The GoPro MISSION 1 PRO ILS can capture high-resolution video, but it is not a point-and-shoot action camera with a lens ready to go. It is a 197g body with an interchangeable Micro Four Thirds (MFT) mount; you buy the lens separately, set focus and aperture yourself, and accept trade-offs in convenience and water protection. The creative freedom is real, but so is the setup and focusing practice.
What the MISSION 1 PRO ILS can do—and what the specs don’t promise
GoPro’s August 2026 announcement lists a 50MP 1-inch sensor and video modes up to 8K60 and 4K240. Open Gate capture is listed up to 8K30 and 4K120. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of image quality; they also do not mean every lens or shooting situation will deliver equally good results. The lens, focus, exposure, movement and lighting still shape the footage.
The body weighs 197g (6.95oz) before a lens is attached, according to GoPro, 2026. GoPro says the mount accepts compatible MFT lenses and adapters for vintage, PL-mount and specialty glass. Lenses are sold separately, so body weight and body-only price do not describe the complete shooting kit. GoPro’s announcement gives its specifications and examples of lenses, including several Laowa models; those examples are not a complete compatibility list or a guarantee for every lens.
Why getting strong footage takes practice
The ILS puts more decisions in the operator’s hands than a fixed-lens action camera. GoPro’s compatibility guidance requires manual focus and manual aperture control, or a qualifying fixed aperture, and a lens that covers a sensor of at least 1 inch. The lens must not depend on electronic contacts to communicate with the camera. Check a specific lens against GoPro’s compatibility requirements before buying it.
#1 Best Overall
- 1” Sensor + Advanced Low-Light Performance: MISSION 1 PRO utilizes a 1” sensor (1.0-type sensor) that is larger than sensors found in most mobile phones and some compact cameras. The use of this larger sensor results in better low-light performance with less noise than the smaller sensors—making it ideal for capturing cinematic footage in all conditions including dusk, indoor and night shots.
- Best-in-Class Video With 8K Open Gate: 8K video delivers breathtaking image quality with 300% more resolution than 4K. MISSION 1 PRO takes it even further with Open Gate capture that uses the full image sensor for maximum height and width for the most post-production flexibility.
- Over 3 Hours of 4K Runtime + Faster Charging: The all-new 2150mAh Enduro 2 battery gives you longer runtimes than any other GoPro battery in all conditions. You’ll get over 3 hours of continuous 4K30 recording and over 5 hours of 1080p30 recording on a single charge while improved heat management helps prevent thermal shutdown. It’s also capable of rapid charging so there’s less downtime and more production time.
- 50MP Photos + 44MP Frame Grabs: MISSION 1 PRO takes up to 50MP photos in Single, Interval and Burst modes while giving you the option to let AI automatically adjust settings for night and low-light shots. You can also grab stunning photos up to 44MP from 4:3 8K videos using the GoPro Quik app.
- What's Included: MISSION 1 PRO Camera, Enduro 2 Battery, Removeable Lens Hood, Curved Adhesive Mount, Mounting Buckle + Thumb Screw, USB-C Cable
TechRadar’s reviewer described a rewarding but demanding learning curve after a week of shooting, mostly with a manual Laowa prime. That is one reviewer’s hands-on experience, not a controlled comparison, but it points to the central adjustment: choosing a lens is only the start. You also need to set focus and aperture deliberately, and keep focus where you want it as the scene or camera moves.
GoPro lists focus peaking and focus assist among the camera’s tools. They can help you judge manual focus, but they do not make a manual lens autofocus. Mission Monitor also provides focus and exposure assistance; GoPro says it requires iOS 18 or later. Check current app and camera documentation before relying on a particular workflow.

Choosing a lens and planning the kit
Start with the shot, not the largest video mode. A very wide lens suits immersive action or confined spaces; a less extreme focal length can make people and objects feel more natural. A fast aperture can help in dimmer conditions, but it does not remove the need to set focus accurately. GoPro’s announcement names demonstration options ranging from the Laowa 4mm f/2.8 circular fisheye to a 17mm f/1.8 prime and a 4.5–10mm zoom fisheye. These are examples, not universal recommendations; verify each lens’s mount, coverage, manual controls and intended image character.
- Confirm the lens works: check MFT fit, sensor coverage, manual focus, aperture operation and whether electronic contacts are required.
- Choose for the scene: consider how wide a view you need and how much distortion or perspective effect suits the subject.
- Budget for more than the body: include a compatible lens and any verified adapter required for your setup.
- Practice before an important shoot: rehearse focus and exposure changes with the camera moving as it will during the actual shot.
TechRadar reports that the camera has no internal storage and supports V30 and Class A2 microSD cards. Plan for a compatible card, and check the current camera guidance for capacity and recording-mode requirements before filming. No card recommendation should be inferred from those speed-class details alone.

ILS versus the fixed-lens MISSION 1 PRO
The practical choice is between lens flexibility and a more ready-to-use setup. TechRadar reports the fixed-lens MISSION 1 PRO includes a built-in lens, autofocus and 20m waterproofing; the ILS instead accepts interchangeable lenses but lacks those specific conveniences. GoPro describes the ILS as weatherproof, not waterproof. Consider the whole setup—including lens cost and the time needed to focus—not just the body.
| Decision point | MISSION 1 PRO ILS | MISSION 1 PRO |
|---|---|---|
| Lens | Interchangeable compatible MFT lens; sold separately, per GoPro | Built-in lens, per TechRadar |
| Focus | Manual focus with focus-assistance tools, per GoPro | Autofocus, per TechRadar |
| Water protection | Weatherproof, not waterproof, per TechRadar | Waterproof to 20m, per TechRadar |
| Setup and control | More lens choice and manual control; demands lens selection and focus practice | More ready to shoot when autofocus and a built-in lens suit the shot |
The comparison reflects the distinctions reported by GoPro and TechRadar, not a laboratory test. If interchangeable optics and manual control matter more than fast setup or underwater use, the ILS may fit. If you want autofocus and the reported 20m waterproofing without choosing a separate lens, the fixed-lens model is the more straightforward option.
