“GPS hacking” can mean very different things. In aviation, the key concern is interference with satellite navigation: jamming disrupts reception of legitimate signals, while spoofing feeds a receiver false signals that can produce incorrect position, navigation or timing information. Protecting against either takes layers of operational and infrastructure safeguards—not one technical fix.

What does “GPS hacking” mean in this context?

The phrase can suggest someone breaking into a computer system. The aviation safety issue described by international and U.S. authorities is more specifically GNSS interference: disruption or deception of signals used by satellite navigation receivers. GPS is commonly used as shorthand, while official guidance often uses the broader term GNSS.

Type of interference What happens Potential result for a receiver
Jamming Interference makes it harder for a receiver to acquire or maintain valid satellite signals. Navigation information may become unavailable or degraded.
Spoofing False signals are supplied to a receiver. The receiver may calculate incorrect position, navigation or timing information.

These are distinct problems: jamming interferes with reception, whereas spoofing can mislead a receiver with apparently usable but false information. Both are recognized GNSS interference concerns in official aviation guidance.

Why does satellite interference matter to aviation?

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) identifies GNSS as an enabler of performance-based navigation. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says GPS is used across aviation functions, including communication, navigation, surveillance, safety systems and automation. That means interference can matter beyond what a pilot sees on a navigation display.

Garmin GLO 2, GPS Receiver Including Vehicle Power Cable and USB Cable
  • Navigate with Garmin Caliber GPS data on the mobile device of your choice.
  • Glow 2 can receive position information from both the GPS and GLONASS satellite constellations, allowing it to connect to up to 24 more satellites than devices that rely on GPS alone.
  • This allows Glo 2 to lock on to satellites approximately 20% faster and remain connected even at high speed.

FAA aeronautical guidance, ENR 1.16, advises pilots to monitor aircraft equipment closely for anomalies and promptly report apparent GPS degradation to air traffic control. The guidance warns that interference may impair navigation capability and affect other aviation systems. It is a reminder that crews and controllers need to recognize and manage degraded information—not assume that a displayed position is reliable simply because it appears on a screen.

How are authorities and operators meant to reduce the risk?

Official recommendations emphasize resilience: preserving ways to navigate and operate when satellite signals are unavailable or untrustworthy, and improving awareness of interference. ICAO symposium recommendations describe several complementary measures:

Dual Electronics XGPS160 Multipurpose Universal 5 Device Bluetooth GPS Receiver with Wide Area Augmentation System and Portable Attachment
  • WAAS GPS receiver
  • Simultaneous GPS and GLONASS reception
  • Up to 10 position samples per second
  • Bluetooth connectivity to up to 5 devices
  • Automatic route recording
  • Keep conventional navigation aids and procedures available. They can support contingency operations when GNSS is disrupted.
  • Plan for interference in operational procedures. Contingency procedures give operators and authorities a way to respond when satellite navigation cannot be relied on.
  • Monitor for interference and share awareness. Detection and real-time awareness can help identify disruptions and support coordinated responses.
  • Protect critical timing functions. Relevant communications, navigation, surveillance and air traffic management infrastructure should have a time source that does not depend on GNSS.
  • Improve reporting and coordination. In a joint statement dated March 25, 2025, ICAO, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) called for protecting satellite-navigation frequencies from harmful interference, strengthening dependent systems, maintaining conventional infrastructure, coordinating among authorities and improving reports of interference.

These measures address different points of failure. Monitoring can help reveal a problem; procedures and conventional aids can support operations; and independent timing can reduce reliance on satellite signals for certain infrastructure functions. No single item eliminates every risk.

Can another positioning system replace GNSS?

Not as a universal, near-term answer based on the available ICAO guidance. An ICAO conference paper says globally applicable alternative positioning, navigation and timing systems were not a viable near-term solution to interference at the time the paper was written. That is why conventional aids and contingency procedures remain important in resilience planning.

A proposed or ground-based alternative should not be mistaken for a deployed service available everywhere. In particular, the evidence here does not establish eLoran as a universal or operational replacement. Availability and usefulness depend on the specific project and location; the cited material does not establish a current, broadly deployed alternative that removes the need for GNSS contingency planning.

Which dramatic claims should readers treat cautiously?

The TechJuice article associated with this topic reports “hundreds” of spoofing incidents in 2024, links an incident to a fatal Azerbaijan Air crash, names Russian systems and locations, and describes UK eLoran funding. Those details are not established by the official ICAO, FAA, ITU and IMO material described above. They should be treated as claims made by that article, not as verified official findings.

Garmin GLO 2 GPS and GLONASS Receiver for Precise Position Information on Mobile Devices, Black
  • Connects wirelessly to your mobile device: iPad, iPhone and other Bluetooth enabled smartphones, tablets and laptops to provide precise position information
  • Combines GPS and GLONASS satellite receivers for precise location data with Bluetooth Wireless Technology
  • It has up to 13 hours of battery life to keep your position on long trips
  • Suitable for pilots, mariners, hiking, cycling and the automotive industry
  • Charge Garmin Glo 2 easily with the included USB cable or optional 12/24 V vehicle power cable

The stronger, supportable conclusion is narrower: satellite-navigation interference is a recognized aviation and infrastructure resilience concern, and official guidance calls for layered safeguards, continued conventional capabilities, monitoring and coordination. That does not validate every incident count, attribution or deployment claim made in coverage of the issue.
