The GoPro HERO9 Black has motion-related features, but they do different jobs: HyperSmooth stabilizes video, while GoPro Labs motion triggers can start or stop recording when the camera moves. GoPro documents accelerometer and gyroscope use for the Labs triggers, but does not publish the HERO9’s sensor component models or detailed specifications in the sources cited here.
What does the HERO9’s motion sensor do?
There are two distinct motion-related capabilities to understand. HyperSmooth reduces visible camera shake in video. GoPro Labs motion triggers use camera movement as a condition for starting or stopping capture. One makes footage steadier; the other automates recording.
HyperSmooth: stabilize video
GoPro describes HyperSmooth as correcting camera shake. It crops the image during recording to leave room for stabilization, so stronger stabilization can mean a tighter frame. The HERO9 Black manual lists four settings: Boost, High, On, and Off. GoPro HERO9 Black User Manual
Recommended Free Tools
| Setting | Stabilization and crop | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Boost | Maximum stabilization with tight cropping. | For especially bouncy movement, when the tighter view is acceptable. |
| High | Stabilization with less cropping than Boost. | When you want strong stabilization but prefer to retain more of the frame. |
| On | Stabilization with less cropping than Boost. | For a less aggressive crop than Boost. |
| Off | No stabilization and no stabilization crop. | When you want to record without HyperSmooth. |
GoPro recommends Boost for bouncy situations such as a rough trail or a camera mounted on a moving pet. GoPro’s HyperSmooth guidance

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
GoPro Labs: trigger capture from movement
GoPro’s January 13, 2021 announcement describes Labs motion triggers that use the accelerometer and/or gyroscope to start or stop capture when the camera is moving. The stated benefit is to preserve storage and battery by recording only when movement is detected. This is a Labs feature, not a HyperSmooth setting; the announcement presents GoPro Labs as a special firmware program. GoPro Labs firmware announcement
Which feature should you use?
- You want smoother footage: Adjust HyperSmooth. Choose Boost when movement is particularly rough and a tighter crop is acceptable; consider High or On for less cropping; select Off to disable stabilization and its crop.
- You want recording to respond to movement: Look to GoPro Labs motion triggers, not HyperSmooth. The announcement describes movement-based start/stop capture but does not specify trigger thresholds or detailed operating limits.
Does the HERO9 have an accelerometer and gyroscope?
GoPro’s Labs announcement says motion triggers can leverage an accelerometer and/or gyroscope. That establishes the sensor types used by the documented trigger feature, but the cited official material does not identify the exact components inside the HERO9 Black or give their measurement range, sampling rate, or other technical specifications. It also does not establish whether every firmware version exposes identical trigger behavior.

GoPro also documented the optional Max Lens Mod as compatible with HERO9 Black. GoPro described it as enabling Max HyperSmooth, ultra-wide Max SuperView, and horizon lock even when the camera rotates through 360 degrees. It is relevant if you specifically want those capabilities; it is not necessary to explain or use the distinction between HyperSmooth and Labs motion triggers.
