GPT-6 is rolling out in ChatGPT, but it is not yet the default for every account. OpenAI’s October 7, 2026 announcement said rollout began for paid plans and would expand to Free and Go; the current Help Center still says Free and Go accounts use GPT-5.6 Luna as rollout continues. Check your model picker rather than assuming GPT-6 is available. The new release also changes how answers may appear: ChatGPT can produce visual, interactive responses, not just text. Here are five things to know before relying on the new interface.
1. GPT-6 can change the shape of an answer, not just its wording
OpenAI calls the new capability “Intelligent UI.” Instead of returning only a block of text, ChatGPT may combine text with visual or interactive elements such as charts, buttons, forms, diagrams, calculators, bill splitters, or games. It can still answer in plain text when that is the appropriate format. OpenAI says GPT-6 can begin composing an answer while it continues to think or use tools, so parts of a response may appear progressively.
This is an interface change as well as a model rollout. A chart or interactive control can make information easier to explore, but presentation does not establish that the underlying facts or calculations are correct. OpenAI’s GPT-6 and Intelligent UI announcement describes the feature and its intended behavior.
2. Access depends on your plan, workspace, and rollout status
OpenAI’s October 7 announcement said GPT-6 rollout began that day for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise, with expansion to Free and Go starting October 8. It assigned GPT-6 Sol to the paid plans and GPT-6 Luna to Free and Go. However, the current Help Center article says GPT-5.6 Luna remains the default for Free and Go while rollout continues. The materials do not resolve whether this difference reflects timing, account-level rollout, or a support-page update lag. Treat the announcement as rollout information, not a guarantee that a particular account has GPT-6.

3. You can reduce visual elements, but not force classic text-only responses
Adjust the visual setting on the web
In ChatGPT on the web, go to Settings → Layout and visuals to reduce visual elements. OpenAI warns that some may still appear; this setting does not switch the entire experience to classic text-only mode. If you need a strictly text-based answer, ask for one in your prompt, but the setting itself is not a guarantee that every response will be text only.

Check model and app support
Intelligent UI availability can depend on plan, workspace access, app version, and reasoning level. The Help Center says it is available from Instant through Extra High, but not with Pro effort. Older ChatGPT desktop apps for macOS and Windows do not support it; OpenAI points users to the web experience. If the controls or feature are missing, check the model picker and use ChatGPT on the web before concluding that the account lacks access. Details are in the GPT-6 Help Center article.

4. A polished response is not proof that it is right
Visuals and interactive elements can make an answer look finished, but they do not verify its claims. OpenAI’s system card reports improvements in several evaluations and also notes statistically significant regressions in some difficult safety test sets compared with GPT-5.6 counterparts. OpenAI cautions that these challenging, production-derived prompts are deliberately difficult and do not estimate typical error rates in everyday ChatGPT use. They therefore cannot establish either a typical user’s error rate or a guarantee that an individual answer is safe or accurate.

OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant begins answering 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant on questions requiring web search. That is an OpenAI-reported internal comparison for that kind of question, not a promise that every answer will arrive 44% faster.

OpenAI also reports that GPT-6 Extra High began answering in the same amount of time as GPT-5.6 Medium in an internal evaluation of high-value everyday agentic tasks, while achieving a better overall score than GPT-5.6 Extra High. These results are tied to OpenAI’s evaluation setup and should not be generalized to every task or user. The October 7 announcement also says more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT each week; that is an audience figure, not a count of GPT-6 users.
