The GoPro MISSION 1 PRO ILS is worth considering if you need a very small, mountable video body and want to choose your own lens. It pairs a 197g body with a Micro Four Thirds mount and a 50MP 1-inch type sensor, but its manual-focus-only lens workflow and lack of housing-free waterproofing make it a specialist tool—not a drop-in replacement for a conventional mirrorless camera or the fixed-lens Mission 1 Pro.
What the Mission 1 Pro ILS is—and what it is not
GoPro announced the MISSION 1 PRO ILS on August 26, 2026, as an interchangeable-lens member of its MISSION 1 camera family. GoPro lists a 50MP 1-inch type sensor, its GP3 processor, and a 197g body weight before adding a lens. The Micro Four Thirds mount makes the camera unusually adaptable for its size, but the body does not provide the familiar electronic lens control expected from many MFT cameras. GoPro’s announcement described the camera as available for preorder with retail availability beginning in September 2026; those are launch-period details, not a guarantee of current stock or pricing.
The strongest case for the ILS is a video setup where a small body, unusual mounting position, or particular lens matters more than autofocus and simple point-and-shoot operation. It can shoot 50MP stills, but Digital Camera World characterized it as video-first rather than a typical stills-focused mirrorless camera. Its compactness is meaningful only when considered with the lens and support hardware: the body may be tiny, while the completed rig may not be.

GoPro lists maximum modes of 8K60, 4K240, and 1440p480, along with Open Gate recording up to 8K30 or 4K120. It also specifies 10-bit color and GP-Log2. These are manufacturer-listed modes, not a promise that every frame rate and resolution is equally practical for every subject, lighting condition, or workflow. Choose a mode based on the delivery format and motion you need rather than treating the largest number as the default setting.
#1 Best Overall
- Micro Four Thirds Lens Compatibility: MISSION 1 PRO ILS is compatible with a wide variety of manual focus and manual aperture Micro Four Thirds (MFT) lenses,1 giving you the freedom to pair your camera with the ideal lens for any scenario or use an adapter to attach vintage lenses, PL mount cinema lenses or other specialty lenses. Harness shallow depth of field, smooth focus transitions and selective focus for visuals that pull viewers in, guide their attention and tell your story with cinematic flair.
- Compact, Lightweight Design: Made for easier professional rigging, MISSION 1 PRO ILS changes the game for complex shots. Weighing in at only 6.95oz (197g) with a small footprint, it lets you mount a lensed camera in tight spaces, like inside a car, with simpler, smaller rigging. This makes getting professional, cinematic perspectives easier than ever.
- 1” Sensor + Advanced Low-Light Performance: MISSION 1 PRO ILS utilizes a 1” sensor (1.0-type sensor) that captures more light and detail to deliver pro-quality results in a compact camera. Take advantage of the sensor’s 50MP when shooting in 8K, or leverage the Quad Bayer 12MP mode in 4K for even better low-light performance.
- Best-in-Class Video With 8K Open Gate: 8K video delivers breathtaking image quality with 300% more resolution than 4K. MISSION 1 PRO ILS takes it even further with Open Gate capture that uses the full image sensor for maximum height and width for the most post-production flexibility. Paired with an anamorphic lens, Open Gate retains maximum resolution when your footage is desqueezed into a wide aspect ratio.
- What’s Included: MISSION 1 PRO ILS Camera (Body Only), Enduro 2 Battery, Body Cap, USB-C Cable
GoPro also lists built-in four-microphone audio, separate 32-bit-float WAV capture, USB-C microphone support, and Bluetooth 5.3 audio. The company claims over three hours of continuous 4K30 recording from the 2150mAh Enduro 2 battery. That runtime is a GoPro claim, not an independently established result here, and should not be assumed for higher-resolution or high-frame-rate recording.
Which lenses work with the Mission 1 Pro ILS?
The mount is Micro Four Thirds, but that does not mean every electronic MFT lens will operate normally. GoPro describes compatibility with manual-focus, manual-aperture MFT lenses. The body does not communicate electronically with the lens, so the photographer must set focus manually; focus-by-wire lenses cannot be focused from this body. Before buying a lens, confirm that its focus and aperture can be controlled mechanically without electronic communication.
Digital Camera World reviewed the camera with a Laowa 7.5mm f/2 manual-focus lens. That is a documented example, not a guarantee for all lenses from that maker or all MFT lenses. GoPro also describes adapter use with vintage, PL-mount, and specialty lenses; each adapter must match the donor lens mount to the camera’s MFT mount, and an adapter does not eliminate the need for workable manual focus and aperture control.

