing, rewriting, extraction, or format conversion Luna Use Sol for long, multi-source, professional documents; use Astra when strict templates, complex structure, or high-stakes reasoning dominate.
Complex research and synthesis GPT-6.1 Sol Use Astra for the hardest scientific or reasoning-heavy workflows; use Luna for bounded extraction and structured summaries.
Work restricted to an older model by a plan or workspace The newest model actually available to you Improve the prompt, add tests and source checks, or change the product surface rather than assuming a model you cannot select is being used.

OpenAI describes model selection as an “intelligence/price tradeoff.” In practice, the relevant axes are task difficulty, quality requirements, reasoning effort, response time, token cost, usage limits, access controls, and how easily you can verify the result.

Sol

Sol is the practical choice for demanding general work. OpenAI’s guide assigns GPT-6.1 Sol to complex coding, research, and computer use. It is intended to deliver stronger reasoning than a lightweight model without always paying Astra-level cost or latency. “GPT-6.1 Sol” is distinct from the earlier GPT-6 Sol release; do not assume that selecting a generic Sol label gives you the 6.1 version.

Astra

Astra is aimed at the hardest reasoning tasks. That includes difficult scientific workflows, problems with many interacting constraints, and professional documents that must follow an existing template or presentation structure closely. Greater capability does not make its output automatically correct: calculations, citations, code, and conclusions still require checking.

Luna

Luna is the focused, economical option for tasks with a clear target and predictable acceptance test. Examples include classifying support tickets, extracting fields, converting a document to a specified format, producing a first-pass outline, or applying a small, well-defined code change. Its value is throughput and latency when the task does not justify the strongest reasoning mode.

GPT-5.6 and earlier selections

GPT-5 launched in August 2025 for coding, writing, research, analysis, and problem-solving. Those launch descriptions are historical context, not proof that GPT-5 is now the best or most widely available option. Existing explicit GPT-5.6 selections may remain on GPT-5.6 during the GPT-6 rollout, depending on account and workspace settings. If a workflow was tuned to a GPT-5.6 prompt or output format, test any migration rather than assuming complete compatibility.

Availability depends on the product you are using

Access is not uniform across ChatGPT, Work, Codex, and the API. OpenAI’s Help Center describes GPT-6 rolling out in ChatGPT for eligible paid plans, with available models and thinking levels controlled by plan and workspace settings. An organization administrator can therefore show a different menu from an individual account.

OpenAI’s October safety documentation makes another distinction: the October GPT-6 variants are in ChatGPT, while Work and Codex users may still be on previously released GPT-6 variants. A September announcement listed GPT-6 Sol and Luna in ChatGPT Work and Codex for specified plans and in the API. A later GPT-6.1 announcement states that GPT-6.1 Sol is available in Work, Codex, and the API, but not yet in ChatGPT. These are rollout snapshots, not permanent guarantees.

How to check before you build a workflow

  1. Open the model selector in the exact ChatGPT workspace, Codex environment, or API project that will run the work.
  2. Record the full model identifier, including a version or reasoning setting when one is shown. “Sol” alone may not identify the same release as “GPT-6.1 Sol.”
  3. Check whether your plan or workspace has a message cap, daily allowance, context limit, or administrator restriction.
  4. For API use, confirm the model identifier and current token price in the API documentation at the time you deploy.
  5. Run a small representative test and compare quality, latency, and verification effort before switching a production workflow.

Choosing a model for coding

Start with Sol for complex engineering

Use GPT-6.1 Sol when a coding task spans several files, requires understanding an unfamiliar codebase, involves debugging from incomplete evidence, or needs a plan followed through multiple tool calls. It is also the sensible default for code-review explanations, migration planning, and tests that must account for existing behavior rather than merely produce syntactically valid code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a bounded change, state the repository language and version, the files in scope, the required behavior, constraints such as backward compatibility, and the command that proves success. Ask the model to identify assumptions and propose tests before editing. Sol’s stronger reasoning is useful only when the prompt gives it enough project context.

When Astra is worth the extra reasoning

Escalate to Astra when the defect has several plausible causes, the architecture has mutually dependent constraints, or a failure could create substantial security, financial, or operational risk. Astra is also appropriate when you need a difficult algorithm derived and explained, or when the agent must reconcile a large number of requirements before changing code.

Do not use the label “Astra” as a substitute for a test suite. Run the generated code in the target runtime, inspect the diff, execute security checks, and review dependencies and database migrations. A model can produce a persuasive explanation for code that fails under your actual operating system, library versions, permissions, or data.

