Government-to-business (G2B) describes interactions and services between government and commercial businesses. In digital-government discussions, it usually refers to online ways for businesses to find government information, meet regulatory requirements, communicate with agencies, and complete transactions.
What does government-to-business mean?
G2B identifies the business-facing side of government interaction. It is a relationship or service category—not the name of one agency, platform, or product. A government agency publishing business rules and forms, accepting a regulatory report, issuing a permit, or processing a fee can all be part of G2B.
The term is often used in e-government and digital-government contexts. The California Department of Technology defines G2B specifically as online interaction between local or central government and the commercial business sector, rather than private individuals. Broader government-business interactions are not necessarily limited to online services.

What are examples of G2B services?
A business uses a G2B service when it deals with a government agency in its capacity as a business. Examples include:
- Finding business-specific laws, regulations, instructions, and forms.
- Registering a business through an online or one-stop service.
- Applying for a license or permit.
- Submitting required reports or other compliance information.
- Paying government fees.
- Receiving agency notifications or tracking compliance requirements.
Hawaii’s digital-government overview lists these kinds of services, including e-licensing, registration, permitting, payment, reporting, notifications, and compliance tracking. The precise services available vary by government and program; this is not a universal checklist.

How is G2B different from G2C?
The key difference is who is interacting with government: G2B is business-facing, while G2C is citizen- or individual-facing. Both can involve digital information and transactions.
| Category | Audience | Typical interaction |
|---|---|---|
| G2B | Businesses and the commercial sector | Business permits, regulatory reporting, fee payments, or business-related government information |
| G2C | Individual citizens or private persons | Online interaction between government and individuals |
The California Department of Technology’s glossary distinguishes commercial businesses from private individuals when defining these categories.

How does G2B fit into e-government?
E-government is the broader use of information technology and supporting processes to deliver government information and services or improve government operations. G2B is one audience-focused part of that broader picture: it concerns the government services and communications intended for businesses.
The U.S. E-Government Act of 2002 defines electronic government in terms of using web-based applications and other information technologies, combined with processes, to improve access to government information and services or government operations. The law also describes reducing costs and burdens for businesses and other government entities as a purpose.

What are G2B services intended to achieve?
Federal descriptions of G2B initiatives emphasize reducing the burden on businesses, improving access to government information, and enabling electronic communication and transactions. These are stated aims, not proof that every service has achieved a particular level of savings or impact. The cited sources do not provide a current, comparable measure of G2B adoption, realized savings, or business outcomes.
An archived White House description refers to federal initiatives designed to help businesses interact efficiently and effectively with the government. Its program details are historical; named portals or examples on that page should not be assumed to be available today.