GoPro explicitly states, “Micro Four Thirds lenses are sold separately.” Budget and pack for the lens as a separate purchase. The right focal length depends on the shot: a wide lens may suit confined spaces or action-camera-like viewpoints, while other work may call for a different field of view. No one lens makes the ILS a universal choice.
How does focus and stabilization work?
Manual focus is a central trade-off
There is no lens autofocus through the ILS mount. That makes the camera a less natural choice for spontaneous moments, moving subjects, or anyone who relies on continuous autofocus. For planned shots, locked focus, or a rig where focus can be set before recording, manual operation may be manageable. GoPro’s free Mission Monitor app for iPhone and iPad offers focus peaking, focus assist, zebra pattern, and LUT preview, and requires iOS 18 or later. TechRadar reported that the launch-era app required a wired connection; its reviewer did not personally test the app.
Select the lens for HyperSmooth
Digital Camera World says users must select the appropriate lens in the camera menu for HyperSmooth. Its follow-up reported that stabilization looked poor in testing when that setup step was omitted. If stabilization appears unexpectedly weak, check the selected-lens setting before assuming the lens or camera is at fault.

Even with correct setup, do not assume the ILS behaves like a horizon-lock action camera. Digital Camera World’s reviewer found stabilization useful with interchangeable lenses but noted edge wobble in handheld footage and the absence of horizon lock. Those are reviewer observations rather than a guarantee of results in every configuration.

No. TechRadar describes the ILS as weatherproof, not waterproof, and Digital Camera World says it should not be submerged without underwater housing. Splash resistance also depends on pairing the body with a weather-sealed lens, according to Digital Camera World. The interchangeable mount removes the housing-free underwater convenience of the fixed-lens Mission 1 Pro, so do not treat the ILS as a dive camera.
How does the ILS compare with the fixed-lens Mission 1 Pro?
| Decision point | Mission 1 Pro ILS | Fixed-lens Mission 1 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Lens choice | Interchangeable MFT mount; lens sold separately, with manual operation required | Fixed lens; no lens swapping |
| Focus | Manual focus; no electronic lens communication | Autofocus, according to TechRadar |
| Underwater use | Not submersible without appropriate housing | TechRadar says housing-free waterproofing to 20m |
| Horizon lock | Not included, according to TechRadar and Digital Camera World | Included, according to TechRadar |
| Best fit | Small, lens-selectable video rig for deliberate manual-focus work | Ready-to-shoot action use where autofocus and housing-free waterproofing matter |
The fixed-lens model is the more straightforward fit for users who prioritize autofocus, horizon lock, and underwater protection without a housing. The ILS makes sense when lens choice and the ability to build a compact, specialized rig outweigh those conveniences.

Does its small body make a practical camera rig?
Digital Camera World reports that lenses over 250g need external support and advises care with mounting fingers when lens weight or shock and vibration are high. That matters for vehicle mounting, impact-prone use, or any setup where a lens can exert leverage on the body. Include the lens, adapter, mount, and support in the weight and clearance calculation—not just the 197g camera body.
TechRadar’s Sam Kieldsen reported one week of testing with a Laowa 7.5mm F/2.0 C-Dreamer, including car-mounted video and a coastal photo walk, as well as battery and thermal checks in demanding modes. Digital Camera World’s reviewer found the compact size useful for tight angles. These accounts illustrate the camera’s intended appeal, but they do not establish that every lens-and-mount combination is secure or that every high-demand mode remains cool under all conditions.
GoPro also offers a MISSION 1 Series Point-and-Shoot Grip. A grip or lens support may help make a particular rig more usable, but match support to the lens and mounting situation rather than assuming a small body needs no additional rigging.

What should you check before buying?
- Confirm you want a video-first camera and are comfortable setting focus manually.
- Verify that the specific lens has mechanical manual focus and aperture control; focus-by-wire lenses cannot focus on the body.
- Account for the lens as a separate purchase, plus any needed mount adapter or lens support.
- For HyperSmooth, select the appropriate lens in the camera menu.
- Plan on appropriate underwater housing for submersion; splash protection depends in part on the lens being weather-sealed.
- TechRadar reports no internal storage and recommends a V30/Class A2 microSD card rating. Confirm GoPro’s current capacity and card compatibility guidance before choosing a specific card.
At launch, GoPro listed a $699.99 MSRP and a $599.99 price for existing subscribers, with preorder availability and retail availability expected from September 2026. Those are dated announcement terms; check GoPro or a retailer for current price, stock, and any subscriber offer rather than assuming the launch price remains available.
Who should buy the Mission 1 Pro ILS?
Consider it if your priority is a small video body that can take a chosen manual lens for a confined, mounted, or otherwise unusual viewpoint. It is a poor fit if you need effortless autofocus, housing-free submersion, horizon lock, or a conventional still-photo experience. For many action-camera users, the fixed-lens Mission 1 Pro’s autofocus and waterproofing will be more useful than the ILS’s lens flexibility; for filmmakers who can work manually and support the lens properly, the ILS offers a distinct compact-rig option.