Use Luna for repeatable, testable changes

Luna is often sufficient for tasks such as generating a function from a precise signature, converting one data format to another, writing boilerplate tests, renaming a symbol across specified files, or explaining a compiler error when the error output is complete. Give it a narrow scope and an explicit acceptance test. If the first output fails that test, either supply the failure details or move the task to Sol rather than repeatedly asking for guesses.

What the coding benchmark does—and does not—show

OpenAI reported 68.8% for GPT-6 Sol on DeepSWE v1.1 at maximum effort. OpenAI also reported a 6.4 percentage-point improvement for GPT-6.1 Sol over GPT-6 Sol’s best score on that evaluation and said GPT-6.1 Sol matched GPT-6 Astra at roughly one-fifth the cost. These are provider-run results on a specific software-engineering benchmark, not a measurement of general coding accuracy in your repository.

OpenAI’s evaluation outputs can differ from production ChatGPT because system prompts and available tools differ. Treat the scores as evidence about one test setup, then validate the proposed implementation in your own environment. The benchmark cannot tell you whether a model understands your undocumented business rule, handles your production data safely, or produces maintainable code for your team.

Choosing a model for writing

Match the model to the document, not the word count

For a short rewrite, tone conversion, outline, summary, or structured extraction, Luna can be the efficient choice. Give it the audience, target length, reading level, prohibited claims, and output format. These constraints make a bounded task easier to verify.

Use Sol for a long report, policy, technical guide, grant application, or other professional document that must reconcile several sources and maintain a consistent structure. Ask for an outline and a list of unresolved assumptions before requesting polished prose. For a document assembled from supplied material, require the model to distinguish quotations, attributed claims, and its own synthesis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where Astra helps professional documents

OpenAI characterizes GPT-6 Astra as its best model for adhering to existing templates and producing well-laid-out, succinct presentations with a structured narrative. That makes Astra a candidate for a board presentation, a complex spreadsheet explanation, or a document whose sections, terminology, and formatting rules must stay aligned across many pages.

This is an OpenAI characterization, not an independent comparative test. The reviewed material does not establish an across-the-board winner for fiction, poetry, humor, or other creative writing. Creative quality depends heavily on brief, examples, revision direction, and the writer’s taste; choose the fastest model that produces a draft you can improve, then escalate when structure or reasoning—not merely style—becomes the bottleneck.

A reliable writing workflow

  1. Define the reader, purpose, jurisdiction or date range, and the action the document should enable.
  2. Supply source material and tell the model which claims require quotation or attribution.
  3. Request a fact-and-assumption outline before polished prose for complex documents.
  4. Generate one section at a time when consistency, citations, or terminology matter.
  5. Check names, numbers, dates, legal or medical implications, and quoted language against the source material.
  6. Perform a human edit for voice, omissions, accessibility, and organizational policy.

Choosing a model for research

Sol for complex synthesis

GPT-6.1 Sol is the recommended starting point when research requires gathering evidence, comparing competing explanations, following a multi-step analytical plan, or using tools to work through a scientific or technical workflow. Ask it to separate established facts, interpretations, and open questions. Require source names and dates so you can audit each important statement.

Astra for the hardest scientific reasoning

Use Astra when the research problem itself is unusually difficult: for example, when several mathematical or scientific constraints interact, when a result must be derived rather than summarized, or when the workflow needs extensive reasoning before tool use. Astra’s role is to help construct and test an analysis, not to certify the truth of an unsupported conclusion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Luna for bounded evidence tasks

Luna works well for extracting specified fields from a known set of documents, creating a chronology, tagging passages, or producing a structured summary with a fixed schema. Keep the question narrow and provide the corpus. It is a poor fit for silently filling gaps in a literature review or making a broad claim from a few snippets.

Research safeguards

  • Ask for the exact passage or calculation supporting every high-consequence claim.
  • Check primary sources yourself, especially when the model supplies a citation, number, or date.
  • Use independent sources for claims that affect safety, finance, law, health, or public decisions.
  • Distinguish a model’s proposed explanation from evidence it actually retrieved.
  • Record the model identifier, reasoning setting, source set, and date for reproducibility.

OpenAI reports a scientific-workflow evaluation for Sol and recommends Astra for its most difficult scientific research tasks. Those statements describe intended positioning and provider evaluations; they do not establish factual accuracy on every subject.

How much stronger is GPT-6, according to the published figures?

The figures below are OpenAI-reported evaluations. Each applies to a named test and condition; none should be read as a general probability that an answer is correct.

