Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze are all excellent at getting you from one address to another, but they are built for different jobs. Google Maps is the most complete all-purpose mapping service. Apple Maps is the best fit for people invested in the Apple ecosystem. Waze is the specialist choice for live driving alerts and aggressive traffic rerouting.
The practical answer is not always to pick one app. Many drivers use Google Maps or Apple Maps to research a destination, then switch to Waze when traffic, crashes and road hazards are the main concern.

Google Maps: the best all-rounder
Google Maps is the strongest choice when navigation is only one part of what you need. It combines driving, walking, cycling and public-transit directions with business listings, reviews, photos, restaurant filters, reservations, saved lists and Street View. Google’s iPhone listing says the service includes information on more than 250 million businesses and places, although the features available vary by country.
Where Google Maps stands out
- Place research: Reviews, photos, opening hours, busy-times information and Street View make it easier to evaluate a destination before leaving.
- Transport choices: You can compare driving, walking, cycling, public transit and rideshare options in one app.
- Saved places: Lists and shared saved locations are useful for trips, restaurant planning and group travel.
- Platform support: Google Maps works on Android and iPhone and supports both Android Auto and CarPlay.
- Offline road navigation: You can download a map before travelling through an area with poor reception.
How to download an offline Google map
On Android, open Google Maps > profile picture or initial > Offline maps > Select your own map > Download. You can also search for a place, tap its name or address, and choose More > Download offline map > Download.

Offline mode has important limits. The complete route must fit inside the downloaded area. Google Maps cannot provide live traffic or alternate routes while offline, and walking, cycling and public-transit directions are unavailable. Downloaded maps can also expire. When a map has 15 days or less remaining and the device is connected to Wi-Fi, Google Maps attempts to update it.
Google Maps calculates routes using anonymous location data, current and historical travel information, incident reports and data from partners such as governments, schools, nonprofits and businesses. This gives it broad coverage, but the route is still an estimate rather than a guarantee. An apparently faster route may include difficult turns, private roads or traffic that changed after the route was calculated.
Google Maps route preferences
Google Maps can avoid tolls, highways and ferries. The exact controls vary by device and vehicle integration. In Google Maps built into a car, open Route overview > Route options, select the preference and tap Back.

Google Maps drawbacks
- Offline navigation is not equivalent to online navigation because it loses live traffic and alternate-route calculations.
- A downloaded city map may not cover a longer journey that crosses the map boundary.
- Offline downloads are unavailable in some countries and regions.
- Place information and reviews can be outdated, particularly for small businesses that have recently moved or closed.
For most people, these limitations are outweighed by Google Maps’ broad search database and support for almost every common transport mode.
Apple Maps: best for Apple users
Apple Maps makes the most sense when your phone, car and wearable devices are all from Apple. It is integrated with Siri, CarPlay, Apple Watch, iPhone widgets and Driving Focus. Spoken directions continue when another app is open, the phone is locked or Driving Focus is enabled.
Apple Maps’ main strengths
- Apple integration: Ask Siri for directions, send routes to CarPlay or use navigation with an Apple Watch.
- Privacy model: Apple says Maps usage is not associated with personal data. Search and map requests use rotating identifiers that are not tied to an Apple Account. Pinned locations, recents, visited places and guides can be end-to-end encrypted when synced with two-factor authentication.
- Offline maps: In selected areas, offline maps provide place details and directions for driving, walking, cycling and transit.
- Clean driving experience: Apple Maps is straightforward for turn-by-turn driving and integrates naturally with the iPhone’s system interface.
How to download Apple Maps for offline use
Open Maps > picture or initials next to the search field > Offline Maps > Add. You can also search for a location and tap Download, or touch and hold an unmarked map area and choose Download.

