Yes—in a specific way. GoPro’s free October 13, 2026 firmware update is designed to make photo capture on the MISSION 1 Series more responsive and useful for bursts. GoPro says holding the shutter can capture more than 100 12MP photos or more than 20 50MP RAW photos, with an on-screen indicator to warn when the buffer is nearing its limit. Those are manufacturer-stated capacities, not independent test results. GoPro’s announcement does not establish that the update improves sharpness, dynamic range, autofocus, or low-light image quality.
What the October 2026 update changes
GoPro describes this as a ground-up rebuild of photo capture behavior. The announced changes are aimed at how the camera responds to a photographer, rather than at its imaging hardware:
- More responsive shutter: pressing the shutter is intended to capture immediately.
- Continuous capture: holding the shutter captures a rapid succession of photos.
- Buffer warning: a new on-screen indicator shows when continuous shooting is nearing its buffer limit.
- Capture confirmation: a revised sound provides confirmation for each captured photo.
GoPro says the continuous-capture capacity exceeds 100 photos at 12MP or 20 RAW photos at 50MP. These figures describe the company’s announced capacity; GoPro’s announcement does not provide independent testing conditions or a third-party verification.
Does it make the MISSION 1 Pro a better still camera?
It makes the camera more capable and responsive as a still-photo tool, particularly when the priority is catching an action sequence. A quicker capture response and the ability to keep shooting while holding the shutter address practical still-photo workflow limitations.

That is different from proving that the camera now produces better-looking individual photos. GoPro’s launch specifications already describe the MISSION 1 PRO as having a 50MP 1-inch sensor and 50MP RAW photo capture (GoPro’s MISSION 1 Series launch announcement). The October update announcement does not say that the sensor or lens changed, and it does not publish a controlled before-and-after comparison of sharpness, dynamic range, autofocus, exposure consistency, or low-light quality. It therefore supports a claim about responsiveness and burst workflow—not a claim that image quality improved or that the camera outperforms dedicated still cameras.
Which cameras and tools are included?
MISSION 1 Series cameras
GoPro says the October photo update is available for MISSION 1, MISSION 1 PRO, and MISSION 1 PRO ILS. The announcement describes the same still-photo capture experience across the series.

MISSION Monitor app
GoPro also updated the free MISSION Monitor app for iPhone and iPad. It adds a histogram, waveform, RGB parade, false color, wireless camera connectivity, and support for the new photo capture behavior. These are monitoring and exposure-assessment tools; they do not change the camera sensor or establish improved final still-image quality. GoPro says the app requires iOS 18 or later.

GoPro separately announced updated public beta Labs firmware with anamorphic lens support for the interchangeable-lens MISSION 1 PRO ILS, including HyperSmooth support and pixel-aspect-ratio metadata for desktop tools. This is distinct from the main still-photo update and applies specifically to the ILS model.

How to install the firmware
GoPro says the October photo experience is available as a free firmware update through the GoPro Quik app or GoPro.com. Its support instructions describe updating through the app with a smartphone or tablet and Wi-Fi, and also provide a manual update route. The cited support page is specifically for MISSION 1 PRO ILS; its release number should not be treated as the current fixed-lens PRO version.
- Choose a route: use GoPro Quik on a smartphone or tablet with Wi-Fi, or follow GoPro’s manual update instructions at the MISSION 1 PRO ILS firmware support page. For another MISSION 1 model, use the instructions for that exact model.
- Follow the model-specific prompts: complete the update through Quik or the applicable manual process. Do not assume a firmware release number listed for the ILS applies to the fixed-lens PRO.
- Check the camera afterward: confirm the update has completed, then test pressing and holding the shutter to check the new capture behavior and buffer indicator.
Optional grip and earlier firmware changes
GoPro presents the MISSION 1 Series Point-and-Shoot Grip as a handheld accessory for the photo experience. It is sold separately or included with the MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition. The grip is optional: it is not required for the firmware update or continuous capture. Confirm compatibility and current availability with a retailer before buying.

Do not confuse the October photo update with GoPro’s separate July 29, 2026 firmware announcement for MISSION 1 and MISSION 1 PRO. That earlier announcement covered compatibility with the MISSION 1 accessory ecosystem and image-tuning changes to Dive mode contrast and tone, color accuracy, and cinematic motion blur. The announcements do not provide version numbers linking those changes, so they should not be presented as features delivered together in one cumulative firmware release.
