In The Verge’s October 9, 2026 hands-on report, Googlebooks showed promise as Android-connected laptops, but early testing also exposed inconsistent phone connections and file transfers, uneven Android app support, and friction between Android and Linux apps. Those are observations from four staff members testing partner-manufacturer devices—not a controlled benchmark or a guarantee that every Googlebook behaves the same way.
What this early hands-on report covers
The Verge’s October 9, 2026 report describes four staff members testing Googlebooks from partner manufacturers. The named devices were an Asus Googlebook 14, HP Googlebook 14, Lenovo Googlebook 15, Acer Googlebook 14, and Dell XPS Googlebook. These names do not identify complete retail configurations.
The report offers an early snapshot of software and connectivity, not a controlled comparison with Windows or Mac laptops. It does not establish current retail configurations or inventory, pricing, later software fixes, phone-model compatibility, or how widespread the reported problems are.
Does phone integration work reliably?
It could be convenient in specific moments, but reviewers described inconsistent behavior. Dominic Preston reported that his phone connection dropped in and out and that he could not determine how to connect a second phone or tablet. The account does not establish whether those issues affect every device or setup.

There were useful interactions, too: reviewers could reply to a WhatsApp notification from the laptop, cast an app from a phone, and use Quick Share to move files. Casting was not consistently useful across apps. Preston described illegible text in Bluesky, a banking app that blocked casting for security reasons, and a credit-card app that broke.
Are phone file transfers practical?
Preston found browsing the phone drive in the Files app slow and used Quick Share for some transfers instead. He reported that opening or transferring a single photo could take minutes. That is one reviewer’s observation, not an average or a measured transfer-time result.

The report therefore points to two different experiences: Quick Share was useful for some transfers, while direct access through Files was frustrating in Preston’s testing. It does not establish transfer speeds across devices or phone models.

Reviewers found Android apps uneven as laptop applications. Many appeared designed for touchscreens or tablet layouts: some streaming apps opened full-screen in tablet-style interfaces, some apps failed to show content while their windows were resized, and keyboard or mouse support varied.

David Pierce used Crunchyroll playback controls as an example of a keyboard-use gap. Antonio G. Di Benedetto said the mobile-first versions of Photoshop and Lightroom were adequate for only the simplest editing, and preferred desktop applications for more demanding work. These are the reviewers’ assessments, not a formal feature-by-feature comparison of the apps.
What happens when Linux apps are added?
Stevie Bonifield installed Slack, GIMP, and Steam through the Debian virtual machine in the Terminal app. The report says these Linux apps remained separate from Android apps in ways that complicated ordinary laptop workflows:
- Linux apps did not appear in the app drawer or taskbar like Android apps.
- Switching between environments required manually switching mouse and keyboard input.
- Files and clipboard content did not automatically transfer between Linux and Android apps.
Bonifield also reported that the games tested through Steam were too laggy to play. That brief observation concerns those games in that test; it does not establish how every Linux application performs.

What does the report establish—and what remains open?
The report describes a mixed early experience: phone notifications, casting, and Quick Share could be useful, while connection reliability, phone-file access, app behavior, and cross-environment workflows caused friction for the reviewers. Its authors viewed the hardware favorably in broad terms but identified software as the weak point at that stage.

It does not establish whether later updates addressed these problems, whether they affect all Googlebooks, or how Googlebooks compare with other laptop platforms under controlled conditions. Anyone evaluating one should verify the exact retail configuration and assess the apps and phone workflows they depend on; the device-family names in the report are not complete model identifiers.