- Versatile Car Phone Mount: Cell phone car mount boasts premium suction strength and an upgraded air vent clip, allowing for flexible installation options on windshields, dashboards, and air vents. Note!3M Dashboard Pad is NOT REQUIRED when using a phone holder on windshield
- Strong Suction Performance: Car phone holder comes with a double-locked suction cup made of heat-resistant TPU material, guaranteeing it stays firmly attached to your dashboard even in extreme heat. Reactivate its sticky power by washing with water and air-drying.
- Fully Adjustable Design: Featuring a 360-degree rotating ball joint and an adjustable extension arm ranging from 3.7 inches to 5.9 inches, this dash-Mounted phone mount for cars allows you to customize your phone's placement to any desired angle or distance, offering maximum viewing flexibility.
- Universal Fit: Engineered to accommodate all smartphones ranging in size from 4.0 to 7.1 inches and devices up to 14mm thick, including GPS devices, this phone stand for trucks includes a one-touch release mechanism for swift and easy phone mounting. It serves as an excellent accessory for drivers requiring constant phone access, enhancing driving stability and safety.
- Comprehensive Safety Features: The car phone mount for iPhone includes a unique hook design fortified with stainless steel and padded with thick plastic, ensuring secure engagement with air vent blades without causing scratches. The robust silicone rubber provides sturdy protection, even on bumpy roads. Note: Not suitable for circular air vents desk mount.
Apple says an offline map can include place hours and ratings, estimated arrival times, and turn-by-turn directions for driving, walking, cycling and transit. Coverage is limited to selected areas, however, and offline maps do not sync automatically between an iPhone, iPad and Mac. Downloading an area on your iPhone does not make it available on your other Apple devices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteApple Maps incident reporting
While following driving directions, tap the Incident Reporting button and choose an option. From the main map, use Maps > picture or initials next to the search field > Reports > Report a New Issue > Report an Incident.
Depending on the region, the available categories include crash, speed check, traffic, roadwork, hazard and road closure. Apple evaluates reports and displays markers when it has a high level of confidence. That means a report may not appear immediately for everyone. Users can mark some incidents as Cleared or Still Here; speed-check reports cannot be cleared by users.
Look Around versus Street View
Apple’s street-level imagery feature is called Look Around. In a supported city or region, open Maps and tap the Look Around button near the bottom of the map. Its coverage is more limited than Google Street View, so Google Maps is usually better when you want to inspect an unfamiliar building, entrance or street before arriving.
Apple Maps drawbacks
- Offline maps and several navigation features are available only in selected areas.
- Offline maps do not sync across devices.
- Incident reports are evaluated before they are shown or cleared, so they are not necessarily instant.
- Features such as spoken directions, detailed imagery and incident categories vary considerably by country.
- Apple announced local Maps advertising for businesses in the United States and Canada beginning in summer 2026. The ads will appear in search results and a Suggested Places experience and will be marked as ads.
Choose Apple Maps if Siri, CarPlay, Apple Watch and Apple’s privacy approach matter more to you than Google’s larger place-search ecosystem.

Why drivers choose Waze
- Fast reaction to incidents: A newly reported crash, blocked lane or object in the road can influence routes and warnings.
- Aggressive rerouting: Waze frequently looks for a quicker route as traffic conditions change.
- Driving-specific warnings: Alerts are more focused on events that affect the next few miles of a car journey.
- Toll estimates: Waze can show an estimated toll price before navigation when data is available.
- Car support: Waze works with CarPlay and Android Auto.
How to report traffic in Waze
Tap the Report icon, choose Traffic, select Heavy or Standstill if applicable, and tap Report. Waze may submit the report automatically after a few seconds. If the connection drops while reporting, Waze says it can save that traffic report and submit it after reconnecting.
Waze limits excessive reporting. Its current help information says a first reporting flag can block reporting for 24 hours, a second for seven days and a third for 30 days. Your username appears on reports visible to other users, which is worth remembering if you prefer not to attach activity to a public profile.
How to compare Waze routes
Search for a destination, tap it, choose View routes and swipe up. During a drive, tap the Alternate routes icon. If Waze suggests changing the route, choose Change route or No thanks.
Waze route-avoidance settings
To set ongoing preferences, open Waze > menu icon > Settings > Navigation and enable Avoid toll roads, Avoid ferries or Avoid freeways. You can also use destination > View routes > Avoid before starting a journey.
These settings are preferences, not absolute rules. Waze may still suggest a toll road, freeway or ferry when it considers that there is no practical alternative. Toll prices are estimates based on factors such as time, date, route, vehicle type, toll passes, settings and community information. They are not guaranteed prices from the toll operator, and Waze does not calculate prices for congestion-based toll roads whose rates change with traffic.
Waze’s decisive weaknesses
- No true offline navigation: Waze requires an active data connection to locate and navigate a route reliably.
- Limited transport modes: It does not support walking, cycling or public-transit navigation. It is designed for private cars, motorcycles and taxis.
- Uneven report quality: Busy urban routes may have many current reports, while quiet roads may have few.
- Parking information is not guaranteed: Rates come from third parties and may be missing or inaccurate.
- Planning limitations: Plan a Drive must be configured on the phone and is not currently supported on Android Auto, Android Automotive or CarPlay.
To plan ahead on a phone, use Waze > menu icon > Plan a drive > +, enter the destination, choose the arrival date and time, and tap Save. Waze then calculates a suggested departure time using traffic and location data.