Claim What was measured How to interpret it
68.8% GPT-6 Sol on DeepSWE v1.1 at maximum effort A software-engineering benchmark score, not general coding accuracy.
+6.4 percentage points GPT-6.1 Sol over GPT-6 Sol’s best DeepSWE v1.1 result Improvement on that benchmark under OpenAI’s test conditions.
About one-fifth the cost GPT-6.1 Sol compared with GPT-6 Astra on the same reported coding evaluation A provider cost comparison for that evaluation, not a universal price ratio.
11.4% to 7.7% Factual-error share at low reasoning effort, an approximate 32% reduction The prompts came from de-identified conversations in which users had flagged an earlier error; OpenAI says they were deliberately difficult and not representative of typical use.
98% GPT-6 Astra on FrontierMath Tier 4 Performance on that benchmark tier only.
99.9% GPT-6 Astra on ARC-AGI-3 Performance on that benchmark, not near-perfect reasoning in ordinary work.

Benchmark scores can guide a shortlist, but your acceptance test should dominate the final decision. A model that scores well on a public evaluation may still be slower, less compatible with your tools, or harder to supervise in your workflow.

Cost, latency, and usage limits

Do not confuse API token pricing with a ChatGPT subscription. OpenAI lists GPT-6.1 Sol at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens in the API, with cached input charged at a separate rate. Those are API prices reported in 2026 and can change. They do not state what an individual ChatGPT plan costs or how many messages that plan permits.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

For a managed or API deployment, calculate more than the headline token rate:

  • Input and output tokens, including repeated context and tool results.
  • Whether cached input qualifies for a different rate.
  • Reasoning effort and its effect on latency and token consumption.
  • Concurrency, rate limits, and the cost of retries after failed validation.
  • Human review, test execution, retrieval, and storage costs.
  • Data-retention and access controls required by your organization.

A cheaper model can be more expensive overall if it requires repeated retries or extensive manual correction. Conversely, using Astra for every simple transformation wastes latency and budget. Measure cost per accepted result, not cost per request alone.

A practical selection procedure

  1. Describe the acceptance test. Write what a successful result must do and how you will verify it. “Write code” is not an acceptance test; “all existing tests pass and the new endpoint returns this schema” is.
  2. Classify the task. Mark it as bounded and repetitive, complex and multi-step, or exceptionally difficult and high consequence.
  3. Choose the lowest suitable starting point. Start with Luna for bounded work, Sol for complex work, and Astra when the hardest reasoning is the central requirement.
  4. Set the reasoning level deliberately. More reasoning can improve difficult tasks but generally increases latency and cost. Use the smallest setting that meets your acceptance test.
  5. Provide the right context. Include relevant files, source passages, constraints, examples, and output schema. A stronger model cannot recover information it was never given.
  6. Run verification immediately. Execute tests, inspect sources, compare calculations, or have a qualified reviewer check the output.
  7. Escalate based on the failure. Move from Luna to Sol when the task needs broader context or iterative reasoning; move from Sol to Astra when the remaining problem is genuinely difficult rather than merely underspecified.
  8. Record the result. Keep the model identifier, effort level, prompt version, latency, cost, and acceptance outcome so a future model change can be evaluated rather than guessed.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing by the number alone

A newer label does not guarantee a better result for every workload. A fast model with a precise prompt can outperform a stronger model given incomplete requirements, while a low-cost model may be the right operational choice for millions of easy records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming ChatGPT and the API expose the same models

They do not necessarily do so. A model can be available through the API, Work, or Codex without appearing in your ChatGPT selector. Confirm the surface, plan, workspace policy, and exact identifier.

Treating benchmark scores as guarantees

Provider evaluations are useful evidence, but they are not independent replication and may use system prompts or tools unavailable in production. Preserve the benchmark name, version, effort level, and domain whenever you cite a score.

Skipping verification because the model is stronger

Higher capability reduces some errors; it does not eliminate hallucinations, insecure code, bad citations, or flawed calculations. Keep tests, source checking, and human review proportional to the consequences of failure.

Paying for reasoning you do not need

If a task has a clear schema and an automatic validator, begin with Luna. Reserve Sol and Astra for cases where their additional reasoning changes the acceptance result, not merely the elegance of the explanation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

For most demanding coding and research, start with GPT-6.1 Sol when your product surface offers it. Choose Astra for the hardest reasoning and scientific or template-constrained professional work. Use Luna for focused, repeatable tasks with easy validation, and continue using GPT-5.6 or another earlier model when that is what your plan, workspace, or compatibility requirements support. Recheck availability and pricing at the point of use, and judge the final choice by verified task success, latency, and total cost—not by the model number or a single benchmark.