Privacy: which navigation app collects the least?
There is no simple privacy winner for every user, because each service uses location and search information differently.
| App | Relevant privacy consideration |
|---|---|
| Apple Maps | Apple says Maps requests use rotating identifiers that are not tied to an Apple Account. Synced saved locations and guides can be end-to-end encrypted with two-factor authentication. |
| Google Maps | When Timeline is enabled, precise device locations can be saved to a personal map, including when Google apps are not open. Navigation can collect location information multiple times per minute. |
| Waze | Waze’s privacy policy says it may collect location and route information, search history, voice and audio data used by voice features, and usage data. De-identified location and route data may be shared with Google affiliates to improve mapping and road-alert services. |
If minimizing account-linked mapping data is your priority, Apple’s stated model is the most attractive. If you already use Google Timeline, saved places and personalized recommendations, Google Maps offers more convenience in exchange for a broader data relationship. Waze is the most explicitly community-driven service, but its driving reports and route history are still data points to consider.
Which app is better for common situations?
| Situation | Best choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Finding a restaurant or business | Google Maps | Strong reviews, photos, hours, filters and place information. |
| Driving through heavy traffic | Waze | Community incident reports and frequent live rerouting. |
| Walking around a city | Google Maps or Apple Maps | Both support walking directions; Waze does not. |
| Public transportation | Google Maps or Apple Maps | Both support transit in supported areas; Waze does not. |
| Road trip with weak reception | Google Maps or Apple Maps | Both support offline maps, subject to coverage and route limits. |
| Using Siri, Apple Watch and CarPlay | Apple Maps | It is the most deeply integrated with Apple hardware and services. |
| Android phone and Android Auto | Google Maps or Waze | Apple Maps is not available as an Android Auto navigation option. |
| Checking a building before visiting | Google Maps | Street View generally has broader coverage than Look Around. |
Device requirements
The current U.S. App Store listing for Google Maps requires iOS 16 or later and supports iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. Waze also requires iOS 16 or later; Waze’s availability information lists Android 10 or later and iOS 16 or later. Google’s Android requirements page currently lists Android 9 or later for receiving Google Maps updates, with Google Maps version 10.15 or later.
Apple Maps is a built-in Apple system app rather than a conventional independently versioned App Store navigation app. Its current user guide is organized around iOS 26.

Can Apple Maps work offline?
Yes. In supported areas, open Maps, tap your picture or initials, choose Offline Maps, then tap Add. Apple says offline maps can provide place details and directions for driving, walking, cycling and transit, but downloaded maps do not sync across devices.
Can Waze work without an internet connection?
No. Waze requires an active data connection to locate and navigate reliably. It is not a suitable replacement for an offline map on a remote road trip.
Which app has the most accurate traffic information?
Waze is usually the strongest choice for community-reported crashes, hazards, police reports and closures. Google Maps and Apple Maps also provide live traffic and incident data, but the quality and speed of reports vary by location and platform.
Can I use more than one navigation app?
Yes. A practical setup is Google Maps or Apple Maps for researching and saving the destination, with Waze used during the drive when live traffic and incident alerts matter most.
The Bottom Line
The verdict
Choose Google Maps if you want one app for driving, walking, cycling, public transit, business research, reviews, Street View and offline road trips. It is the best overall choice for most people.
Choose Apple Maps if you use an iPhone, Apple Watch and CarPlay heavily, prefer Siri integration and place a high value on Apple’s privacy approach.
Choose Waze if your main concern is getting through changing road conditions. Its community reports, hazard warnings, toll estimates and traffic rerouting make it particularly useful for daily driving.
